At the risk of looking wishy-washy I think it's somewhere in the middle. I think it's more than a coincidence but I don't think the writers specifically watched G1 episodes and tried to replicate them. Could it be subconscious memories of them watching the cartoons as kids, or picking something up from looking through Transformers websites for background? Could it be that there are only so many stories you can tell if you insist on using the same characters in the same situation for 25 years?

Oh, I think that Cybertron being transported to Earth is right out of the Ultimate Doom. The exact same thing happened there. Some of the other elements of the story might be either coincidence or just a thinly veiled attempt at making Bayverse more G1-esque (which I overwhelmingly approve of, it's a definite improvement) and some are brand new, especially when it comes to the humans.

Quite a few sources are saying they've seen advanced screenings and Prime now kills Megatron at the end by cutting his face with his axe and ripping out his spine immediately after Megatron helps him up.

My soul died just a bit. I really hope this isn't true.

I smell some BSing.

That's just something that Prime wouldn't do, he's a good guy.

When has movie Prime ever acted wholesome?

Normally I'd be skeptical, but there's more than one person describing the scene. It seems like such a waste of a good ending!

He's only killed in self defense so far in the movies.

Is it Optimus Prime or Sentinel Prime? Sentinel, I can definitely see do that. Optimus, probably not, unless it's in absolute self defense. I hope it doesn't happen. I actually had high hopes they would do Megatron right this time. At least they got his design right...

Im sure you guys already know by now but Prime doesn infact tear Megatron apart with Megatron almost defenceless. I 'spose he is justified, (pay-back even for ROTF?) but it just felt so un-Prime to kill Megs like that.

It's almost as if Bay looked at Wolverine in the X-men movies and decided Optimus was going to be the Autobot's bad-ass anti-hero. It's like you can't have a decent and moral hero anymore.

THIS. As long as you totally disregard everything you know about Optimus Prime prior to the ROTF (even in the 2007 movie, he's a pretty peaceful guy; only violent when he has to be and is remorseful afterwards), the Prime in ROTF and DOTM is totally fine. He's just some badass, ruthless warrior who tear apart anyone who threatens his adopted home...and occasionally preaches about freedom and genocide against enemies in the same sentence.

I'm a little surprised Bay didn't have him put on a leather trenchcoat at some point and bang Arcee.

What's harsh about that?

Don't know. Sorry, a bit tired right now, guess I read some criticism...
Never mind.

In my opinion the movie ending is better and makes sense... Megatron tells Optimus that he wanted to remain leader and live another day, and Prime is sick of the Decepticons so he kills him, in the book.... Like Megatron says... in order to rebuild Cybertron.... EARTH WOULD HAVE TO DIE,PRIME ACCEPTING MEGATRON AS A GOOD GUY IS A MASSIVE PLOTHOLE.... AND PRIME WANTS T0 DEFEND EARTH, SO HE SHOULD'VE KILLED HIM, LIKE IN THE MOVIE
