Transformers characters are largely identifiable by their colour schemes so black-and-white printing was needlessly difficult to follow. E.g. how the heck would you tell the Seekers apart?
Sure, Galvatron is identifiable by other means, his unique head, etc. But I'd still argue that such an iconic purple character should retain his colours... After all, Optimus is always red, white and blue.

I believe this is more meant to be an homage to his original G1 toy. Color scheme and design are near exactly the same as this flashback design. >:oP
