I looked through the forum and couldn't find any threads specifically dedicated to Zelda, and I figure there's a big enough following and enough games to have it's own thread.

If not, apologies, Burn burninate! :-D

If anyone has been wondering where the hell I've been for the past.... 2(?) months, it was here.

I have been spending, literally every spare waking hour, playing this $%^&ing game. Not even a slight exaggeration. I'll be putting together my thoughts on it today as well

I'll dive in. My thoughts/feeling on...

Wow. Alright. I’ve been awol from my main hobby for months, playing a video game. It actually pulled me out of the gaming coma I’ve been in for years, but does that mean it’s the best game, or Zelda EVAR? Not exactly….

SPOILERS!

There’s a long story that actually led me up to getting a Switch, and Zelda, but TLDR they were essentially free. Which without that, I don’t think I’d have gone on this gaming journey. I had intentions of giving the Switch to my niece (avid gamer and Zelda lover as well) and the pair of us started playing BOTW as a team even going so far as to plan to only play the game when we’re both hanging out. Initially, I was extremely put off by BOTW, and was so-so about the Switch itself. Quickly, the plan disintegrated to dust as I became hopelessly addicted in spite of my (major) gripes. And in order to not renege on my deal with my niece, I straight up bought her her own Switch and Zelda so I could keep it and play guilt free

Why do I hate the game?
I don’t now, but I sure did in the beginning…..
-The weapons break. Easily. And all the time.
-Link is as fragile as a quail’s egg. You WILL die. A lot. At least in the beginning.
-Due to his fragile state, you’ll need to heal a lot. Can you cut some grass to find a heart? Nope. Almost all restoration comes from eating food, and crafting food.
-Rupees are hard to come by, and almost never found in the wild. Yet another thing you can’t find by cutting down some grass.
-Actually, pretty much everything you’d expect to find cutting down grass, you don’t.
-No items/tools. If you’re expecting to find something like the Hookshot in this game, you’re out of luck. In place of these items, Link is essentially given powers. Kinda like Magneto, also you can form ice blocks from water, make bombs out of thin air, stop time, ect.
-The “dungeons”. They are few (4!!!), short, and devoid of enemies. Because of all that they don’t even really feel like proper dungeons.
-The dungeon bosses, are all some weird form of Ganon. Not incredibly exciting.
-The story was pretty tame, in spite of leaving out notable tropes like the Triforce, the Master Sword, and essentially Ganon himself. I’ll explain the Ganon thing later…
-The monster/enemy lineup is pretty small, making most battles very repetitive.
-The difficulty. If you pay like me, it goes from hard, to easy, then really hard to possibly unwinnable on Master Mode.

Why do I love the game?
The map is huge, and unbelievably immersive. You become focused on completing said map, which leads to you gearing up to do so, which leads you to finding/doing shrines, which leads you to farming, and so on and so on and so on. Everything you do leads to something else, and everything you try to do gets side tracked by “oooo shiny let’s go over there”. Link's "powers" while initially listed as a negative, really grew on me. They're a lot of fun.

One thing I was particularly focused on was making Link NOT SUCK. Remember when I said you die a lot in the beginning? It’s because you start with 3 hearts, no armor, and almost everything in the environment can (and tries to!) kill you. And even when you get armor, it’s worthless until you upgrade them up a couple levels. Which, material farming for said upgrades, is a friggin chore in itself. I collected every piece of armor in the game, upgraded them to the max, got all 120 shrines, then decided it was time to “finish” the game. Still lots to do, but I thought it was time to end the story mode. And I’ll tell ya, that ending was underwhelming and WAY too easy.

There’s plenty to do afterword’s with the DLC (namely Trial of the Sword), which if done left me thinking that my (now) already overpowered Link will be even more OP…. what’s the point? On normal difficulty, not much. In Master Mode…. It would undoubtedly be worthwhile. But MM might be so hard that I can’t even complete it. But I started… so we’ll see where that goes. And that’s currently where I am. I’m sure I can beat the game to the point where I am in the normal difficulty, but Trial of the Sword in Master Mode is giving me the sweats. And if I get all the way to that point and can’t do it (because TOTS is end game material) I will be extremely upset. The difficulty didn’t need to be ramped up to “unrelenting”. So far the experience leaves me feeling there’s no happy medium. It’s either so easy that it’s unrewarding, or it’s so hard that it’s no longer fun. But it is still early in my Master Mode run through… perhaps my views on it will change…

