Rise of the Silver Surfer -SPOILERS-

Postby Senor Hugo » Fri Jun 15, 2007 12:55 am

First, lets get it out of the way.

For those of you hoping for Galactus to be a huge man in a pin and purple man-dress. Nope, no luck there.

There is no
Image

But instead a swirling mass of gas, rock, and fire, or something of the sort. But, this is not a good reason to not see the film.

But other than that, the movie was awesome as hell. It made up for spider-man 3

Dr. Doom has returned to his comic origins, good ol' armored technological pissed off Doom. Although he kept his electrical powers, which was awesome.

His look in the film is beautiful, the armor is awesome as hell. The only gripes was when it showed a close up of his hands, you could see the foam gloves bend and squish.

The acting was again top notch from all sides, though a bit cornier than the last film.

Jessica Alba, looks terrible as a blonde. That said, her acting improved from the last movie, although the stupid looking "this is my invisible force field gesture" is still there.

The jokes are a lot better, and of course Johnny made em all.

I don't want to give much away, but one line in particular was hilarious. "I just don't want to hear she died in a rock slide."

Doug Jones's acting as the surfer was awesome as hell, and Laurence did a damned good job with the voice.

I don't get many times to say this, but the movie is really worth seeing.

So, the guy from Nip/Tuck, who plays an asshole whos full of himself and believes he's way better than everyone in that show, playing Dr. Doom, who is an asshole who is full of himself and believes he's way better than everyone. Sucks?

You know, I thought he made a perfect Dr.Doom, nailed the character spot-on.

Yeah, here I could have sworn that Nick Nolte in Hulk, was the worst villain, since Aahnold as Freeze.

-shrug- Ah well, can't please everyone.

JUST got back from the midnight showing.

Now, I'm biased because the FF are my favorite superheroes, period. But even I have to admit the first one was pretty hum drum. I went into this with a mixture of dread and hope.

I have to say, I really, really liked it.

To me, this was a proper Fantastic Four movie. About 20 times better than Spider-man 3 for sure. The Silver Surfer, the Fantasticar, Doctor Doom... everything felt so right. It's not nearly as brainless as some critics make it out be. There's genuine warmth between the characters, and there is some growth.

In the FF's world, there's no cloud of death hanging over them ala Spider-man that drives their sense of responsibility. Their scientists who go on fun adventures, enjoying their powers and trying not to kill eachother when their familial bonds get to be too much. Their not being hunted and spurned by a world who hates them ala X-men. There's not a lot of pathos, so maybe that makes them seem shallow. But it's not that simple. There are a lot of inter-relationship issues that stem from being a family. It's this, set against the backdrop of all these crazy adventures, that makes the team what they are.

The first movie felt sort of forced in places, and didn't have nearly the scale an FF movie should. This movie was much better. I'd like to see more exploring, more strange worlds, etc in a future movie, but this was a step in the right direction. It had more of a global feel.

Also, Julian McMahon totally redeemed himself as Doom. He was really cool. If anything, I want to see more adventures of this team now. It was very short. A perfectly paced 90 minutes (which was refreshing after the over-long, sometimes boring Spider-man.)

Oh, and the thing that most people are in a tizzy about? Didn't bother me a bit.

It could be worse.

It could be a Dr. Fate comic.

I don't know, I've contemplated seeing this since I have free movie passes. I'm not sure I want to waste them. I was hoping that they would give Doom a rest. He may be the pinnacle FF villain, but to me he's going to go the way of Magneto in which every movie features him. Common people! There are a ton of FF villains, why the hell do we get saddled with a third-rate Doom again? I don't care how redeeming seems to be, the villain already missed his chance the last movie. He'll forever be relagated to a third-rate villain. I'll give Hugo one thing, he does rank just one step above crappy Absorbing Man from crappy Hulk. The only reason I would probably go see this is Silver Surfer. But Galactis as a giant chunck of rock doesn't impress me. I mean, wtf? We were better off with Ultimate Insect-Galactis.

Does Galactus appear even once in a semi-humanoid state? One of the guys at AICN (the one that gave it a positive review) said he appeared a few times as the giant horned bastard we know and love.

