The transformers you should and shouldn't love

Postby ExciKaiser » Sun Aug 27, 2017 8:33 am

The regular top5 of WJ gave me this idea, however this is a list which will never be able to be pushed into the site, as it's very subjective and personal, and I expect different results from each person.

The idea is : Is there's transformers you love but who are generally considered as bad by the community ?
And on the other side, transformers generally acclaimed but who are "meh" in your eyes ?

I'll start with mine of course, but I'm curious to get your advices. (and with pictures it's better).

- Bad transformers that I love :

5. Energon Optimus / Grand Convoy
Image

Also known as "Fatimus Prime".
I have to admit my love for him was not really immediate. But it grew slowly as it's a very fun toy. And the day I received WingSaber changed everything, he's now on top of my shelf for years, and not ready to move.
I'll always regret the black and red repaint will never show up.

4. Energon IronHide.
Image

Big giant playskool car without properly hidden head as alt mode, I know he is main source of jokes in the TF universe.
But it changes nothing, I can't help but like him.
Like most of people, I wasn't interested at all, unil I found it on sale on a small shop (while looking at something else), I got it just because of the opportunity and started to love it immediately on the first transformation. He's fun, easy to transform and has a great robot mode and a not so bad combined form.

3. Cybertron Backstop / Saidos
Image

I'll be honest, I still don't understand why people don't like him.
It's true he lacks articulation, but it's apparently because of his looks that people don't like him. And that's what I don't understand. During BW area whe got rhinoceros under all possible forms, I'm happy they tried something different for him and didn't go for another Rhinox look.
Also I have the Takara version, who sports a really better color scheme in my opinion. It probably helps.

2. Classics Grimlock
Image

I remember all the hate on him at his release. Nobod was able to forgive the head feet, the non-g1 look and transformation etc.
For me it's sad the fact "it's not G1 accurate" can obliterate so much the fact he is a very good toy.
I love his overall look. yes, it's clearly not G1 grimlock, but are we really stuck that bad on G1 to not be able to enjoy him ?

1. Energon Grimlock.
Image

Ok, I admit I don't have a lot of arguments here. That's probably why I put it on first position.
I know he's bad, sculpting is poor, plastic is inferior to most energon, combined mode is .. well, I prefer to pass.
But he is still on my shelves. I really have no arguments for him, but I love him.
Sometimes I wonder it's not because everybody hates hims so much that's I somewhat love him. Strange. Tell me I'm not alone.

- Cool transformers I should be supposed to love (but I don't) :
(aka, let's have lot of ennemies)

5. Masterpiece Ultra Magnus.
Image

And indirectely all MP post MP10.
I'm sorry, but I can't. Everything looks so basic, big blocks on top of each other, with bonus points for the feet.
It's cool to be anime-accurate, when it's a good detailled anime. But in case of G1 with cheap animation, I don't see the point. Definitely, MP line will continue without me.

4. Classics Prowl (and all his repaints)
Image

It's not that I don't like him. It's just he's completely boring to me. I could have put Sideswipe and Mirage in the same line.
I know they're part of "Classics" line, but I think it's too much classicness for me, I need more. (gimmick, fun transformation, something else).

3. Universe Onslaught
Image

I sold it some months after receiving it.
I'm still not sure why I don't like him, but there's someting on the head, on the alt mode, the overall look.. Boring and ugly to me. But I've read so much love about him, I'm not sure to understand why.

2. TR Blaster
Image

I know why people love him, because he's the perfect incarnation of the G1 character.
But for me, it doesn't made him a good toy. I'm not fond of daily objects as alt mode, and when the alt mode is something that most of nowadays kids can't even identify, it only become ridiculous. With added points of ridiculoussness that are the datapads, trying to bring life of a feature which has no sense at all nowadays.
If at least he was able ot play some MP3, whith its size it could have bean easy to do, but he's not even saved by this.
I admit I got it. On Sale. For his base mode for my TR figures. When I play with him, I try to forget the other mode, it's a plain/boring bot who transform into a poor base and that's all.

