Scale of city bots and combiner bots?

Postby Fragmare » Thu Jul 16, 2015 5:46 pm

I've been thinking a lot lately about the scale inconsistency within the TF universe, and started tinkering around with the scale of found TF images to try to make some kind of logical sense out of it. Here's the about the best I could come up with.

Image

Clearly, Primus and Unicron would be orders of magnitude larger than anyone pictured here, so they're not shown.

I've always considered guys like Metroplex, Fort Max, Trypticon and Skorponok to be roughly the same size... with Fortress Maximus and Metroplex being the tallest, as they stand up straight like a humanoid.

After that, things get a little confusing. Let's assume, for a moment, there is no mass change when transforming. Omega Supreme would need to be large enough to fit several autobots inside his alt form with ease, but small enough that combiners such as Devastator would still pose a threat to him. But one must also consider that each constituent arm/leg/torso of a combiner must fall into the "normal-ish" size range for cybertronians.

Thoughts, comments or suggestions? Should one or more of these bots be drastically larger or smaller?

On second thought, maybe the scale goes something more like this:

Image

Metroplex is nearly 700 ft and Optimus is around 35 ft. (2 pixels = 1 foot.)

Trypticon's height was based on the fact he's nearly as tall as Metroplex, but slightly hunched over.

Fort Max and Skorponok's size were based on the fact that each of the their heads needs to transform into a normal to large sized robot.

Omega Supreme's size was based on the fact he needs to be roughly head and shoulders taller than Devastator and also the fact that Omega needs to be large enough that other large autobots can easily fit inside when in alt mode.

Devastator's size was based on the assumption that all 6 vehicles that make up the Constructicons are giant mining-type earth moving equipment.

Sky Lynx's size was based on the size of an actual NASA space shuttle

Bruticus, Superion, Defensor and Menasor's sizes were all based upon the sizes of the vehicles they're made up of.

Predaking was a guess. Some comic said 80 ft tall, but that seems a little small if he's meant to take on Sky Lynx. I went with 100 ft because it looks about right. Anyone else have input on this one?

Grimlock is slightly taller than Optimus, so I put him at roughtly 45 ft in height.

There's a size reference image somewhere from a Japan magazine concerning the "Headmasters" anime. And you have to take into account from what "universe" you are basing the measurement. Marvel comic, IDW, DW, Toei, Sunbow version.

Anime pre Titan Metroplex

The Headmasters

Fortmax big kahuna, roughly the same height as Megazarak, starship sized. As big as the Macross(?) which was about 1 mile long in "starship mode"

Metroplex, in robot form barely reached Fortress' knees, same size as Dinozer

Masterforce

Grandmax (smaller than Fortress). Same with Black Zarak. He shrunk. The size? Given as Godginrai is roughly the size of gestalt, so more or less bigger by a head or two.

Metroflex Titan

Back story of Metrowars of Yuki Oshima, Metroflex got an upgrade after battling Metrotitan. The same size before the battle, but after the battle with Nebulan aid, he was 2 to 3 times bigger now ( same size as Fortress, well in the toy as Metrowars didn't show them standing together in comparison thus a bit of an inference of mine ). Also, Metrotitan in the artwork was around the size of the new Metroflex's forearm of something.

I believe Combiners are skyscraper sized while City bots are state sized in robot mode

Combiners, simply put, should be the sum size of the robots that form them.

Cityformers on the other hand should be so unspeakably huge that no "normal" Transformer would even show up next to one.

Oh man, please don't go nuts. This is a task that sounds like it leads to Bat Country. You shouldn't stop there.

So that said, your second attempt looks pretty cool, although I like the idea of Fortress Maximus being an unreasonably big Transtector. My favorite take on scale for these G1 bots is this old-ish piece of art:
