The hardest game you ever played?

What's the most frustrating, time-consuming, and nerve-wracking game you ever played? The game that made you say "F**k it!" and throw your controller down, only to pick it up again days or even hours later? And did you finish it?

Probably Rogue Legacy. Beat it after two months of struggling. Good game, though.

Right now for the PS4, that's obviously Bloodborne. Notorious difficulty, and even after weeks of leveling up, you still feel weak when facing newer enemies.

The single most difficult game for as long as I'e been playing video games, though, has to be Ace Combat 5 - The Unsung War. That second-last mission, at least. You had to maneuver through a winding, obstacle-ridden tunnel while trying to maintain speed as the damn doors start shutting...I still shudder at the memory.

After weeks of trying, I actually gave up for a few months. But then I went back to it one fine day, and actually made it through.

The rest of the game was quite manageable, though. It's just that second-last part that really breaks your sanity.

Any game where the player is the only one in the fight who can be stunlocked, so enemies can just interrupt your combos at will. Ninja Gaiden 2 comes to mind here...

Bloodborne is easy. I think I have maybe 3 or 4 bosses left (one of them being an optional end boss), and I've only died in the game once. And it was on purpose, so I could get those bag guys to take me to the Unseen Village, or whatever that place is called.

Dark Souls, though, the first one, I can't even get past the third boss. **** those gargoyle things.

Bloodborne? No. Dark Souls? uh-uh. Try Demon's Souls. **** that game. Everything in that game. Just all of it.

Not getting defensive or anything, but...

The OP asked what is "the hardest game YOU ever played?" For me, on the PS4, that's Bloodborne. In my history of gaming, it's that last mission in Ace Combat 5.

TBH, I've never played any of the prior Souls games before--was never into these kind of games. I only got Bloodborne because it was bundled with my PS4, and was cheaper than getting a standalone.

Now, as compared to many other RPGs that are NOT from the Souls franchise, the difficulty was quite noticeable.

And yes, it's not "hair pulling-ly" difficult as long as you take the time to level up and practice dodging. And like you, I only died a maximum of once or twice (fighting the werewolf in the sickroom with your bare hands couldn't have had any other outcome, and the second time was purposely rushing into the Cleric Beast fight so I can get insight to level up). As soon as I started leveling up, I managed to not just survive but actually thrive. As long as I ept my levels high enough in a given area, it's quite manageable.

All in all, it's more the reputation of it that makes it seem harder than it should be. I said as much in those Game Progress posts I made. The whole fricking internet keeps telling you how hard the game is, and eventually, you just start to believe it. Even at level 92, I'm still hesitant to take on Vicar Amelia, largely due to everyone in the game forums crying over how they got their ass whooped. Thing is, I killed the Blood-starved Beast with almost no effort. Black-Church Garb, fire-paper on a Kirkhammer, dodged a lot, and it went down just like that.

You know what they say about making a statement enough times....

That's the first Souls game, isn't it? Glad I never bought that one, or it'll make a very expensive tea coaster on my desk.

I bought Demon's Souls a week ago. I've only gotten past the first area. I don't feel like doing the rest. It seems to be just a trollish ass game. Everything can and will kill you for no reason at all. I only ever died on the tutorial boss, but I've come close to death enough times to know that **** that game.

Nope. I killed it with my bare hands right at the beginning of the game. Then, fought the other enemies in the area with my bare hands until I got to the lamp thing. I'm just saying it's not impossible.

Charged R2 from behind followed by a visceral attack?

I tried that on the werewolf the first time around, but I must have gotten too close to it, and it turned around and...you guessed it, dead hunter. After the first death and getting a weapon at hunter's dream, I tried it again with an extended saw cleaver--the added ranged helped a lot.

The villagers at Central Yharnam are scrubs even without leveling up, though.

I'm not trying to troll ****. I'm just saying it isn't impossible. The hell would I get out of trolling for some **** as menial as this? My point is, is that compared to Dark Souls, Bloodborne is easy. It's like people go into Bloodborne thinking it's going to be as unfair and punishing as Dark Souls, when it's really not.

Three particular stories come to mind....

I solo'd Halo 1, 2, 3, and ODST on Legendary. But they must have ramped the difficulty way up, cause I only got halfway through Reach on Legendary before I rage quit. One single room took me probably four hours to clear, so like, an entire night of playing. I did it, then dropped the controller and haven't played a Halo since. I even bought Halo 4 on release day, still haven't opened it. :-x

I thought, in Capcom VS SNK 2 you had to unlock characters by playing on higher and higher difficulties (though it was mostly qualifying by certain aspects like time and perfect wins and such). I qualified for the Shin Akuma fight on the highest difficulty, and rage quit (again) after hours of getting murdered. Seriously he was so fast/strong that the match would literally be over in less than 10 seconds. Never did beat him.

Yoshi's Island (Super Mario World 2) on the SNES gave a % of completion per level. If you got 100% on every level on a particular world, it opened up a minigame, and bonus level that was reaaaallllyyy hard that you also got graded on. Well, I got 100% on all levels, and every bonus level even, EXCEPT for the last bonus level. So I had 100% completion on 99% of the game. Hours I spent....

I don't game much these days... >:oP

So what? If other people think it's hard, it's hard for them. That's what this thread is about. It doesn't matter whether you think it's easy or whether or not it's impossible. I know it's a tricky concept for you, but try to keep up.

And he never even said it was impossible, so I don't know why you'd bother bringing that up.

To be honest, I think it's less a case of trolling (at least not intentionally) and more like unabashed and somewhat obnoxious showboating. I really don't think he means any harm, but well, that's Sly for you--ever the diplomat. ;)

That's the other thing I figured. Like the kid who claims to have found something easy when everyone else is talking about how hard it was.

...well, not like that since it's exactly that, but you get what I mean.

Back on topic, classic Mega Man. Mega Man X to a lesser extent (Though I've yet to actually beat one of those) but classic Mega Man has always been incredibly tough for me. Also any Castlevania from before Symphony of the Night, and also Order of Ecclesia.

Castlevania 3 NES, in particular, the third route where you meet Alucard and enter Dracula's castle from below.

There's a stage where you have to jump up falling blocks and it's incredibly difficult.

I got (I think) to the last level, and there was an area where you had to jump from moving cogs that I simply could not get past.

Demon's souls was more the cheap type of difficult. You need the soul duplication glitch to get anywhere in that game. If you to exploit to win, then the game is flawed. I know there are fanboys who'll cry 'git gud' and that whatever I had trouble with was easy on the first try for them, blah blah blah, tis the nature of most souls fans...Theres a boss in Demon's Souls who LOWERS your soul level, as an attack. And you gotta earn that back, grind that back, theres no easy out. It's bullshit.

Real difficulty? Either Devil May Cry 3, or God Hand. MGS3 also had it's moments. Also worthy of mention is Xenoverse, but only during very certain missions, and it's more cheap than hard, but still, some quests are maddening.

DMC3 is the sort of game that gets easier with time and practice. MGS3 is the sort of game that gets easier by just turning the game down to "Very Easy" and getting the EZ Gun. God Hand...yeah, that one I struggled with. (But what a ride, though!)

While we're here, Final Fantasy 3. Especially the final dungeons, Crystal Tower and World of Darkness. Never mind the fact that attack order is 100% random, so there's no use planning out the next turn. (If you're healing, you have to hope Cure goes off at the right time, try to use it pre-emptively, it might get wasted, if it goes off too late, everyone's dead already) But the game has no save points at all. Saving can only be done from the World Map, and the only strip of land you can save on is between CT and the prior dungeon, Labyrinth of the Ancients. So CT and WOD have to be done in a single shot, which can take several hours. Die to Cloud of Darkness at the end of it all? Sorry, chump, hope you really like repeating the last three hours of the game.

I agree about DMC 3.

DMC 3, while undoubtedly difficult, was manageable once you start to learn the intricacies of the game mechanics--boss strategy guides help a lot, too. It's a good balance between the first DMC and the DMC2.

I think I just remembered one game that totally kicked my ass. The first DMC. Maybe I just suck at these games, but I couldn't even get past the first boss (lava spider thing). I had to use a Gameshark disc to basically god-mode through the whole game.

I feel like such a lousy gamer, I haven't heard of half of these games.

The most frustratingly difficult game I've ever played was Attack on Death Star 2 level of Rouge Squadron 2 on the GameCube. That short jog to the exhaust port took me weeks to survive. Then, after blowing up the Powercore, you had to survive the flight out of the death Star. Three deaths and the entire level would reset. I seriously thought I was going to go insane playing it.

F-Zero GX, story mode at least. "Normal" difficulty is pretty insane, and then to unlock everything it requires you to beat them all again on "Very Hard"! I think after all these years we've only gotten thru 3 levels, haha.

Thankfully there's the regular racing tracks, customization, a crap ton of racers to start with, etc..

Yes. F-Zero for GBA.
Now, I'm bad at racing games in general, but that game was ridiculously hard.

I'm playing through Demon's Souls right now, It's actually -not that bad- but most things I've had to deal with are my own fault. The game encourages you to be strategic with your approach to each enemy, whether the approach is cheap or not, if it works just do it. There's usually more than one viable method for each critter.

Hardest game I've ever played:

I WANT TO BE THE GUY
