Top 5 Best Transformers Triplechanger Toys

Motto: "'till All Are One"
Every two weeks, Seibertron.com brings you a Top 5 list related to all things Transformers written by me, your fellow editor. These are my opinions (just like movie or game reviews hosted by sites are still just the opinion of one person) so what matters most is what you guys think of the topic or list, and I hope to see your own lists or comments on omissions and ranking. Let's have fun! All previous lists can be found here.

Top 5 Best Transformers Triplechanger Toys

Now a toy that changes from one form to the next is pretty awesome, as you can all attest to. But what about a toy that can change into 3 different forms? Transformers Triplechangers have been around since the G1 era and still thrive today. They are extremely tricky toys to pull off and thus there are very few amazing ones out there. Below are the ones that I feel pulled it off best across different eras and though they all have flaws, they are still pretty remarkable when you think of all the designing and engineering involved. Now all I required for something to be considered a triple changer to me were 3 distinct modes with 3 distinct play patterns.

5. Energon Shockblast

As you can tell from my #5 pick, I am looking at all robots that have three different modes, not just the classically labelled triple changers. Also, it's by looking beyond those that I realized Energon Shockblast does have three distinct forms and they work pretty well. Firstly, it is a gorgeous homage to G1 Shockwave and a much better placeholder in a Classics collection than the Generations figure we eventually got. His heft and size are perfect to represent this imposing robot. His tank mode works fine with a giant cannon that is very indicative of the character. It's also a rather sleek vehicle which hints as having as much speed and maneuverability as power. However, the real standout is the satellite mode. This is a very detailed and intricate third mode that will take anyone by surprise. The tank just splits into a myriad of ends with unfolding panels that give a beautiful sci fi look. The robot mode is very solid while also being sleek and with little kibble so you wouldn't think that he has so much hidden in him and that is why him having two other distinct forms is really surprising and gets him on this list.

4. Titans Return Astrotrain

Titans Return is the reason this list which was started back in 2014 took so long. Just as I was going to publish it, in comes a line which will include several triple changers per wave. So I waited for that one triple changer which really stood out. And it never came. Nothing was earth shattering or groundbreaking, especially when it came to the leaders with base modes which were also labelled as triplechangers. The voyagers had pros and cons all across which al made them about as good from one to the next. The ones with the best robot modes had poor alt modes (Alpha Trion) while there were some toys I found really great once you ignore their plane modes (Optimus and Braodside) which totally defeats the purpose of a triple changer. The one triple changer from all of Titans Return that I did think had redeeming qualities in all three modes was Astrotrain. I love the fluidity of the Transformation which tied back to the Stormbringer design. It is super cool to see older concepts brought to life and finally given a chance (come on Transtech Depthcharge!). Definitely a step up from previous attempts at this transformation scheme. I just find it a very elegant design which gives you an excellent G1 inspired robot mode whos deco rocked no matter which version you got. Plus, while heavily criticized, I think it was pretty cool to see an armoured train concept brought to life in the Transformers brand.

3. G1 Scorponok

Kids must have had a blast with Scorponok in the 80s as he is as fun a toy now, even with everything else that has come out since. Firstly, as a scorpion, his feet move as you roll him across the floor and the pincers have strong ratchets that lets you pick up any pesky autobot. Secondly,he is extremely imposing with his gigantic stature. He was actually the largest Decepticon toy in the G1 era and you can't conceptualize his girth until you see him in front of you, especially in robot mode. He's bigger than Trypticon, and that guy would go up against Metroplex, the CITY! Finally, speaking of cities, he also has a third playset/base mode that is pulled off surprisingly well, better than many of the Return of Convoy toys which also had a base mode as a third mode (especially this guy here). There are ramps for your little cars to roll off of or onto and the middle ramps even has a pushing mechanism so that your car can be pushed off the ramp. Also, the fact that he is a headmaster give you an extra little robot to interact with the base and it's many little interactive areas (like an elevator).