I gotta talk about the story. Pretty much everything that’s cool and worth talking about, happens before you start the game. 100 years before in fact. So it sort of ruins the “urgency” of the situation. And in my opinion, there’s only one real character in the game this time around: Zelda. It was refreshing to see her actually given some character this time around, but she was literally it. Link once again is a mute $#@!, which fine I get it, but I think it’s time to give him a voice. And Ganon is literally just a THING in this game. A plot device. He has 6 incarnations in this game, all (uninspiring) mindless monsters with no dialogue. He’s just a “force”, and you gotta stop it. Honestly, when it was all over I felt kinda robbed, as the final boss fight might as well have been against a tornado or tsunami (with some eyeballs to hit obviously). After all the build up, I wanted to HEAR him talk. And while I liked Zelda a lot, the boring ending did her no favors. Even with the additional “good ending” cut scenes.

I feel like I’m harping a lot, but I really do love this game. I just can’t help but feel it could be SO much better. Like..
-The weapons breaking. I understand why they did it now (adds variety) and the break/recharge cycle of the Master Sword makes it so your other weapons aren’t redundant. I hated both those points before, but I’m alright with it now. With tweaking, I think I’d actually love this direction. Simply give the other weapons a durability count YOU CAN SEE, and have the option/ability to repair items like in WoW or Diablo. It actually really sucks to see an amazing weapon (like a 100+ Lynel sword) break and disappear to nothing.
-Make Rupees more plentiful to find in the wild. Essentially the only way I found to make money is to go snow bowling. And I %$#@!ing hate that game.
-Give us back the traditional dungeon type.
-More different types of enemies!
-Make the difficulties not so… night and day.

One last thing, the Koroks. Yes there’s 900 of them, and you get nothing for completing it, but it’s optional so it doesn’t bother me. It’ll give me something relaxing to do once I’ve done literally everything else on the crazy hard mode

Wrll howdy, yeah I took a six to eight month trip to the wilds of Hyrule myself. I found the weapon breaking annoying at the mworst and just a dumb mechanic as it adds nothing to the game and getting more weapons is stupid easy. I only died a handful of times, but it never bothered me. Zelda games are super easy most of the time anyway.

There is a lot odd about the game and sometimes I feel it didn't even stay life as a Zelda game. BotW is either boringly easy or infuriatingly hard, not much middle ground. There's a lot good and a little bad, but I enjoyed all of it until I ran out of **** to do that I cared about. Haven't even bothered with Ganon yet. I do have that way point warp thing right outside his hidey hole though.

Did all the shrines, most of the upgrades, some of TotS, some of the DLC, but mostly just followed my nose and explored. And that's where this game excels. BotW isn't about the destination, it's about the journey ;)^

Also **** the bowling game. It's way faster and more efficient to hunt the northern snow field for prime meat then cook 5 of those and sell them get rich quick.

Also Amiibo farming. I have fake Ammibos (fauxmiibos if you will) that I was farming everyday (or just change you system clock and restart the game). All the weapons d supplies you can handle. Some also give you special armor and weapons. Need a set? Hit me up and we'll talk

Wow.

I guess I'm the glass half full guy. You like it, but it can do no wrong in my eyes!!

I love this game. It's been my game of choice for the last year and a half, and yeah I take a few weeks off here and there NOW, but like you guys I definitely played the shirt out of it for that first six months and I'm still exploring today. I don't think I'll be finished "normal" mode until I've scoured every inch of the map in "Hero's Path".

I actually liked the weapons breaking and being super fragile. It felt more real to me. I do wish there were smithy's in the game to repair weapons, but that's the only thing I'd change.

It's funny, I farm by smashing rocks and selling the ore for monies

I actually haven't completed Trial of the Sword. Not even the first set. I feel like that's end-game and I'm never gonna end!!

Honestly the TotS is pointless to me and no fun. It's basically a boss rush mode challenge. Do not like. I did finish the first step.

I'm at the fight the Ganonlett mutants again but with limited gear part of the Dlc, again no fun and the bonuses aren't worth my trouble. I'd like to check out the dirt bike, but I never use the annoying horse either.

With Amiibo farming the weapon system is null and void. I have an inventory full of 60 dmg (IIRC) royal swords, all the royal bows I could want and 999 of every arrow. More money than I could spend and a bad full of 10+ heart steak skewers.

But

I didn't start farming until I was basically done with the game anyway. Like back in the PSX days, I wouldn't use the GameShark until I was done/bored with a game to add playability.

So Shaj, where's your playtime clock at for BotW? I'd imagine pretty high. I'm just sub 400 hours. Might fire it up tonight, been awhile because I've been in space ;)^

I'm thinking Trial of the Sword on Master Mode is similar to those Ninja Gaiden (modern) boss rush things. What was that? The Ninja Master Tournament or something?

