Galaxy Four, the mostly-missing serial starring William Hartnell as the First Doctor, has been given the animation treatment.

It will be released on 15th November 2021 on DVD, Blu-ray and as an exclusive Steelbook this year, filling another gap in missing Doctor Who episodes.

Doctor Who: Galaxy Four will be available on DVD, Blu-Ray and as a Limited Edition Steelbook from Amazon, HMV, Zavvi and Rarewaves in the UK, from Amazon in the US and from JB and Sanity in Australia.

Doctor Who: Russell T Davies returns as programme showrunner

Screenwriter Russell T Davies is to take charge again of Doctor Who, the sci-fi show he helped revive in 2005.

Davies, who was the fantasy drama's showrunner until 2009, will take over when Chris Chibnall departs next year.

"I'm beyond excited to be back on my favourite show," said Davies, who resumes his role as the show prepares to mark its 60th anniversary in 2023.

One of his first responsibilities will be to decide who takes over the Tardis following Jodie Whittaker's exit.

The actress is set to hang up her Sonic Screwdriver after one more six-part series and three 2022 specials.

In a statement, however, Davies said it would be "time-travelling too fast" to speculate on what will happen when he returns.

"There's a whole series of Jodie Whittaker's brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm," he continued. "I'm still a viewer for now."

Chibnall said it was "monumentally exciting and fitting" that Davies would be back in charge for the series' 60th birthday.

"Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him," the writer and producer continued.

Davies revived Doctor Who in its current incarnation with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and remained for David Tennant's time as the Doctor.

Steven Moffatt took over when Matt Smith took on the role, staying to supervise Peter Capaldi's stint as TV's indefatigable Time Lord.

The success of Doctor Who's relaunch led Davies to create two spin-off shows, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

After leaving the show in 2009 he enjoyed more acclaim with TV dramas Years and Years, A Very English Scandal and It's A Sin.

Piers Wenger, the BBC's director of drama, said the news of Davies' return would "delight Doctor Who fans across the globe".

"We are thrilled that Russell is returning to Doctor Who to build on the huge achievements of Chris and Jodie," he continued. "Russell, it's wonderful to have you back."

Davies' return was also welcomed by Bad Wolf, the production company founded in 2015 by former BBC executives Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter.

Gardner and Tranter both worked with Davies on the Doctor Who relaunch and will collaborate with him again when he returns as showrunner.

"We are delighted to be joining Russell T Davies on a looped ontological paradox," said the Bad Wolf Twitter account. "Where Russell goes, we are proud to follow.

"With BBC Studios, Bad Wolf will be producing the all-new series of Doctor Who. It is a privilege to be asked to support him in Doctor Who's future."

While I thought the writing of Davies' era had its issues, they were mostly problems due to the overall trends of that era of TV. Honestly, I'm looking forward to seeing what Davies could do with the show today, especially if this draws renewed interest and an increased budget from the BBC.

I doubt any of us will shed a tear for Chibnall. I'd say RTD is a least a reassuring option, in comparison to some of the other names in the running.

Last I read, Rhys Ifans was the latest name for the Doctor role. Who is a more interesting choice, than a lot of the competition.

Oh, he'd be an interesting choice. I like my Doctors on the older side.

Personally, I'd like to see Marina Sirtis as the Doctor.

People are now looking towards RTD other shows, saying he likes to cast from People he's worked with in the past (like how we got Eccleston and Tennant). Interestingly this opens up the likes of Stephen Fry and Neil Patrick Harris

Meanwhile, what I originally intended to post yesterday:

With Galaxy 4 looming and Evil of the Daleks to be released on Monday. I thought this was a good time to have a refresher on the current state of Classic [B/W] Who.

Out of that list, there's two that I really want them to animate now, and thats the Dalek's Master Plan and The Wheel in Space (the last cyberman adventure I need for my old who Collection). I know they have all the audio to the Dalek's Master Plan so maybe that one could happen in the future :-?

Oh and the Celestial Toymaker!

The Wheel in Space is definitely needed. No question they won't do it, either. Cybermen stories sell. They also suit the animated black and white look very well.

Dalek's Master Plan is almost mythical at this point. No doubt it would be the most expensive to produce. Which is why the general consensus is that it would potentially be the last of the animated line. Feast of Steven is forever lost (audio and visual) and no one really cares. So they could either release DMP as an 11 part story or include Mission to the Unknown as the 12th part.

I really want to see them do the death sequence of Sara Kingdom justice.

I can agree with that (that DMP would be the finale to the animated Who restorations) was it Mission to the Unknown that was the lead in to DMP :-? Feel an urge to watch some old Who, but what to put on...

Ok, so episode 1 (of 6). What did we think? The first positive I immediately had was due to a return the serial format. I can't believe it took thirteen seasons of Nu Who before we did :???:

While I like the idea of a serialized story, this first episode was just typical Chibnall scatterbrained bullshit. Kept throwing new thing after new thing into the mix. By the end when they went through the various characters' reaction shots I has already forgotten a third of them.

I liked Dan (already preferred him to Yaz, in fact)
Although the premise behind his people was interesting, I didn't like Karvanista. The design made me wince when I first saw it. The Weeping Angel bit was cool. Because it boiled them down to what made them so memorable in the first place. Wherein every story after Blink diminished their mystique.

But even stating the things I like, I am talking about disjointed elements. As a whole, it wasn't as cohesive as serials of Classic Who. Which made me think, regardless of writer, if Nu Who were more used to the serial format, it might not have felt like a couple of episodes in a blender.

I don't think it has anything to do with nuWho's previous experience with serialization (or lack thereof), it's just how Chibnall operates as a writer. "A couple episodes in a blender" can be used to describe MOST of his episodes, like "42," "Power of Three," "Battle of Ranskor Whatever," "Resolution/Spyfall," "Can You Hear Me?" "Timeless Children," and especially "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship." His episodes are more like Simpsons episodes, often morphing into an entirely different plot by the end than what the stories started out with.

Can You Hear Me should definitely been more than one episode. Sigh

I was apprehensive when "Written by Chris Chibnall" flashed up at the beginning of this story. But, if he is the writer on all parts of Flux, it might iron out?

...Maybe?

After watching the second episode, I want a Dan and Karvinista spin-off where they trip around the universe (as Division agents which they both already are ...) with Dan getting into all sorts of trouble, having to be rescued by Karvinista who comes up with new insults each and every time for him.

While overall I liked this newest episode of DW, I have two big nitpicks. One, you'd think a militant race like the Sontarans would rotate feeding times in shifts so they wouldn't be so blaringly vulnerable. Two, you'd also think they wouldn't keep access to such a vital system like their food in such an easy-to reach location like just below the panel on a landing strut.

I definitely think they should keep them as a double act. They really work well off each other.

To that I'd say that probably comes down to their arrogance. Note to the time period, they seemed to "come out of nowhere". So they were "safe" behind camouflage technology far in advance of their opponents. They assumed they had nothing to fear. If not for the Doctor, they wouldn't have been discovered.