Image

2. G1 Astrotrain and G1 Blitzwing

These are the best G1 triple changers due to the very accomplished alt modes which do not clash with one another. Let's start with Astrotrain. The train is my personal favourite since it looks like an oldschool steam engine and pulls the look off elegantly, if you ignore the boosters in the back. Also, this toy's genius may not be as evident now as it was then but there are two remarkable aspects about this toy that may be forgotten. Firstly, it is the very first Transformer toy to have ball joints (for his arms), and thus extra articulation. Secondly, this toy is from 1985, just three years after the first operational flights of the space shuttle, so it was a very up to date alt mode at the time and a pretty accomplished one despite the more angular middlesection.
Blitzwing on the other hand has so much win since his two alt modes actually look more realized than Astrotrain's. They don't look odd and each of them don't seem to transform into something else aside of a robot. This is the only toy of the character where there is nothing off about the jet mode, unlike the Animated or Generations version. I especially love the simple and elegant folding mechanism that hides away the thread design for the tank. I really couldn't pick between these two and the fact that I find those alt mode combinations more accomplished than their classic updates really means something. They are both great examples of the potential for triple changers and have been so for 30 years.

1. Generations Springer and Sandstorm

What can be said that hasn't been said before. The Springer toy has been voted the best Transformers toy since the brand began back in 1984, and for good reason. All three modes work. The car is beefy while the helicopter is sleek and best of all, nothing obstructs or brings unnecessary kibble to the robot mode which is one of the sleekest designs ever found for a robot. This is undoubtedly the best articulated robot mode on this list, and he is a joy to pose. His robot mode is the best of the three since both alt modes have some flaws. However, it is the fact that all three modes are distinct while finally accomplishing a faithful interpretation of the character, especially the on spot look of Nick Roache's design, with a kickass robot mode that makes this the very best Triple Changer of all time. The Sandstorm figure takes a few more liberties from the character's roots but it all works just as well. While I am not the biggest fan of those giant wheels and how they add kibble to the robot mode, it does give him some nice bulk and I love how they both look like wheels on one side and VTOL propellers on the other. He tabs in even tighter than Springer! In short, these are both fantastic examples of a triple changer and it is a mold everyone should experience.

Honourable mentions: G1 Broadside, ha! Just messing. There is another toy I wanted to talk about but I don't know if he's a triple changer, so I will only mention him here:

Energon Tidal Wave (Shock Wave)
The reason he is an honourable metion and not on the list is because I didn't see Tidal Wave as a triple changer but instead a robot made up of smaller non transforming toys, like Magmatron or ROTF Devastator. However I realized that unlike those toys, these smaller vehicles do not combine to form a robot, they combine to form the robot's alt mode, which is a whole different ball game (of awesome). This makes this an amazing, intricate and unique Transformer with three distinct forms. Let's go through this. Firstly, there are three very different vehicles, and each of them have their own fun gimmick. The aircraft carrier is actually in scale with the actual airplane it comes with and features an elevator for the plane (which also transforms into a little robot). There is also a shuttle (well supposedly it is a troop landing craft) which has one of the cutest gimmicks ever. You open it up and you get an open area with benches for little robots (minicons) to sit. You then have a cosmic battleship with activated turrets once a minicon is plugged, triggering the action feature. These three ships then combine together to form a big warship, that strikes me more as a bigger version of the lego spaceships from the 80s (SPACESHIPS!). And then, this warship (SPACESHIPS!) formed from three seemingly non transforming vehicles actually transforms into a giant robot. It is really impressive, and totally surreal in a way, how you transform the alt mode as if it was one vehicle and not something made up of smaller vehicles. This means that you do not have to disconnect the separate vehicles to form the robot. Everything is in place for you to transform him from one mode to the next, with the combined warship mode serving as an intermediary between the robot mode and the three separate ships. So he is a triple altmode triple transformer (what would Thew call that?)

You should add TR Blitzwing along with TR Astrotrain as you did with their G1 predecessors. I actually prefer TR Blitzwing because they went too neo on Astrotrain for both of his alt modes. Its a shame we cant get an actual locomotive instead of these bullet train things which dont even exist on my side of the planet.

