You could build some custom shelves afixed to a whole wall. Like 1½" deep and 1½ minifig appart in hight. This may be a problem for dusting but you'll have a whole minifig textured wall. This thing could be GLORIOUS!

I've been looking into small display cases with glass front. They're shallow and can be wall-mounted, so ideal for minifigures. It's not something will be happening soon, because i still need to renovate the house (and it needs a lot of renovating, basically everything).

Those display cases sound like the right thing to use. Once you are completely set up, be sure to post pictures!