Theres alot a controversy about that review that guy is not a regular contributor and his screen name was ROY STALIN if you move the letters around in annagram fashion you get STORY IN LA. Everyone who has seen the movie will tell you Galactus is never shown in any recognizable form, and only referred to as Galactus Once by the surfer. and what happends at the end is mind boggling. And at least Nick Nolte was ammusing. And when The JSA movie comes out you'll rule those words. :P

I just got back from the late showing and have my two or a few more cents to throw in. I believe this second one was a lot better than the first. The acting is a whole lot better and I can actually enjoy all of the characters rather than having to try and tolerate of few of them as I did in the first one. Julian McMahon is the perfect Dr. Doom; I've never seen Nip/Tuck, but I am a Charmed watcher (not the last season because it is crap and I deny its existance) and his character Cole who is a half-demon who later is infused with evil power that he didn't want is pretty much the same as Dr. Doom for the most part, so I like that.

Galactus' figure was blurrly shown in the dust clouds as the Surfer was flying up to it, but not in a way that non-fans knew what was being depicted.

There are three things that I despised from this film:

1.) Alba wearing blue-eyed contacts. I understand that they are trying to centralize her more to the original "Susan Storm image" and can accept that, but explain why she got blue-eyed contacts. Dying her hair is no big deal because women do that all the time.

2.) Okay, I know I'm being an ultra geek with this one, but Stan Lee's appearance needs to be not of himself. He was a mailman in the first one and now he is himself all of a sudden. And to go even further, :-B these movies exist within a different reality than our own where the Marvel comics do not exist and the characters are real-life people. If the FF exist for real in this reality than wouldn't Stan Lee's fame of creating the "characters" be non-existant? *end nerd rant*

3.) The ending was good, but the "fight" with the Surfer and Galactus should not have taken place. The ending should have been: without Galactus at Earth yet, Johnny takes down Doom, Surfer gets the board, reverses Johnny's cells back and revives Susan. Then they all have a happy moment with Susan reviving and all the electricity starts going out and all that other cr@p that was happening, Surfer looks up and says the "He's here" line and Reed says "We were too late" line and then do the side pan-out view of the cloud coming down on Earth's atmosphere switching to the blurry view of Galactus inside the cloud and do a quick credit start a la "Star Wars"-esque. Perfect ending in my mind for this film to prepare for true fight against Galactus in third one.

All-in-all, I enjoyed this movie and disagree with the critics who stated that it is merely for show and has no plot. It has one of the greatest and most simplistic plots ever devised within superhero realms. Adding in the special effects and action just adds to it even more.

already one in progress, im pissed with what they did to galactus apparently the directors think that movie viewers cant comprehend the concept of a giant sentient being that consumes planets in pink armor. I mean even if they didn't like the armor color they could have changed it, this is like spiderman's director killing off all the villains even though their recurring characters. Galactus is staple to Surfers origin and should remain as such. i mean i can tolerate Doom's origin even though he was never there when the cosmic rays gave the ff their powers, he was plotting in latveria building an empire, but this does it for me. they really need to get better directors for these movies, oh and replace Susan with a better actor.

Giant sentient being that eats planets... Sounds like Unicron (and a few other comic charactors) to me. Those directors must not know Sci-Fi too well.

I admit I haven't seen the movie yet, but I must be one of the very few here who's actually warm to the idea of Galactus NOT having a humanoid form. Y'know, kinda like the id monster in "Forbidden Planet" or the shark in "Jaws" - it's what you don't see that gives you the willies, and also leaves more to the imagination.

And to be perfectly honest...a flying car? Cool. A silver man who surfs through space and talks like Morpheus? Definitely cool. A giant who wears pink and purple armor? Um...not cool, IMO.

Not a fan of Gas-lactus. He should have been some form of humanoid. It was revealed in the comics that he appears to every different sentient species differently (To the Skrull he's a giant armoured Skrull..and no the armour isn't the same.) so they could have given a nod to the traditional one by showing it in a series of scene in an origin flashback as a form some random eaten race and made him look totally different in this one.

Doom...improved yet I still don;t embrace him as Doom. Total admission of bias since Doom is one of my faves but he doesn't have his regal air. I loved his new look, loved the armour and loved the takeover of the board and the fight but something doesn't give off the right vibe to me.

But the movie was friggin' sweet, heads above #1. Surfer was dead on.

BTW i saw the scene as the credits started to roll of the Surfer survivng and getting back on hsi board..did they have any other scenes after that? I had to leave after that.

Nope, that was it. IMO, they really missed an fanboy opportunity there as well. They could've have Surfer utter his "To me, my board" line right there.

You know, thinking back on it.

I really preferred Doug Jones's voice to Laurence Fishburne's for the surfer. Compared to the trailers where the Surfer says "Everything you know is at an end" just didn't seem right hearing Morpheus.