Kinda disagree on Shockblast though. Is that thing really a "satellite" or just a 3rd BS mode they came up with? Even the tank mode barely looks like a vechicle. Might as well call TR Blaster and PM Prime triple changers too if you count the BS 3rd modes Hasbro creates in the name of "playability".

Love astrotrain in most of his guises, TR one especially. However, I do prefer octane's more. At first I was a little disappointed with the TR version due to not it not tabbing as well as it was designed to. However, it grew on me, especially its fun transformation and excellent homage to the original toy/ character. Also, they managed to design it so as not to have the need of a detachable piece for his road tanker mode unlike his previous incarnations. Another th8ng that scored points with me even as a kid! Was the fact his two alt modes were related, whereas astrotrain was a bit of a stretch.

Skorponok is a great choice too, though I’d have find it hard to choose between him, trypticon and metroplex. The 2 headmaster triplechangers were always on my wish list but never had the opportunity to acquire them...
My personal prime collection so far in descending order of how great i reckon the toy is -
FE Prime, Silas Breakdown (Powerizer), Dreadwing (Powerizer), FE Bulkhead, Voyager StarScream (Powerizer), Ratchet, Soundwave, Arcee, Voyager Megatron (Powerizer), Wheeljack, Thundertron (Powerizer), Ultra Magnus (Powerizer), Knockout, Cliffjumper, Bumblebee,Airachnid

I don't think you should include city bots or other toys where the 3rd mode is a base mode. Otherwise, I might say G1 PMOP is a better triple changer than G1 Scorponok. I also don't like G1 Astrotrain and Blitzwing sharing the same slot. It's not like they're mold mates.

Is BW optimal Optimus disqualified for having technically 4 modes despite there not being much difference between the flight mode and car mode?

And definitely missing Animated shockwave and Blitzwing.

I understand that these lists are very personal, i also get why Spinger and Sandstorm are on one spot since the molds are 90% the same, but having G1 Astrotrain and Blitzwing on one spot is pointless and defeats the purpose of a top 5, might as well make it a top 6 then.

Yeah, this list should have been thought out a little better as far as the qualifications.

But since citybots are included, not only should G1 Fortress Maximus be on the list, he should be at the top. I do agree that Generations Sandstorm and Springer should be high on the list as well.

I would've replaced Shockblast with TF:A Blitzwing. Shockblast is hampered by that unwieldy arm and weak waist. And as Rated X said, that third mode is pretty superfluous. And instead of Scorpnok, maybe Metroplx. I found him to be the best G1 cityformer.

 Starting off the list with Shockwave doing I'm a Little Teapot.
The same gun being the defining trait in each mode kinda makes them feel less distinct, too. I mean, G1 Astrotrain and Blitzwing somehow changed their primary colors around, yet Shockblast's entire upper body is virtually the same in all three of his forms...

I nominate Shuffler (elephant/tank/missile launcher!) and maybe Transquito (he's kinda crappy, but the "attack mode" is actually a whip spider, so bonus points for that)

I don't *necessarily* agree with your looser definition on triplechanger (though I'm not quite sure what *my* personal definition would be), but regardless! This surprised as an interesting list with some picks I definitely agree on and some I definitely don't. Springer and Sandstorm sweeping the floor is a given, honestly- those two are utterly masterful. Springer is pretty much the epitome of transforming figures if taken as an overall rather than individual aspects. Solid 7-8/10 in every possible category. Sandstorm is what convinced me that the retool approach was the way forwards, and is why I'll staunchly defend it.
Personally though, I'd probably bump shock last off simply due to being a bit cumbersome in all his modes- the tank mode especially is a bit daft. I'd also be inclined to knock off the G1 figures, actually :-P
In their place, Titans Return Megatron would definitely get a shot. Amazingly proportioned robot mode, two incredibly solid alt-modes, a fun but if titan master playability, and the closest we've gotten to a mtmte-styled megs yet. I'd begrudgingly concede the position to blitzwing, but personally it's megs any day, while the optimus felt borderline forced from octane, megs utterly owned that mold imo.
Also, flipping thrilled to see the love for tidal wave! He's been one of my fave figured since I was a littl'un, for both his absolute heftitude and his assorted play options. Don't forget the (admittedly ridiculous) powerlinx armour mode! I'd have gone with the hasbro armada deco, but that's just down to personal preference ;) .

