TF Prime: Proving Grounds Discussion Thread

Postby Stormtalon » Wed Dec 03, 2014 12:23 pm

Hello out there, Stormtalon here.

As you may have seen already, I've begun posting the second story in the Dragons vs. Dino series. And things are off to a promising start. I wanted to open this discussion thread so if people have questions, comments and (hopefully) well wishes and encouragement, they can put them here. Even if you want to vent, I think I've grown a thick enough skin to take it.

My plan is to release a part every 2 weeks. Roughly, planning 10 parts and then consolidating them into one complete story at the end. I'll also see about pictures, so look for them in the future.

Please continue to enjoy these stories. They are a blast to write.

Hello again. Part 2 is done, I'm currently editing and proofreading. Today, I thought I'd put profiles of the characters in the story.

Today we will meet the Winds: Headwind, Tailwind, and Crosswind.

The ‘Winds’ are a squad of Decepticon fighter jets led by Headwind. Like Starscream and his squad mates Thundercracker and Skywarp, the Winds share the same aircraft model; a forward-swept fighter with nose cone canards. They were sent to secure a tactical sector before Cybertron went dark. When word spread of Cybertron's restoration, they made their way back home.

Name: Headwind
Position: Squad Leader

Headwind is clearly the leader of this squad. He leads through quiet competence. He takes the mission, he completes the mission and that’s it. The bragging he leaves to his buddies Tail and Cross. His color scheme of white, black and gray make him hard to see in the clouds but an easy to spot target on a clear day.

Name: Tailwind
Position: Rear Guard

Tailwind isn’t a coward. He sees his survival as his highest priority. He worked his way up from Vehicon foot soldier and learned quickly that loyalty counts for little and it is just as likely to die by a commander venting bad news as it was facing Autobots on the battlefield. He always brings up the rear preferring Head and Cross to charge in. His blue and black color scheme blends in to most background, but his red eye visor can give him away. Once the fighting is done and safety is assured, he’s ready to match his mate Crosswind with stories of his valor.

Name: Crosswind
Position: Wing

Crosswind is erratic and potentially dangerous. Like a grenade with a pin pulled, he will explode, but you don’t know when. Once, Terradive tried to replace him on the team. He scanned the same vehicle and chose a matching orange, black and white color scheme. Crosswind calmly and deliberately attacked their commander, Slipstream. She reassigned Crosswind to a remote outpost. A punishment he made sure Terradive took the full brunt. That was the last anyone heard of him. In his less volatile moods, he enjoys ripping Tailwind for his cowardice and making snarky comments in general.

Hello again,
I have to announce that part 3 of Proving Grounds has been delayed. Like a souffle that keeps fallen, the ingredients are there they just aren't coming together.

In its stead I'd like to post some background information on the two new Transformers introduced at the end of Part 2: the Dinocons.

Overkill
As his name implies, Overkill loves to fight. It doesn't matter in which mode. As a Ceratosaurus, he mangles with tooth and claw. As a robot, he crunches metal with his war hammer. Shockwave designed him with Grimlock in mind.

I see him as a recolored Age of Extinction Grimlock painted in the blue-green and off-white color scheme of his G1 fore bearer. I imagined he'd be voiced by James Belushi.

Slugfest
Slugfest fights dirty. He often charges the smallest or injured bots first. This former Forged interrogator has a low threshold for pain but a high threshold for inflicting it. When threatened he'll transform into a Kentosaurus to fend off attacks. His mace club is his preferred weapon to his laser rifle. Shockwave meant for him to be an upgraded version of Snarl.

The Age of Extinction Snarl set me on this Dinocon path. The green stegosaurus looked nothing like Snarl, but a lot like G1 Slugfest. The knight aesthetic that all the movie Dinobots carried looked like Decepticon features to me so I started seeing them as Dinocons instead of Dinobots. Slugfest is AoE Snarl. Only thing I might change is to give his plates a silvery finish. I'd pick Bill Fabrebakke to voice Slugfest.

I hope this will tide many readers over until Part 3 is ready for posting. Feel free to add your own questions and comments.

Thanks

Welcome back.
It has been quite a while. The next installment of the story is still in the hopper but to reward the patient readers hanging in here I am offering a sneak preview of the other Dinocons who will be joining the story soon.

The Dinocons as a idea really gained form after I saw the toys from Age of Extinction. I didn't hate them, but their martial appearance especially helmets, greaves and shoulder spikes looked more Decepticon than Autobot. And my imagination took off from there. So onto the profiles.

Gorepoint
'You don't need a hea to be a fighter, just a good strong body.' This perfectly fits Gorepoint. The conversion into a Styracosaurus diminished Gorepoint's cranial capacity. He enjoys the simple things like pointing him in the right direction and charging until he stops.

Gorepoint is a recolor of AoE Slug: a solid dark green body, off-white frill and silver horns. I hear Richard Newman (the voice of Rhinox) as his voice.

