Hey all!

So I've been on the fence with Gundam for ages, and I took the plunge recently and bought my first one, as seen below: Barbatos Lupos

Image

Having put this guy together and fallen in love with the kit and the aesthetic, I want to learn more about Gundam, such as the TV shows, the robots and pilots themselves, and some of the kits you guys find to be the coolest. I'm brand new to it, but I want to learn.

So please, any Gundam knowledge you have, share away!

I'm a long term gundam fan, so I'll be happy to help in any way I can :-) I've also done a fair few of the models with the last being a 1/144 kit of gundam "alex" (RX-78NT) from the original video animation series Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, which I heartily recommend as it's a fantastic series.

So yeah...ask away D-max!

Alright! let's start simple: how did Gundam start? are there good and bad gundams? who do they fight? What are some of the big names?

The first mobile suit gundam started in April 1979 and is the brain child of one yoshiyuki "kill'em all" Tomino. It ran for 43 episodes...and then was cancelled. Luckily fans had begun to support the series through model kits...flash forward to March 1981 and the first of three films aired (which recut the series into movie length, and common Japanese practice, with new animation mixed in) these helped ensure that gundam's popularity rose and in March 1985 that popularity was rewarded with the anime sequel, mobile suit gundam z (z is for Zeta Gundam). This one ran for a full 50 episodes and thus the gundam juggernaut really picked up steam. I'll continue the history lesson on the gundam anime so I can address the next point :-)

There is bad gundams across the gundam multiverse, like G Gundam's Master Gundam, 00 Gundam's Reborn Gundam, Gundam Seed's Providence Gundam though the antagonist sometimes just gets a kickass non-gundam mobile suit like the Sazabi in the Char's Counterattack movie. As for who they fight, this is a lot more complicated then you would think as there is several different timelines that gundams take place in.

Universal Century Timeline: This is the main branch of the franchise, transformers has G1, gundam has U.C. this one started in the original series and there is about 4 series that take place in this timeline (and a live action movie which we will not name...), about two original anime movies, 4 original video animations projects (which have been recut into movies, and in the case of Gundam Unicorn, a series). This timeline starts off with the one year war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon (space colonies that have declared themselves independent of earth) at the beginning of the first series, the feds are losing, thanks to zeon's new weapon, the mobile suit (the iconic Zaku II debuts here), but the feds have a ace up their sleeve in the form of their own newly developed mobile suit (the gundam and a couple of lesser machines, the guntank and guncannon). End of the first series and feds win the war...thanks to gundam and it's teenage pilot Amuro Ray. Go forward a few years and the earth federation has become corrupt and because of terrorist incidents has allowed a new elite force to rise to keep the spacenoids in line, the Titans. These are the villains for the next series, Gundam Z. The heroes for this new show are the Anti-Earth United Government (or A.E.U.G for short) and it follows them as they try to stop the abusive and fascist Titans from oppressing the spacenoids and keep them from taking over the earth federation to boot. Towards the end of the series though a new faction enters, the Neo Zeon, so we get quite a triple threat finale. Oh, and a hint, don't get attached to the characters in this show, you'll only end up getting hurt :-(

For Gundam ZZ we stick with what's left of the A.U.E.G as they face the big threat of Neo Zeon who want to conquer everything. As you can see already each gundam series varies the sides that are fighting.

The series your kit is from is the latest one Iron Blooded Orphans and ran for two seasons and follows a start up mercenary group, again it's got a big bodycount. IBO takes place in a alternate timeline (though I can't remember what the name of the timeline is)

That's all I've got time for at the moment, so I'll continue this later if you want of course.

I've been a Gundam fan for about 15 years now since Wing started airing on tv in my country. I've seen about 1/3 - 1/2 of the shows and i've had a boatload of model kits.

My favorite series are Wing, G and 00

G Gundam is fantastic as long as you know what you're getting into, some fantastic designs and touching moments abound. Wing was my first gundam as well :D though here in the UK it was the only gundam we got off cartoon network.

I'm also fond of SEED and Destiny, though more because of the mecha and visual spectacle than the story and characters.

G is an oddball series, but it has a very strong story.

Gundam is an ongoing series with different shows, manga, movies to go with the anime, toys and model kits, etc. It was what started the giant robot trend in Japan which eventually spread to America with shows like Voltron and Transformers. Each show is different, but of course the main focus is still there in all of them, the giant robot fights. The Gundams are special mobile suits made of a rare alloy called Gundanium. The Gundams are always or usually, piloted by the heroes. My favorite two Gundam shows are Wing and 00. My favorire pilot is Duo Maxwell, the pilot of Death Scythe in Gundam Wing. Duo is a daring fighter with a Brooklyn accent, is cool and mostly laid back in attitude, but he kicks serious ass and makes sure he gets the job done, just like the other pilots. He's saved the main character on a number of occasions, due to Heero's basically emo way of doing things (what is it with edgy guys anywats?). Death Scythe is cool. His main weapon is a huge laser bladed scythe.