I'm going to agree with the others and say Energon Shockwave just isn't a great figure. The arm is cumbersome just so they could stick some electronics in it and his satellite mod is just a series of open panels while he does an upside down one handed handstand split.

I personally would have replaced him with G1 Doubledealer. I get that technically he only has one alt mode and two bot modes, but that's really splitting hairs, he's still a character with three very distinct modes (unlike Punch/Counterpunch with two humanoid bot modes).

Neat list! Surprised at the lack of TR Blitzwing/Megatron though, from what I hear that's meant to be a good mold.

Energon Shockwave/Blast is a nice pick, though I really, really wish his waist locked in properly (and didn't break in half at the drop of a hat :( ). I personally love the satellite mode, and whilst the big electronic cannon arm is awkward, it sure looks cool. It'd be less of a pain where it not for that worthless waist.

I'd be tempted to add BW Rampage to the list- he's a decent toy, and his third mode (a giant crabby triple-barreled tank) is actually pretty awesome.

Yeah... I'ma agree that city bots shouldn't qualify. And Shockblast? Huh.
Here's my list!

Image

This guy would be much higher if it weren't for the issues with the mold. But he makes an eerily good and unique Starscream. And having one myself, I can say he has a real premium feel to him.

Image

You don't think this qualifies? Don't care. It's awesome. That is all 8-)

Image

He's G1, and in shocking simplicity pulls off 3 fantastic modes. I was almost tempted to make HIM number one.

Image

He's pretty great, and well deserving after the Generations letdown. Pulls off all modes well, but it was hard choosing between him and Megatron... :-?

Image

Legends Springer. The greatness of this mold doesn't need to be talked about any more, its well known. And while this version has a blindingly bright green, it is the most accurate scheme to date.

Hasbro made is pretty clear that these toys with base modes are now labeled as triple changers:

Image
Transformers Titans Return Powermaster Optimus Prime Gallery

Plus, they have been called triple changers since G1:

So not counting them would go against the Transformers brand and my lists are all about seeing how amazing the breadth of this brand is.

Otherwise, I might say G1 PMOP is a better triple changer than G1 Scorponok.

Thats cool! I disagree though, G1 PMOP has a good robot and alt mode but his base mode is pretty terrible.

I also don't like G1 Astrotrain and Blitzwing sharing the same slot. It's not like they're mold mates.

Your right, its not. But I couldnt place one higher than the other. They both had the same positives for me and the same negatives due to them coming from the same era. So while not the same mold, they both embody the very same type of toy and I prefered making the list more varied as opposed to having an arbitrary rank and repeat the same thing twice.

Is BW optimal Optimus disqualified for having technically 4 modes despite there not being much difference between the flight mode and car mode?

Yup, he would be disqualified due to having 4 official modes. Also, I find the car and flight mode quite different. The car mode makes use of the wheel while the flight mode has the arms stretched fowrad and makes use of that impressive winsgpan.

And definitely missing Animated shockwave and Blitzwing.

Animated Shockwave has 4 modes as well and his alt modes are pretty terrible. Blitzwing is easily one of the worst toys from the animated line due to how fiddly he is and the tank threads being so obvious under that jet. I am surprised he is getting this much love. had I known, I would have placed him in my "most overrated toys" list. I really dont like that toy.

Rodimus Prime wrote:Yeah, this list should have been thought out a little better as far as the qualifications.

I made it as simple as possible, its right there in the intro. And why would Fortress Maximus be at the top of a triple changer list when one of his three modes looks like an afterthought with nothing discernible about it?

Noideaforaname wrote::lol: Starting off the list with Shockwave doing I'm a Little Teapot.

