I haven't gotten that latest Shout! release yet; the announcement implies this will be the same version? This will be the third time I've seen it in theater, and it would be awesome if it was the same print as at Botcon 2000 with the extra few seconds of Blaster interfacing with his control panel...but that also had an unfortunate time hiccup that cut off his toaster ovens line, so there's no way.

Heck they might even cut the s#!t out of it to make things more kid-friendly. The Fathom edition of 'DBZ: Battle of Gods' cut out the brief scene where Mr. Satan was actually called such. Oh well, going regardless.

I probably should've gone to some of those Hayao Miyazaki movies this summer, but Fathom is almost entirely about Rifftrax for me.

There exist two different versions of that movie, even in Japanese. An 85-minute theatrical version, and a 105-minute extended version that was first shown on Fuji TV. It was the shorter theatrical version that was screened in theaters outside of Japan. Both versions of the movie are available, in both Japanese with subtitles and in English dubbed form, on its DVD/Blu-Ray releases by FUNimation.

This is odd... I have attended several Fathom Events Rifftrax events, and my wife has been to a few musicals. While it's true they are usually on Thursday Nights (which September 27th is...), they usually have an encore on the following Tuesday. I'd love to attend, as I know there are theaters near me that always have the Fathom Events. But I always have obligations on Thursdays, so the Tuesday Encores have saved me quite often. This being a one night only event is definitely a bummer. My son has seen the movie a few times, but I'd love to experience it with him, and a few of my other friends as well on the Big Screen.

I guess I can only hope that enough pre-tickets sell to motivate them to add a Tuesday Encore. This is not unprecedented. Although it was Funimation (and not Fathom), dates were extended for Shin Godzilla's limited release in September 2016, although to be fair, that was a new film, not one that's 31 years old. Oh well, c'est la vie. I guess that's what I have the Blu-Ray, 2 DVD's, and 3 VHS versions for. ;)

As for what the audience will see however, I'd love to see an original print from 1986, but I'm sure those were not preserved. It will no doubt be a digital broadcast of the Blu-ray, though it would be nice if somehow they showed the 4K source (since S!F said the Blu ray came from a 4K newly restored Print). I'm sure it wont be edited in any fashion though.

Aside from seeing the film originally in theaters in 1986, I saw the film at a Hotel Ballroom at SDCC in 1993 (where I proved to my friends the swear word existed that had been cut from all VHS up to that time). Also I saw it at Botcon 2000, though I think that was just a projection of the Rhino DVD which had just came out IIRC

I'm one of the "old-timers" that got to see this summer of '86. Was memorable to me not only for its wanton violence (which I love(d)- I hated that the TV cartoon versions of our favorite characters hardly ever got so much as a scratch...) but because it was the first movie I saw without my parents. Ha! Incidentally, that theater was practically empty. As for me, it remains one of my all-time favorite movies.
I'm even breaking my "no more regular movie theater" policy to enjoy its return next month.

Man...32 years...where does the time go? I know I did not see it in the first weekend, but probably sometime the following week after a few friends had seen it and said how awesome it was. It was probably the middle of the week on its 5th or 6th day in theaters. (back then the school year did not start until after labor day...) . The theater was probably about 1/3 full for a mid day matinee but my mom took me and 2 friends (it was actually a friend-of-my friend, some guy I hardly knew), but we didn't care. The movie was awesome and is still one of the best theater experiences I ever had. Unfortunately as I stated above, I'll have obligations come 9/27.

This Saturday though I have invited some friends to watch the Blu ray in my home. We usually do double features at whoever hosts the event pics the theme (We've done 80's sci-fi and Westerns), so I'm doing animation. I would think GI Joe:TM would be a natural pairing for TF:TM, but I have some others I'm considering...Lensman, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Titan A.E. are some of my favorite animated films...

I don't think I saw the animated Transformers Movie until I started 4th grade that fall. I was really excited about the movie throughout the whole summer. The commercials had me really hyped because they just looked so epic to me. I remember the "Does Prime die?" commercials really resonating with me ... but also thinking "There's no way Optimus Prime would die!" A friend of mine who was a year younger than me, her name was Katie, was my big Transformers friend during elementary school. When we got back to school that September, I remember being shocked at her spoilers about what happened. Optimus died! Megatron killed Starscream! A giant planet ate Earth! Bumblebee died! So a few exaggerations and incorrect details she had, but still, the biggest shocker of them all just didn't resonate with me. I thought for sure she was pulling my leg or something. Regardless, when I actually saw the events of the movie unfold with my Dad and my brother, I was speechless ... and devastated! Crushed! I couldn't believe Optimus Prime really died. The movie was so epic. So many new Transformers. So many dead Transformers. It was a lot for 9 year old me to take in. And I don't think my Dad realized how devastated I was after the movie.

I must have saw it the first week of September, because I clearly remember watching Five Faces of Darkness when it debuted. I had really connected with Hot Rod during the movie, so when it got to Rodimus Prime's "death scene", I just couldn't believe it. What monsters those Decepticons were! I had to leave for school at that commercial break in order to catch the bus in time, so I sat in school all day wondering what the Autobots were going to do now that Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime had died, not knowing yet that Rodimus Prime was ultimately fine and that Springer did not become leader of the Autobots. I was very distraught! It wasn't until I saw the rest of the episode during the afternoon re-airing that I got to find out that Rodimus Prime was actually OK, but I'll never forget that very long school day worrying about the poor Autobots and being sad that Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime had died!

