Yeah, the head looks wonky. I definitely feel like the interior of the "horns" should be level with or higher than the top of the face. That said there've been a few bits lately like Hot Rod's chest and Ironhide's proportions that look weird in photos but perfectly good in hand.

The lack of the silver spoiler is a bit of a pisser. I wonder if it's due to an edict by Lamborghini, or the spoiler becoming a yellow part of the robot mode or something.

Other than that I totally love this. The robot mode proportions are fantastic, the car mode (both of them) is obviously great, the accessories are all awesome ideas (LOVE the alien mask) and even the teeny gun is justified by the Robocop thigh holster thing. I wonder if it'll be possible to give him missile fists like the toy.

All in all, I'm totally all about this and just wonder why it took so long to come around. Can't wait to have my Lambo Bros. together.

I would be very curious to know if people will actually claim this toy to be better than MP Wheeljack.

No. If anyone ever does, I call serious shenanigans on their judgement.

This looks to be a fine figure, but we haven't even seen enough to tell if it's better than Sunsurge.

Wheel jack was far better than Sunsurge, so that is a case closed right there.

Now, I've been fiddling with Sunsurge while I look at these pics tonight, and I honestly can't make a definite call on who is better yet. Probably won't until I have 39 In hand. Even if I do end up liking 39 better, I'll still keep Sunsurge. He has a special place in my collection heart.

I don't mean this question facetiously but what exactly are they supposed to be styling these figures after if not the cartoons? The retro-awesome but weirdly-proportioned G1-toys? The inconsistently modeled and coloured comics? The nice-looking but johnny-come-lately (and not super well known in Japan) IDW works?

They should just model them similarly to mp 10 through the datsuns and wheeljack - updates, intricate, visually interesting.

This thing sucks and it looks ugly (at least inferno was visually interesting in it's profile and the way it handled the ladder), way, way too much canary yellow, I'm sure if there were details (molded or otherwise) it would've all been washed out by it

I've never wanted cartoon accurate Masterpiece figures. Something that is a nice hybrid between the G1 toys and the G1 cartoon would be great. G1 toy detailing would be awesome with taking appropriate cues when a certain style dominates. I do not want the simplicity of the cartoon look, which I complained about with Inferno, but was pleasantly surprised at more of the mold detailing of Grapple. Wheeljack and Prowl are the best two Masterpiece figures, in my opinion, so far. I like Ultra Magnus, but he took too many cues from the cartoon and not enough detailing that you'd see in the G1 toy.

Sunstreaker's head is way too cartoonish. It needs the uniquely shaped "ears" that just about every other toy version has had, including the Robot Heroes figure. There have been some minor differences with it over the years, but the obscure overly cartoonish G1-cartoon version look just isn't for me with its simplicity, especially since some episodes had the more elongated "ears" ... either way, it needs the "vents" or lines in the ears like all of the other versions have.

Bingo. Maybe he'll come with an alternate "toy" head to make guys like me happy, like they did with Inferno and Grapple. That would be fantastic. I love the Alien mask, but not if it means that he doesn't come with an alternate toy head.

I think he just wants something that works in a 3d environment rather than taking directly from a 2d cartoon show.

Here are some prevous sunstreaker heads. I personally think the Classics one and CW one are both closer to what I would want as a hybrid of styles working in a 3D environment:

Exactly! Especially since the G1 cartoon featured simplified versions of the characters to make it easier to animate them. I hold the toys to a much higher standard!

I guess we'd have to disagree then; Takara are definitely going for a clear and specific visual style of "stepped off the screen" with just enough subtle detailing to avoid the stack-o-boxes look, and while I can understand that that's not everyone's cup of tea I definitely prefer that to something that's a dilution of different styles.

I get what you're saying; I do like the look of the ear vents, but not including them is hardly the obscure or wrong option; it's how he looked in the cartoon, in the 1986 movie, in the comics when they were on model, in pretty much every piece of media made in the 80s that didn't rip off his box art. The only places he had vent lines was on his toys, and in post-2000's comics. I'd like having the vents as an alternate head but if you're drawing a line in the sand with one noggin, it needs to be the one where the nostalgia is at.

yaaassss :D Finally Sunstreaker graces the Masterpiece line to go along with his Brother Sideswipe! I love that We get Chip too he'll go great with Spike but I find myself needing Sparkplug and Carly now. It's nice to see that Takara's going back to the 84 Autobot cars for masterpieces and hopefully soon we'll get an official Hound, Trailbreaker and Jazz to finish the 84 guys. I hope the mask will be compatible with Tracks though!