Excellent points all around. But I like how the shape of the shockblast fundamentally changes from form to form. In robot mode, he's clearly asymetrical due to the arms. And yet in both satelite and tank mode he becomes fully symetrical. I thought that was ver witty of the designers. But yeah, the G1 toys are way better at the change, hence why they are both awesome and both placed at the number 2 spot.

Shuffler is a great nomination and something I clearly did not think about, so thanks for bringing him up!

cruizerdave wrote:Great list, but Titans Blitzwing is so much better than Titans Astrotrain. Heck, Titans Octane (Octone?) is way better than the Astrotrain.

Thanks so much for the kind words (this thanks goes out to everyone). As you can tell, this list was tough. from what to consider to what was better. Its really hard with these triple changers since one mode is always weaker than the others. TR Blitzwing and Octone are not bad by any stretch and I am glad to have them both but there is stuff that irks me about them. With Astrotrain, they went for a completely new direction so its hard to judge. I think they did very well with what they were aiming for. But with Blitzwing and Octone, they went fully G1 and it meant some sacrifices had to be made (in very different ways).

With Blitzwing, I really hate that fake chest. What bothers me even more is that the fake chest cockpit part ends up right being the actual cockpit in jet mode. It looks dumb as ****. Plus, unlike the G1 toy, you dont get the cool colour swap and the tank mode has some dumb purple on it (including the canon aaargh!). I personally feel this works better as Megatron but then that defeats the purpose of the mold (plus he has those dumb stickers, wonky QC with the threads in plane mode, half the fusion cannon miscoloured and that weird looking backpack with the canon tip).

Octone just has really bad qc. Either the wings are super loose in robot mode or the plane cockpit wont be flush (due to the thick paint). Or both. But man, if everything was tight, then for sure that would have been on the list. For now though, I actually like him better as Laser Prime and I think he is downright awesome as that, but thats because the plane mode and plane parts are completely ignored (like the wings folding in the back) which definitely defeats the purpose of him being a triple changer.

Basically, both Blitzwing and Octone (and their mold mates) dissapointed me in some level, but Astrotrain was doing his own thing and I wasnt dissapointed.

Except for the fact that Blitzwing has a bloddy Tank Turrent on his undercarriage, which even to his they can't fix. Still good list. Though I wouldn't have put TR Astrotrain, G1 Doubledealer would have been my choice.

Springer is a great toy, but I still think the chopper and car modes are too similar (Sandstorm I dislike cos of the huge kibble) and there are things that do still irk me about the robot mode (the wheels being so visible particularly on the legs... if he got a puncture he'd lose a fair chunk of his lower leg mass.

I think Titans Return Megatron has to be my fave triple changer cos he looks good in all three modes, all of which have some degree of 'realism' rather than just totally made up sci-fi modes, transforms very nicely and is a fun figure (and I haven't had ANY QC issues with mine at all, not in stickers or anything. Hell I had a bitch of a time trying to peel off the chest stickers cos I didn't want them). Yeah, Blitzwing probably nice too for personal preference but my Megatron is my definitive (for now) G1 Megatron (especially since I put that scaled down KO CW Megatron head on it for a meaner look).

TR Astrotrain doesn't work for me at all. His alt-modes just look goofy and his robot mode has always been a bit dull. Still he's better than Sentinel Prime even just for not being in an eye-burning colour scheme.

And most base modes look like absolute junk even when it's the primary alt-mode of the figure but Scorponok's always did look kinda neat in a way.

Nothing off about G1 Blitzwing's jet mode? Seriously? With all that junk under the wings? And his robot mode was always kinda crappy. :P

Energon Shockblast just looks far too messy to me. Especially that satellite mode. Me no like.
I have anxiety, depression and aspergers syndrome so my behaviour can be erratic. I don't mean offense to anyone. Just very picky about my Transformers collecting. You're all cool! :)

Likes: Bayverse, Marvel UK G1, Geoff Senior art, '86 movie (more for style/soundtrack rather than Star Wars plot)
Dislikes: Bumblebee movie (lousy rehashed dumb crud), TFA, G1 cartoon, IDW G1, BW/BM, MP. The entire concept of Autobot Megatron