I like the designs (some of them at least) from seed/destiny but everything else can take a long jump. I'm happy that the seed movie never materialised, couldn't take any more of Kira "Jesus" Yamato. Luckily the seed timeline is saved by its side stories like Astray, give me a full anime series of that any day.

Chibi@ actually gundam started the real robot trend, a sub genre within the mecha genre itself. Till gundam all giant robots were either their own being or something capable of amazing feats (for example, Go Nagai's Mazinger Z, or GoLion ;-)) It was thanks to Gundam that we got series down the line like Macross (and in turn, Robotech) and one of my other favourites, Full Metal Panic! Also Deathscythe is an awesome machine :D Though Wing Zero will always be my favourite from Wing due to sentimental reasons.

As far as Wing goes, it's a toss-up between Deathscythe and Heavyarms for me.

Which version of heavyarms though? ;-) Heavyarms Custom is a very nice machine, it's overkill but it's nice nonetheless.

Oh wow, lots of stuff.

So we start in 1979, then the juggernaut starts in 1981? And there is 1 main universe and then some offshoot universes? right?

Barbatos Lupus is from Iron Blooded Orphans? Neat name. Would you guys consider it a good series?

Are any of the series on Netflix? I don't have Netflix yet, but I intend to here soon, and I would like to watch it.

Not overly surprised about body counts. Do they go through a lot of gundam suits?

As people who have watched gundam and built the model kits, which are the best suits to build and find? Care to attach pictures or links if necessary?

So where would the main timeline be the best place to start with Gundam, or do one of the alternate timelines have a good story that serves as a good sort of introduction to the series?

Model kits there isn't a bad line per say it's a matter of preference. If you got the space, the 1/100 master grade series are really good especially the katoki redesigns (these are denoted with ver.Ka)

Personally these days I go for the smaller 1/144 scale so I can get more on my shelves, the detail is really good. If you have the cash, there is the 1/60 Perfect Grade which is the pinnacle of gunpla (word for gundam models)

As far as I'm aware you can't get any gundams on Netflix, though you can watch some of them legally online. Iron Blooded Orphans is one I liked but some fans felt the 2nd season flagged. The first opening though is epic. The barbatos is a beast, though it doesn't appear in it's lupus form till later on.

This is the first opening.

Try to keep "Raise your flag" out of your head after this...

I used to recommend starting with Universal Century but I now just say look and go with the style you like first of all, if you get bitten by the bug you'll be probably looking at them all in time but here's my top 10 if you want some inspiration.

1) Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (6 episode original video animation).
This takes place in the universal Century, set in the dying days of the inevitable hear war and shows what the war is like for a young boy in a colony that's been largely unaffected by the war. This of course doesn't last when he crosses paths with a pilot from Zeon. This is simply a fantastic story, and the ending is traumatic.

2) Turn A Gundam (50 episode series) This series is set in the Correct Century timeline and it has a extraordinary premise. The technology of those living on earth is pre-world war 1 and everything is nice and for loran, the hero of the piece, he couldn't ask for more. Then his bosses arrive to repopulate the earth. See loran is a spy sent down to the earth from the moon is advance for the moon race to inhabit the earth once more. The moonrace use mobile suits that they've dug up on the moon and developed themselves. It's during the beginning of the invasion that loran finds out that what everyone thought was a statue was in fact a mobile suit, the eponymous Turn A Gundam...Turn A Gundam debuted as the 20th anniversary project and is the first series since 1993's Victory Gundam that gundam's creator (Yoshiyuki Tomino) worked on, with mobile suits designed by legendary artist Syd Mead (go Google Turn A Gundam to see his design, he styled it after a kickboxer). The premise is that all gundam shows that aired before turn a, all take place on a very long timeline where humanity managed to survive, rebuild and nuke itself to almost obliteration and repeated the process. This is known as the Turn A Bang theory and is evidenced in the series by various old mobile suits popping up and different technology (the wing zero battle system is used in the Turn X Gundam, used by the final antagonist). I love it for how different it is from anything before and after. The first opening is proof of this:

Joint 3) Gundam F91 (movie) Seabrook ano is living a nice life on a frontier colony (one of the ones furthest from earth) living with his sister, dad and his girlfriend and her father. When the Crossbone Vanguard attack in their bid to start their own empire and to capture their leader's daughter...who is Seabrook's girlfriend.