1. T30 Arcee.
Image

Ok, let's get plently of ennemies here. (that's why I put her in 1st)
Again, I understand why people love her, she's a perfect incarnation of the G1 character.
And that's probably why I hate her. That's the perfect resume of how women were depicted in fiction in the 80's. If you need to summarize 80's take on heroines with a toy, here it is, from he alt mode to robot mode, all I see is Penelope Pitstop.
I really can't stand all of this. Added to the fact she's mainly a shellformer.
Fortunately, female transformers nowadays are better than that, Prime Arcee is so much better, I love Strongarm's take on femiine form, not even talking about Nautica or Windblade.

hopefully, there's the TR mold incoming, which looks way better in my opinion :
Image

And you, what are the top5 transformers you shouldn't love and the transformers you should love ?

Aah, I think I get it -- unpopular opinions. Thought about starting up a thread like this from time to time but never got around to it. Thanks for doing it for me

Totally agree on Arcee. Fantastic representation of the original design... Just a shame the original design is very uninspired, generic and just downright bad.

I'm also not the biggest fan of the Universe Prowl mold but for different reasons. The transformation is far too complex for what is essentially a very simple design, and it doesn't help that the neck platform thing makes the head section look very off.

Talking of Universe... Cyclonus is very disappointing. Transformation is epic, both modes look awesome... but lordy, that articulation. That awful, awful articulation.

Finally, T30 skrapnel mold. Just a bit of a mess with insect limbs all over the place in robot mode.

On the positive side of things... I friggin love CW Buzzsaw. Just a very fun toy with a cute bird mode and a very nice looking tablet mode.

Also heard people don't like T30 Tailgate but I'm not sure why. He's a wee bit fiddly, but he's still a nice figure that looks like the comic character and has a sick car mode. Shame about Groundbuster or whatever his name is but those Micromaster target master thingies weren't that great an idea to begin with.

I like TR Laser Prime's jet mode. There. I said it. It's not amazing but it's still cool and has this awesome swoosh factor.

CW Brawl is overly criticised I feel. There's a lot wrong with him but he's still okay for what he is.

Aaaaand finally, CW Leader Seekers. Best seeker designs in toy form we've ever gotten. Don't care if they're retools of Jetfire, don't care if they're 'too big', don't care if they're a wee bit hollow. They look awesome in both modes and come with a wonderful range of weapons.

Is it really loved / popular ? from what I see, people seem to prefer the legend-sized one.

I really can't follow you here. But that's the exact point of the topic. :D

I see no problem here. They're really hated ?

I got only Jetfire, because I prefer Autobots over Decepticons, so between to redeco I usually move toward the Autobot one.
But other than that, I see no problem. If I stumble over a cheap one, I may even take a Thundercracker.

Is it because of the size really ? that's probably the worst reason to hate a toy on my opinion. I remember Classics/Universe Powerglide got the same critics when he was released. "He's a minibot, he can't be ultra class".

I think we might be talking about the same Shrapnel as I am indeed referring to the Legends class one. The one that later got used for Chop Shop in Combiner Wars?

I've seen a fair amount of disdain for the leader seekers around here, and while size isn't the only grievance people have, it's one I've seen come up a fair few times. Ironically it ends up working for many display options -- cheaper MP stand-ins; alongside Leader Megatron and Soundwave; and for me personally, I find Leader Thundercracker will make for a great ex-RiD display with T30 Jetfire, TR Sound wave and CW Optimus with one of those 3p upgrades that makes him leader sized and VERY IDW accurate.

I wouldn't mind having the list from our Admin. ;)

It's true that I didn't mentionned G1s in my list, but I wanted to restrict to 5 in each.

But if I had to add G1 to each list, it would be two very linked ones.

As the one I don't like but popular : Six shot.
I got it some years avo and was extremely deceived. A big brick, not really fun to transform, especially considering his size.

On the other side, I got in same time the one I shouldn't like, but which I do : Quickswitch.
I love his colors, and I find him extremely fun to transform, to go from a mode to another.

I sold Sixshot and kept Quickswitch.

Ok, very 1st thing: Generations Arcee is NOT an accurate figure of the G1 character. Arcee didn't have any black on her in either mode.

