I turned 5 in the summer of 84, and got Sludge that Christmas, but with so many awesome toy properties at the time, TF didn't really stand out as a favorite. Fans younger than I probably don't understand just how many other transforming/combining robot toy lines there were at the time, in every big-box, drug store, or Five & Dime, so it took a while for TF to pull away from the pack with its superior designs and fiction. I actually liked Thundercats and Voltron better than the pre-Movie cartoon, but my mom thought the former were sexually suggestive or something, and that the latter had too much satanic symbolism (not understanding who the bad guys were, I guess), so when I got in a fight in 1st grade over which Voltron was better, they decided to encourage my budding TF fixation and routinely buy me the mini-vehicles and cassettes, in hopes that I'd shut up about Voltron (dad bought me the big die-cast Lion Force toy anyway). I mailed away for an Ominbot and Powerdasher, which gave Hasbro an address to send that S.T.A.R.S. advance movie poster to, well before the first TV ads. There was never any doubt we would see TF:TM ASAP.

Funny, the only reaction I recall from other kids was the shout of "Laserbeak!" when the first recognizable character flew out. If there were any screams and crying when Op died, I must have been too stunned to notice. At age 7, I'd already gotten cynical enough to know the cartoon barely had continuity from one ep to the next, and that trailers always made movies look cooler than they actually were. So the question "Does Prime die?!?" was met with an understanding that nothing would actually change, so of course not. Therefore, seeing this in the theater in '86 was the only time a movie actually shocked me by being several times better than whatever I was expecting going in, an effect I will never experience again. Sure I liked Optimus, but maybe because my dad's the most stable guy on earth, I was fine with surrogate-father-figure-leader dying a heroic death and passing leadership on to a younger character I could actually identify with. And most of the other deaths amounted to characters whose toys were so clunky I never wanted them being replaced by cooler-looking new guys, so I was perfectly fine with it. Violence finally had consequences, including a better story and characters! And since my parents mostly played folk and country, the music was this huge breath of fresh air; I wouldn't budge from my seat until the credits were completely over, I just didn't want it to end.

As we walked out, the last family to do so: "I didn't know a movie could be that good!"

"Yyyyyeah, we're picking the movie next time." I think they may have actually said it in unison.

And when new eps of the cartoon came back, I realized it didn't have to end, and Transformers has been my favorite thing ever since. Animation quality apparently didn't register with me at age 7, but I genuinely liked where season 3's story went way more than in the first 2 seasons. And you know what? Rodimus Prime was actually a better leader; cartoon Op led his troops into certain death only to be saved by circumstances beyond his control at least two times too many for my taste. When we got a VCR for Christmas of '87, TF:TM was the first movie we ever rented, but I didn't get my own copy until early '98, from a video store that closed not too long afterward.

Saw it on the big screen once more at BotCon 2000, but will damn sure be seeing it at an AMC next month!

Those of us in Canada are in luck too!!

if you hit Cineplex's website, you can find listings of a few Canadian theaters playing this between the 29th and early October. its a lil tricky to find but just search for Transformers and you'll see "The Transformers" and you can then just enter a city to see if it plays in your area.

If you're in Ottawa, South Keys is playing it a few days between Sept 30th and October 6th!

so woo...we're not left out!

The TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE Adds 300 More Theaters, plus Canadian locations, on 27 September

Postby Va'al » Mon Sep 03, 2018 3:16 am

Motto: "Till All Are Pun!"
An update directly from Hasbro and their social media team, regarding the new showing of the 1986 Transformers: The Movie from Fathom Events, taking place across the US on September 27th - as it has been expanded to 300 more locations in the US and has also crossed the border to include Canadian cinemas too!

The main website for the event hosts can be found here, to locate the closest movie theater near you, and fellow Seibertronian shajaki has also gone through the pain of noting down all of the Canadian cinema locations too, copied out below from Cineplex.