I love this movie even though I know I shouldn't, it's plot is an entire 50 episode series, condensed into 2 hours runtime, so characters are introduced and killed very quickly and there's actions the character's do that come from nowhere. Still I can't help but love it, from the way it apes star wars in places (the main villain is a darth vader wannabe and you can hear snippets of the imperial march if you listen close enough) to the mecha designs. The F91 is one of my favourite designs in all gundam, I've got the master grade sitting on my shelf and it's a joy to behold. Oh and this movie has also got one of the cruelest ways for a civilian to die, and woman is fleeing while carrying her son and is hit on the head by a motorcycle sized empty bullet casing, which came from a grunt mobile suit that was supposed to be protecting the civilians...the kid then gets up and tries to get the mum to move again till one of Seabrook's friends rescues him.

Joint 3) Char's Counterattack (movie) it's Universal Century 0093 and Char Aznable has rose another Neo Zeon, it's goal: help humanity leave earth to began their evolution in space...if they want to or not. Standing against him is Amuro Ray, elite pilot of Londo Bell, a special branch of the Earth Federation forces. The two will now finish the rivalry that started in the original gundam series.

Do not watch this film until you have seen at least the original series (or movie trilogy) and Zeta Gundam as this movie finishes the stories of Amuro Ray and Char Aznable (who during Zeta tries to hide under the name Quattro Bajeena). The end fight is well done though sunrise interfered and wanted the fate of the two main characters to be in the air while Tomino wanted to be explicit about their fate. In the end, sunrise got their way with the movie while Tomino got his way with the novel versions, killing them off. There is good designs in this movies from the grunts of the Neo Zeon, to the simple design of the Nu-Gundam (though the hi-Nu gundam from the novel is far better). My favourite though is Sazabi, Char's personal mobile suit.

5) G Gundam (50 episode series) Ready Gundam Fighters? Gundam Fight Go! Set in the Future Century timeline, G Gundam centers around the gundam fight, held every four years to determine who gets control of earth and the colonies (here the colonies are based on countries and generally you have to be privileged to live there sort of like Elysium) Domon Kahsu (spelling?) Is Neo Japan's fighter but aside from representing his country (which is the last thing on his mind) he's after information on his brother. A man who he believes has killed his parents and ran away with the prototype ultimate gundam...

Okay, so G Gundam is the first alternative universe that Sunrise did after Victory ended and the first gundam series that Yoshiyuki Tomino didn't have a hand in, so the production committee really went different. This is basically dragonball z with mecha, and I love it. Each character pilots a Gundam and is themed after their country to a degree (often to stereotypical degrees and probably racist ones as well, like Neo Holland's gundam is a windmill...no, I'm being serious) Design wise the lead gundam, Shining Gundam and it's upgrade, God Gundam are really nice. The supporting character's mecha is also eyecatching with designs like Rose Gundam, Bolt Gundam, Gundam Maxter and dragon gundam. Then there's the rest of the designs the series throws at you like Nobel Gundam which is a Gundam wearing a Japanese girls sailor school uniform. This show had to be slightly censored for its American release so the God Gundam became Burning Gundam and the antagonist Devil Gundam became Dark Gundam...wonder why they changed those names >:oP

Here's the first opening for G Gundam

Okay I'm going to have to finish this top 10 later as I've just realised that this post has taken me over three hours to write

Thanks Dmax, happy to help :D Glad my knowledge is helping someone :)

Anyway, now for the last half of my top 10!

6) Gundam Wing (50 episode series + 3 episode OVA/movie *See below*)

The year is After Colony 195 and the tension is high between the Earth Alliance and the colonies. In the middle of this, a special forces group called Oz is making its own plans. However, they won't be unopposed as five scientific geniuses send to earth five powerful mobile suits called Gundams, each with a highly trained pilot. The pilots set out to destroy Oz and bring peace to the colonies...

First airing 1995, this was to be the series that allowed Gundam to conquer the west. For many this was their first and as such the designs are imprinted on their minds from the lead, wing Gundam to upgrades like Deathscythe Hell Gundam. The grunt mobile suits provide their own comic relief of sorts as Leo's are destroyed every episode almost, and by the truck load. The character designs are all individualised giving the characters their own visual identity which carries over to their Gundams.

In January 1997, a three part OVA sequel appeared to carry on the show, featuring redesigned Gundams (the custom variants) and carrying on the story while also providing details from before the original series. In 1998, the three episodes were cut into a theatrical movie for release in Japanese cinemas.