Once the movie came out on VHS, I was absolutely obsessed over it. About a year after the movie had come out, I used to brag that I had seen the movie over 50 times, and then 100 times (I might have been exaggerating a little bit, but I'm sure I hit those goals not long after). To this day, it's one of the only movies that I can recite almost line for line while watching it. It's burned into my brain like a favorite song.

This movie has a very strong place in my childhood. It definitely left its mark, intentionally or not, and continues to be one of my absolute favorite things to watch. It helped cement my love for all things Transformers and might very well have been what kept me as a Transformers fan during those pivotal years in my childhood.

Bought my tickets today so I can go see it with my wife and two daughters. My daughter is 9 now so it'll definitely be a passing of torch moment (though it's often a staple of background TV noise while I'm working so I'm sure she's familiar with most of it already). Can't wait to see it on the big screen again!

To be honest, I'm really not sure if I want to go see the screening of this movie or not. Were this ten or fifteen years ago, I'd be psyched up and all for seeing it. But nowadays, I've seen it so many times that I kinda feel burned out by it. I still haven't even bought the Shout! Factory Blu-Ray release yet (yes yes, I know it looks amazing).

Had to wait until the Tuesday after this came out for my grandfather to take me. It was a hot theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn with a failing AC. Every seat was packed that afternoon with a cloud of cigarette smoke hanging over the crowd (you could smoke indoors back then). There were a lot of older kids in the crowd too, cheering, cursing etc., everyone was surprised when Blaster ejected his tapes because it was the first time most people had ever seen them. I gave all the kids on the block an entire play by play when I got home.

Saw it again at a movie theatre with my parents in Greensboro, NC three weeks later. There was a Toys r us in the same mall where we saw the movie and my Dad took me to buy a Transformer. I lied and said I had all the figures on the shelves so he could buy me Ultra Magnus, who happened to be the most expensive of the assortment at $25.

TF:TM could have still been out in theaters in early September...not sure what the cycle time was on it, but I imagine it was shorter than most films. Still, back then, theaters were a bit more selective about when to pull a movie from theaters, and not so regulated as they are now.

According to TF Wiki FFOD premiered on 9/15/86, which was a Monday. I thought it corresponded with labor day (being Sept 1st), because IIRC all the kids at my first day of 5th Grade (which would have been Sept 2nd) were talking about it, but of course it could have just been TF:TM we were talking about, then FFOD 2 weeks later. I DO remember though that FFOD AND "Arise Serpentor Arise!" aired the same week. That (and the TF GI Joe Marvel crossover) was what finally got me into GI Joe, I had always turned it off when it came on before or after Transformers because it just didn't interest me like TF did. But from that point on, they were pretty much tied together, though I did never get into GI Joe comics or toys, I really did have a late blooming appreciation for the animated series.

Slightly OT... In 1990/91 I was in high school and was irritated that DiC brought back only GI Joe and not Transformers...in hindsight, that was probably a good thing though. (seeing as how I much prefer what Japan did with Headmasters, MF, Victory etc...)

I doubt that I got to see TF:TM on opening day but I know I did see it in a theater. My Grandfather drew the short straw and had to take me, in truth mom and dad were working and he drove. I don't remember it being the theater by my house but that makes sense since it was a niche film. The two things that stuck out to me at the time were the music and the fact that I couldn't process what I saw, I think this was the first time that I experienced death and didn't understand it. I think deep down I knew they couldn't keep Prime dead and I was right. This was the only film I saw on the big screen of the toy films that actually made it to theaters, didn't even know about the Rock Lords film until a few years ago. Over the years I've learned just how connected that film was to my life back then, many of the bands featured in the film I was or became fans of over time. I still chuckle at how Lion is connected to both Asia and Dio. I'm looking forward to going on September 27th with my Dad and sister as it's a bit of a full circle.

Just got my tickets.. I remember walking down Miracle Mile in Stockton back in 86, back when it was safer... and I'd just walked out of the theater. I was 5 years old and just saw this hero I looked up to die a horrific death, and wondered what was real or if anything could be believed in? My brother had the original Optimus Prime back in 84 and my first one was Jazz. It's been an amazing blessing to have such a franchise like this and Legend of Zelda that has had so many wonderful iterations of it's beloved characters throughout different generations and different palettes to play from. I'm excited to see where the franchise will go, although I do think that they will need to start moving away from G1 characters soon to keep things fresh. The cycle begins AGAIN.. and thus begin the BEAST WARS!!

Transformers: The Movie is probably my earliest consciously recallable memory. I would have been around 2.5 years old when it came out and my mum took my brother (who was 7) to go see the film, with me in tow. I obviously can't remember the "movie" itself, but I remember waking up to crying and the rough visage of Prime on screen just before he turns grey and snuffs it.

Skip forwards about 2 years and I actually get my own VHS of it, which is when I can actually remember seeing it properly. To say I watched it a lot would be an understatement and every sound, sight and song is etched into my memory.

A lot of new(er) (and by new I mean post Beast Wars) might not always get the full scope of the film to the community. I can remember
Rodimus Prime once said for a long time the movie was the community. It dominated the lore and whilst we're still seeing the effects of that (IDW: Unicron, Movieverse: Matrix), its hard to fully appreciate how much discussion we got from those 90 minutes of animation in the way back.