I'm not sure you do get what I'm saying. For the most part, until now, the Masterpiece line has been this hybrid line that meshed the G1 cartoon look with the G1 toys and some updates along the way. Only recently has the line taken a turn to go more after the cartoon look. I'm just voicing my opinion that I'm not a fan of the overly cartoon look, which has been cropping up more and more since Ultra Magnus. Not a fan. I want the cartoon look but with the detail of the toys.

I doubt they'll ever get it, we go through this almost every time a new mp comes out, they look terrible, like they're soft, or melting, like they're blurred due to a bad camera lens, only they aren't, they're just bland and boring, and hard on the eye's.

Man it seems even the fan art that pops up on Google Images for a Sunstreaker search seems to confirm that many fans seem to agree that the ears should have the lines, if not a more traditional toy shape (Classics Sunstreaker has the penultimate Sunstreaker hand so far).

I've gotta agree. An alternate head with some less rounded "ears" that also includes the vent lines in the yellow would make Masterpiece Sunstreaker really "pop" that much more for me. I hope that's something Takara can do at this stage if they aren't already planning for it. Maybe they could also include some decals to add a few toy details like the red shoulders for people who want that. They have done as much for a few other recent Masterpiece releases. For instance, Inferno came with optional "F.D." stickers to put on his cabin doors, which are toy accurate, but not found on the cartoon model. Otherwise, there isn't a lot I would change with this Sunstreaker (aside from chroming the spoiler).

I actually really like the cw version, foremost for the head (actually all the figures in wave 4 had crisp, gorgeous headsculpts, come to think about it), it's literally his most iconic feature, and the MP was the chance to show this feature off in it's ultimate glory, but, no, it just gets regurgitated like an after thought, there's nothing noteworthy or memorable about the figure >:oP

They've included details from the toys when it's supplemented the cartoon detail but not when it's contradicted it. MP Prowl has some additional detail over the cartoon, but his eyes are blue, not silver. Alert's head is red. Wheeljack actually has eyes. Smokescreen gets the cartoon head and missile launchers, even when it meant everything being retooled. Ironhide has a head.

Toy Sunstreaker has angled head vents. Cartoon Sunstreaker has curved, plain yellow horns. Changing the horns to vents wouldn't be expanding on the cartoon design, it would be replacing it, which would go against what the MP line has done throughout.

There is a definite increasing trend towards large undetailed areas on the surface of the figures like Inferno's legs, and I can understand and empathize if that's not your bag, but that's where the evolution of the MP line is at. And I can totally agree with that evolution because if your plan is making the figures look like they stepped out of the cartoon as the top priority then it might not be everyone's taste but it's a concrete plan. If you go off that track and change the plan to make the figures look like the best possible interpretation they can be then you've opened the worm can because Johnny does like the cartoon look, and Timmy likes the wide buffalo horns look of the G1 toy and Peter likes the narrower, extra-pointy Milne horns and Tanaka digs the spiky Binaltech horns and Shoji likes his F-15 jets to have perfectly clean undercarriages which is why MP-03 keeps his tailfins on hip scabbards.

Designing MP figures is an increasingly risky proposition for Takara both as they move away from (relative) A-listers like Optimus, Starscream and Soundwave and as the market gets undercut by unofficial releases. And auteur-designed figures can't fit into that model. MP-03 is the easy example of where auteur design ended up screwing the pooch, but you can see the same issue every day in the world of third-party, where particularly "individual" designs can wind up in the bargain bin. The one place Takara can't be challenged in is making figures that are EXACT interpretations of the characters that only they (and Hasbro) own the designs to, and any time they deviate from the design strategy they risk auteurism and give up some of their safe ground.

And now as usual I've both thought and argued way too hard on a teeny tiny issue that wouldn't rustle the jimmies of anyone besides me, but if I can't waste an evening discussing the decision to make a figure of a popular cartoon character look as much as possible like he does in the cartoon then what's freedom of speech for?