As usual, here's the first opening (which was remixed and used as the credits in the toonami version)

7) Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans (50 episodes)

...Said a bit above about this one already :D

8) Gundam 00 (50 episodes)

The year is 2307 A.D. (yes this one takes place in the future of our timeline, and the first one to do so) and wars are still rampant. With the three major power blocs unwilling to end conflict, in steps Celestial Being, which will do it for them. Armed with incredible technology in the form of four gundams, Celestial Being starts to intervene in all conflicts, destroying all who would wage war. Each Gundam is piloted by a Gundam Meister, a highly trained pilot...

For a while I loved this series but there was things that rewatches pointed out to me that I couldn't take seriously anymore which reflects it's place here. The designs are good and there's some really fun gimmicks explored and it even touches up on the theme of humanity's evolution. Just beware the silly enemy names...like Bring Stabity and Revive Revival.

9) Gundam Build Fighters (26 Episodes)

Sei Lori dreams of competing at the world championships of Gunpla fighting (two Gunpla models go into a arena and fight) but all he's good at is building the Gunpla and rubbish at piloting them...then he meets Reji who pilots without knowing a thing about Gundam! Together they form a formidable team.

This anime is all about the Gundam models, how to put them together, what you can do with them and which ones you can get. So it's a commercial, but it's one heck of a commercial. It's filled to the brim with Gundam references and I love it to pieces.

Gundam Build Fighters first opening

10) Gundam ZZ (47 episodes)

Its U.C. 0087 and for Judau Ashta and his friends on the Colony Shangri-la, life is about to take a drastic turn when the heavily damaged arghama arrives in port. The battered A.U.E.G ship is under-manned and makes a juicy target, especially with its now pilotless Zeta Gundam to thieves and to a fully energised Neo Zeon. Though they want to take the Zeta for themselves, Judau and his gang may have to use it to defend their home first!

So ZZ starts off more or less directly from the ending of Zeta, but rather then keep the tone the same as that series, Tomino did a one eighty (it should be known that he was feeling better in himself at this point) and made the first half of ZZ very light hearted which earned this series a lot of scorn. While planned changes never occurred, Tomino did make the second half more serious. Despite the name the actual ZZ Gundam doesn't show up till later on in the series. The character designs in this show is very eighties, I mean they were eighties in Z but it got turned up a notch here. Again it had an earworm for a first opening.

Gundam ZZ first opening

In case any one was wondering Gundam unicorn was my runner up...

Hey guys, I've been inching my way into Gundam lately so I could use your help with some things.

Firstly, I picked up a Robot Damashii GM Sniper II the other day. I like it very much. It's just a soldier model, right? Nothing special?

Image

Anyway, I'm now looking into picking up two others. One of which is the Metal Damashii 00 Raiser, because of love that design. Problem is, I don't know what the other one is? I just have a picture I found somewhere, sometime, somehow. Hell, I'm not even sure if it's real or fanmade. Anyway, I could use some help identifying it.

Image
Any idea what it is?

Secondly, I'd like to watch a Gundam show, and since I like the 00 Raiser I thought I'd try Gundam 00? Is it good for a beginner? And if not, what should I try first, and should I avoid 00 entirely?
For all intensive purposes, I am not longer active on Seibertron. If you want to find me, I'm most easily reached on Twitter, @sigma_magnus

00 is a good place to start if your unfamiliar with gundam as it's one of the alternate universes of gundam that's unconnected to the main branch (which is the universal century timeline). Depending on what you think of the first half may colour your opinion of the second but the mecha designs are topnotch.

Now as for you mystery mecha, a quick Google doesn't bring up much information. Theres design elements that I recognise but I don't think it's a gundam, at least not a mainline one but what information is found has put forward the possibility that it's one of the original designs from the super robot wars franchise. I need to dig deeper to see if that lead goes anywhere.

Your GM sniper is indeed a soldier mecha, not a special (gundam-like) unit

Your mystery mecha seems like a fanmade thing to me, i do recognize a lot of Wing and Wing EW design elements in it, such as the kneecaps and the pads on the forearms.

Thank you both! I'll start watching soon, and tell you what I think once I finish. Though that could take awhile. :-P

Zero, if you do find out, let me know! If it's that obscure I doubt there's a figure, but at this point I just wanna solve the mystery already.

Also, forgot to ask, sub or dub?

Sub!

Out of preference, or is the dub bad?

I just prefer to have the original japanese voices with english sub, i consider it more natural, and it sometimes gives me an understanding of the language :)
Also, dubs can sometimes sound terrible.

Fair, depending on the show I feel the same way. Though now that I check what I'm using, the sub isn't an option apparently...

I've listened to both for 00 and I like both, dub is good if you're planning on watching it while doing other things or at night when you might strain your eyesight watching subs.