I can't give you a list of popular figures that I don't like, but a few that are unliked by the majority but favored by me are:

MP-09 Rodimus Prime

Most people don't like him because of his QC issues, but mine is in pristine shape even now, and I think it's a beautiful piece.

MP-01 Optimus Prime

I don't care for MP-10 as a representation of Optimus Prime, I think that MP-01 not only looks better but is more accurate in bot mode. Truck mode, MP-10 wins, but I keep my MPs in robot mode.

G1 Powermaster Prime

Yeah, he's a total brick, but he was my first figure, and I liked the character from the Marvel comics. All subsequent figures bearing that name are inferior, and the Masterforce character is boring.

I've never understood the distaste towards Generations Arcee. I personally love the way the figure looks and don't think they could ever do a better job of representing the character in plastic. It's pretty much the ultimate Arcee figure.

A figure I've seen criticized quite a bit that I really like is TR Overboard. Sure, he's the third version of the same mold released in the line, but he's definitely the best of the bunch. The dino mode is perfect for him and it's a really good recreation of his G1 self for what he is. He scales great next to the FOC data discs and with TR Ramhorn, Shuffler, and Sawback. Stick him next to ML Soundwave and the data discs and you've got the perfect set-up! :x

Also, Platinum Edition Optimus Primal looks kind of good in those colors. (Please don't beat me.)

This ... thing

It does NOT deserve the attention It has received. Pointless character. Nothing special about It at all. Just another one of those over-hyped characters/toys that a handful of loud fanboys have built a band wagon for and jumped on.

YES! I really don't get the high praise for this guy. The skinny legs and terrible forearms bug the hell out of me. For me he rates pretty low on the MP scale, only above the MP-03 Seeker mold, MP-04 Megatron, and Tracks. He isn't even fun to transform, I feel like I'm going to break something off every time. If there was ever a modern MP that I think needs a do-over it's this guy (and Tracks and Grimlock).

MMh. No.

I don't know in which universe MP01 is not loved, but it's definitely not ours.

I'm sorry, but back in the days MP01 was THE holy grail. The one to have.

It may have been beaten by MP10 which is more recent, but it doesn't withdraw its popularity and such.

Same for powermaster prime. Even if people prefers the original G1 prime over PMOP, PMOP was not hated. It's completely different.

The fact that one Tf become more popular than a previous incarnation do not withdraw the popularity of the first one.

MP01 and Pmop can't qualify at all as hated TFs, that's the contrary.

If you need example of hated TFS, have a look at Energon Prime. Check back the olds news in 2003, there's NO positive comments. Not even one. This one was hated from the very first picture on internet.
If you want the same on masterpiece level, you can check MP03. Wrong color scheme, wrong transformation, internet went mad from the first teaser.

Ah, I should probably clarify: Burn takes nothing but his moderating job seriously, and expect any post not related to modding to in some way be sarcastic or jokey even if it seems over the top and hard to tell.

So, naturally, we know that truly deep down he's the biggest Alpha Bravo fan in the world; and loves him far more than terrible Marvel characters like Scrounge :D

Legends Arcee. It seems to not be acceptable anymore to like Arcee's G1 design, because apparently girly girls have cooties and real women have CHUNK or something. I don't care. I love this toy. Transformation is inspired, articulation is decent, likeness is absolutely perfect and she's truly adorable.

PCCs in general. They suck as combiners but they're great as Scout class standalone figures. Shame poor Sledge keeps breaking.

2007 movie Swindle. Not exactly the most well remembered Swindle but I like him. Cool car mode and a unique robot mode. He's more than welcome as part of the Swindle criminal family in my book- in my headcanon he got his face replaced with a lens to both anonymize himself and also to make it impossible for anyone to read his emotions during a deal.

As for things I don't love that I should...

MPs in general. I have nothing against them (I own G2 Sideswipe) but they're not really my thing.

Combiner Wars as a line. It had its moments but the HFGs were useless as feet (if OK as hands), redecoes were overdone and the overall standard of engineering, QC and articulation seemed like a bit of a flop.

The Classics Seeker mold, at least aesthetically. I have never handled one so I can't really comment but whilst the jet mode is superb, the robot mode is so-so. It's a bit stumpy and rather brickish.