Terrorsoar
On the ground, Terrorsoar is clumsy and slow, but in the sky he is swift and deadly. The pteranodon is modeled after a Quetzalcoatalus, the largest pterosaur to date. Terrorsoar is vicious and merciless. Oftern the first to laugh at others misfortune.

This is a redeco of Transformers Animated Swoop. Off-white accent a green body and silvery wings and highlights. I hear Matt Frewer's voice in the role of Terrorsoar.

Hello out there, Stormtalon here.

You are probably wondering where the next part of Proving Ground is. Honestly, I'm wondering the same thing. Here are the facts, the next part is outlined, but I've hit a block on it. So I'm stepping away from it for a couple of weeks to come back at it fresh. I'll put up some profiles in the next couple of days as a down payment for your patience and understanding.

If anyone has questions or comments, this thread is open for you at add them here. I'll be as receptive as I can be.

Thanks one and all. Rock on!

Welcome back. I promised in my previous post some character profiles while I continue working on Part 4 of Proving Grounds. So far we've meet the Dinocons and the Mighty Winds, now we take a look at the Terrorcons.

What are the Terrorcons?

The Terrorcons are Tarantulas’ recreation of Shockwave’s work. Where Shockwave spliced Autobots with alien DNA to create the Dinobots, Tarantulas spliced Decepticons with Predacon CNA to create the Terrorcons. Tarantulas hoped by providing a secret army to Megatron he’d replace Shockwave as Science commander. Unfortunately, when Cybertron went dark survival trumped a promotion. The five prototypes were placed in stasis pods and stored in the lab’s cover town of Helix.

A group of Autobots and Dinobots uncovered the pods and accidentally opened one. Tarantulas recovered the other four. With victorious Autobots in control of Cybertron and the Decepticons in disarray, Tarantulas figures his ready-made combat group could come in handy.

Hun-grr

Hun-grr is the powerhouse of the group. A brawny robot capable of charging head first and mowing down anything in his path. He is simple and direct.

His beast mode is based on a Predacon known only as a scraplet eater. His two heads can quickly scarf down a swarm of the ravenous pests. Unfortunately, he can’t turn the hunger off. He constantly gnaws on everything. Tarantulas original podded him to keep his lab in one piece.

He has a deep red body and off-white for his head, neck and limbs.

Ripper/Snapper
Not every Cybertronian survives the Predacon conversion. They are the lucky ones. Pre-conversion, Rippersnapper was a loyal vehicon drone with no name or rank. He was to the first of a new wave of Predacon shock troops, but there were complications namely a psychic break.

In robot mode, you deal with Ripper, a killer who can barely keep his bloodier impulses in check. If he goes too long without a kill, he turns on his comrades.

His beast mode, Snapper, is a species identified as a Cindersaur. Originally thought to be a mid-level scavenger, cindersaurs possess a lethal intellect, especially on the hunt. After one too many candidates turned up dead, Tarantulas podded Rippersnapper before he experienced one of this ‘accidents’.

Rippersnapper is a gray and blue bipedal Cindersaur.

Blight
Blight can never sneak up on someone. His stench always gives him away. A combination of exhaust, burned rubber and oil that stings the optics and sears the olfactory sensors.

The Predacon he is based on has never identified. Tarantulas resorted to calling him a slag beast. This purple bipedal creature has great upper arm strength and deep reserves of stamina. But there is little beyond that. His offensive odor keeps most at bay.

Blight is a blue and purple slag beast of unknown specification.

Twinstrike
Twinstrike is another species of scraplet eater. But where Hun-grr feeds for power, Twinstrike feeds for speed. His sleek, low slung yellow body is made for sprint chases and pouncing.

In robot and beast mode, Twinstrike likes to whisper. He often walks slower, but without sound. He unnerves his other teammates with his stalking. He often carries a gleam in his eye like he’s figuring you how to quickly take you down.

Twinstrike is a yellow and green scraplet eater, but smaller than Hun-grr.

Windrazor
Windrazor was meant to be ‘death borne by wings’; an avian assassin who strikes then fades into the firmament. Thanks to the Autobots interference, Windrazor more suited to a mall than a battlefield. Windrazor has the mentality of a teenage girl. She wants to prove herself and earn respect. She also yearns for more freedom, but at the same time fearful of the wider world. Some of the fear stems from her beast mode. As an avian, she blacks out and wakes up with no idea where she is or how she got there. She is afraid someone is controlling her.

Windrazor is a yellow avian with bronze wings.

Hello out there. Stormtalon here.

I've been very neglectful. No excuses, just updating. I have the first section of Part 4. I hope to have the rest out before our big move at the end of July. No promises, but I'm moving at flank speed. Enjoy the story so far.

Hello out there, Stormtalon here.

A quick message before I go dark for at least a couple of weeks maybe longer. I'll be moving next week and internet access will be spotty at best. I'll try and get back to Proving Grounds as soon as I am able. Please keep reading, not just my stuff but everyone on the forum. Writers need all the encouragement they can get.

See ya on the other side,