Exciting news for Transformers fans! Another 300 theatres in the U.S. have been added for the one-night theatrical screening of The Transformers, The Movie on 9/27! Plus, there will be a screening in select Canadian theatres on 9/30. Head over to FathomEvents.com for a theatre near you! #Transformers #1986[/quote

Got really excited when I saw there were more theaters added, but it still looks like the nearest showing for me is in the next state. Hopefully ticket sales will be good so this can happen, again, when I have the opportunity to travel

Wow this is so exciting! I never saw it in theaters when I was a kid. This a dream come true. Can't wait to go and see it! Or maybe not. Prefer to watch it in my mind's eye to avoid being distracted if I watched it in Ottawa.

Two states away for me (Mass). It's exceedingly rare for Fathom to bring anything worth seeing this far north so I wasn't exactly optimistic when they added screens.

The limited release of this movie has absolutely nothing to do with its being animation instead of live action. This is a Fathom event. Those are ALWAYS limited releases, no matter what movie they show. Every movie released as a Fathom event is limited, be it for one night or several. That's the very nature of Fathom event movies.

Transformers: The Movie Posters from Fathom Events

Postby Va'al » Fri Sep 28, 2018 5:07 am

Motto: "Till All Are Pun!"
A number of Seibertronians took part last night in the Fathom Events screening of the original 1986 animated Transformers: The Movie, and some have shared the poster that was being given out at some of the participating theatres!

The poster features the same Livio Ramondelli art that was seen on the latest release of the feature, with Optimus Prime and Rodimus Prime taking front stage, and the rest of the cast around them, the Matrix, and Unicron in the background. Check it out below, and let us know if you took part in the screening!

Greetings My Fellow :BOT: :CON: :MAXIMAL: :PREDACON: :RUBSIGN:

Transformers The Movie was last night not only showed the movie but at the beginning there was a small feature presentation with Travis Knight on the Bumblebee movie showing practical effect interactions with the actors of the movie. That feature is on you tube at this time. Also included after that was the full scene of Charlie Watson meeting Bumblebee in the garage for the first time and how she freaks out and tries to run away as bumblebee freaks out and hides in the corner after his transformation. Their meeting was very puzzling and heart warming to both of them as she tries to figure out what or who he is. She mention that the noises he makes sounds like a bumblebee and that's what she will call him. He then points to her as she first thinks he likes metal cause she is wearing a metal band t-shirt but then figures he wants to know her name and she tells him, "I am Charlie Watson." "I am 18." "Today is my Birthday." All with such wonder and curiosity as she displays during the scene. Then it cuts to additional trailer footage which we have seen before from what was release this week. Then after the credits of Transformers the Movie there was 2 interviews with Stan Bush. Which he sang 2 electric acoustic guitar solos of "Dare" and "Touch". Very enjoyable night!!!

Enjoy, :KREMZEEK:

I wasn't able to make it last night, but I would have been more disappointed if they were giving out posters with the original movie artwork. I still have my Back to the Future poster framed from a 25th anniversary screening that uses the original 80s design. I'm not sure why companies feel compelled to create new poster/DVD art for films when they are rereleased because, in my opinion, the usually don't live up to the original.

I thought those two images looked familiar, you cad ;)

The Mrs and I had a good time. I'm not an audiophile nor cinephile, so I thought everything was great. A damn sight better than watching at home on my DVD.

The trivia before hand was too short and a bit easy, but the wrong answers were really good wrong answers.

The Bee movie extended sneak peak was unexpected and awesome, so was the Stan Bush stuff (glad we hung around after the credits). I wasn't expecting the posters so those were pure lagniappe.

Overall a great experience, glad we went and it was fun to rub elbows with fellow fans :APPLAUSE: ;)^

Greetings,

I'm having trouble trying to find online any figures on how much the movie made last night. I'd be curious to know. boxofficemojo just posted Thursday estimates, and TF:TM wasn't on there, sometimes movies are added later, but if anyone has any stat references, this would be appreciated. Just wondering if it was a profitable enough to warrant any future screenings.
Bucket/Want List: Botcon 2016 Customization Class Ratchet (G2 Deco), or Customization Class Ratchet (Marvel Comics Deco) **would also be willing to pay for an Unpainted Botcon 2016 Ratchet, TT Legends Fortress Head (only) with working Electronics

I wouldn't imagine such findings would be readily (if at all) available for such small-scaled limited special event releases like this, since this release wasn't intended to make a profit like any normal film release is; rather, this was just a special commemoration event coupled with hype-building for the next major film release.