I will admit even though I like him I was shocked to see Energon Shockblast :CON: on this list. Yes his satellite mode is pretty cool, but the tank just looks like the robot lying on his side.
I do agree that G1 Scorponok :CON: was a valid choice, no matter what others have said. Unlike the other city/base bots, he is a city that changes into a beast, not a battle station, but a scorpion.
But this is also why I think that G1 Doubledealer :CON: :BOT: should been on this list, if you look at the vehicle mode you would never think it could change into that hawk (it is a hawk right :???: ), yes I know it is his "Decepticon" mode, but it still is not a robot mode.
I am surprised that none of the Revenge of the Fallen Triplechangers didn't make the list, like Soundwave or Mixmaster.....I mean really :-x .........just kidding.
I guess I agree with most of the list, besides what I have already mentioned, maybe I would have had Dreadwing :G2CON: from G2 on the list, sure maybe his tank mode is not the best, but he is one AWESOMELY RAD figure, and one of my all time favorites.

tripple changers definitions are a bit weird and can be broken down into other subgroups. Would be nice to see a top 5 functional transformers list at some point (BW Neo heinland, the watch guys, perceptor are a few that come to mind)

I'm guessing my list for two alts 1 robot, no base mode would be this from fun/playability.

1.galvatron g1 (encore cartoon colours release) due to it being one of the largest tripple changers with out a base mode
2.G1 Blitzwing, its just hard to resist transforming or leaving in display in one mode for any length of time
3.Springer
4.bw tm seekers
5.ta blitzwing/tr blitzwing (only have the megatron use of the mold at the mo) both of these toys equally seem to be prone to parts falling off when transforming, if not for that, they would be higher up than springer -ta just because of the 3 faces play feature and its modes are more stand out, dominion tank police style tank to a jet and the tr being a headmaster/can have a pilot in its cockpit.

Honorable mention armada lazerbeak -yes an autobot lazerbeak should be an abomination but it works some how (and probably kept the name trademarked) and lazerbeaks robotic bird is his robot mode anyhoos.
Ehobby magnificus (perceptor) with it having a guy to ride it in tank mode.

My two robots 1 alt tripple changer list would definitely feature these guys:
g1 ultra magnus
mp rodimus prime
ta shockwave
classics punch/counter punch

TR Astrotrain is one of the best toy in the entire line, period. He's that great.

I don't agree both G1 Astrotrain and Blitzwing should be on the same spot. Because they are not repaint/remolds of one another. Beside, G1 Astrotrain is just PERFECT in every way. G1 Blitzwing is not too good. Unstability in the legs and that huge tank turret hanging off the jet's underside just look out of place.

I never really liked Generations Springer so I got rid of him. However, Generations Sandstorm is amazing. I just love all of his modes.

Finally, G1 Scorponok is one of my best Transformers purchase ever. 405$CAN was a LOT of money for a single toy, but for how perfect my 100% complete one is, that was ironically a deal. G1 Scorponok is imposing and FUN to play with. The bot mode is magnificent, the scorpion is just okay, but where he really shine is his marvelous city mode. G1 really knew how to make bases/city modes look great. Too bad none of the modern Transformers (including third party ones) can pull a half decent base/city mode.

G1 Doubledealer is one of my favorite G1 Transformers ever. However, that bird mode is far from perfect with his huge ass. Long ago I made a CUSTOM with an accidental rocking bird mode. Even though I built it, that final result was unexpected.

Forgot bout doubledealer... awesome toy. Really loved his bot and launcher mode, the bird less so but wouldn’t mind a proper update, even perhaps one where they replaced the bird mode with a plane and not a repaint of a lousy figure]
My personal prime collection so far in descending order of how great i reckon the toy is -
FE Prime, Silas Breakdown (Powerizer), Dreadwing (Powerizer), FE Bulkhead, Voyager StarScream (Powerizer), Ratchet, Soundwave, Arcee, Voyager Megatron (Powerizer), Wheeljack, Thundertron (Powerizer), Ultra Magnus (Powerizer), Knockout, Cliffjumper, Bumblebee,Airachnid