I'm over 200 hours, but I don't farm like Cary has. I'd play maybe 3 hours a day, some days 4 hours. Life and such otherwise :)

So all this talk of BotW made me fire it up tonight. I decided to go finish a dumb quest that I've been holding off on because I'm a resource miser (the weapon connoisseur).

This reminded me of one of my favorite BotW features, you don't have to have an active quest! Most games force you to always have some quest set as active so there's always a nagging pop-up or way point vying for your attention.

Not in BotW, turn em off and wander like a hobo ;)^

I was surprised when I finally looked, 240ish hours. I thought it'd be more :-?

I wasn't trying to be overly negative. I love Zelda's, and I love THIS Zelda. It's a blast to play (hell I'm doing it a second time on a painfully difficult mode) but just... it's not without it's issues

[/quote]Since Link to the Past is my all time favorite Zelda (and probably video game period) my standards were extremely high for LBW. And it fell short for me. It was still fun, but it was easy and short. However the wall mechanic might be one of the greatest things introduced to a Zelda game. It was innovative and tremendously enjoyable, and because of that alone I'd recommend playing it ;)^

So I just completed all 120 shrines and the 4 Beasts on Master Mode. I'm feeling pretty good about taking on Trial of the Sword, but I've still got some work ahead of me before I tackle that. All my armor is about 3/4 maxed and I'm pretty low on inventory spots. My Korok hunt so far has been pretty abysmal. And my parry'ing skills are not consistent at all... I feel like the timing is pretty unforgivable, or I'm just not good

Damn bro! You sure you need them Fauxmiibos?

The parrying still gives me fits from time to time, but I've never been good at parrying in games. I wonder if master mode timing is different?

But once you get the parry down, guardians are a breeze.

I avoid combat like a plague because it's just not worth the weapon damage and there is next to no payoff. I only fight when I'm farming ingredients. Majora's mask all day erryday.

Except, goddamn bats :-x

I coasted through normal mode without parrying at all, so I couldn't tell you. The dodging flurry strike seems to have the same timing though. So I'll just go with "I'm bad".

I do need the meebos! For the exclusive thingies, and consistent good weapon supply. Fighting things in master mode takes twice as long and it'd be nice to not worry about losing piles of good weapons.

Yeah the "SURPRISE!" enemies can be a goddam pain. The other night, all at once, while guardian farming (the big ones) I just engaged a stalker. Out comes skeletons, then chu's, then a ninja, the a FLOCK of bats. Like $#@! off 8-}

I hate the random encounter monsters the most, especially the stals. I always wear a mask to keep the baddies from bothering with me, but the stals, gels and keese don't follow those rules and once they agro you, everyone agros you. So much for stealth.

No I take that back, fire/electric keese are the worst. They show up out of nowhere and run your day :-x

So I was talking with itscramtastic and cobotron today about taking pics in BotW and it's something I dabble in from time to time. It started as I got obsessed with not only completing the compendium, but taking the best pics I could of all the entries. Then I started taking NPC portraits and then things just got weird. This is from my "Link's a Creeper" project. I have a few more, but let's just start with my favorite.

Image

Sorry for the frame and stuff, but I thought of sharing after the fact and there is no way to get pictures from your BotW album to the Switch in decent way. So screenshots it is. I was going to crop them, but the resolution is pretty bad. Of course I could start just taking screenshots without using the camera, but for now I'll just work with what I have.

So does anyone have any choice images from their album or compendium they would like to share? Hell even a pic taken with your cell phone will work :-? ;)^

*note I pulled my SD card from switch and just copied my screenshots to my PC.

I wish I wish I could take images from my Wii U version of the game. I have to take a picture of the TV (which never looks right) or the GamePad (which usually looks worse). It's sad.

You two are a couple a goofs, and I LOVE IT!

Yup! I'm in. One of my goodest best bros and co-workers is taking a break from his Switch to dig into some PSBox games, Red Dead and others, so he loaned me his Switch and a few games indefinitely.

I'm a big LoZ fan. I've played all the console versions, and a couple of Gameboy ones. I've even built my very own Hylian Shield.
I have always intended on eventually getting a Switch and BotW.

NOW I'M DOIN' IT!!!! WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!

I'm just barely into the game, but lovin' every minute of it.

Just got my camera. Haven't even delved into the world of photography.
But you know who's a creeper? That Bolson character. I'm keepin' my eyes on that fancy pantsed weirdo!
