Every so often, Kanrabat brings you a Top 5 list related to all things Transformers written by me, your fellow poster. These are my opinions (just like movie or game reviews hosted by sites are still just the opinion of one person) so what matters most is what you guys think of the topic or list, and I hope to see your own lists or comments on omissions and ranking. Let's have fun! All previous lists can be found... somewhere...

So...

TOP FIVE UNDERAPPRECIATED TRANSFORMER TOYS.

Some transformers are hated by a majority of people. many deserve the hate, but many are way better than what people think. It's a shame because these transformers get a lot of unjustified hate for no reasons. So, here are the ones that deserve more love in my humble opinion.

#5) Movie 2007 Voyager Starscream

Image

He's hated because he's not movie accurate, have horrible undercarriage, no hands, and the hand-missiles fly all over the place while transforming. However, I find the transformation pretty fun and that auto-morphing chest is pure genius. He also don't look that bad in both mode. Finally, he's my favorite custom fodder. So many victims!

#4) G1 Megatron

Image

That gun is perfect, but many just cant stand the robot mode. Sure, he look like an aborted foetus cross-mutated with a hobgoblin. However, I find that robot mode hillarious and the transformation was really brilliant and quite complex for G1. Also, dat diecast and dat hefty feeling in hand! No TF collection is complete without a G1 Megs.

#3) AoE 1st Edition Platinum Optimus Prime

Image

The fact that he's a total shellformer make it an unforgivable crime in the eyes of many. Also, that imposing backpack. True, it's a major stepback from the true MASTERPEICE that was the RotF Leader Optimus and his remold brothers. However, he is big, shiny, highly detailed, super fun to transform, and he just work. Honestly, I prefer that version over the regular leader. Blasphemous? Maybe. But I don't care. I own the Silver Knight version and it make it's own unique character and look amazing in my Baytimus display.

Image
Dust... koff koff!

Super Gobots, the "cabin heads"

Image
Image

Technically not Transformers, they kinda count because Hasbro got the rights... of the names... that are just stupid puns... Moving on, many find them completely derpy. However, I really love the fact that they are deluxe sized, most of them are accurate licensed vehicles (Including a Wolksvagen Beetle!) and the robots are charming in their retro looks. Many share similar transformations, but with subtle differences. Also, they are actually piloted mechas, with ofthen drivers molded inside the cabins! Any lovers of quirky Tfs should get at least some of these. They are cheap and easy to find.

#1) G1 Ratchet and Ironhide

Image

Urpidurderpduuuurrrr.... Look at these stupid looking bots. The vehicles are okay, but the robot modes look like a big pile of junk... So ugly that even the original cartoon redesigned them. However, like the "cabin head" Super Gobots, they have their own unique charms. The transformation is simple but clever, and it actually transform into two very... unique "military vehicles" for little humans to pilot! Make me wish I had some Diaclone human figurines to ride them. G1 Ratchet and Ironhide ARE ugly. But they are very fun and I'll keep my encore G1 Ratchet in my main display F-O-W-E-V-A-H| [-(

I don't think G1 Megatron is underappreciated. He gets love. AoE FE Prime isn't underappreciated. He's just a POS.

And speaking of POS, Gobots. All of them. >:oP

The original Movie Starscream is a pretty neat toy, only problem is the succeeding Movie Starscreams were sooooo much better. On the flip side, since Starscream's later figures are drastically different, you could get the Ramjet or Skywarp repaint of the original without feeling like you have two of the same character.

I love G1 Ironhide and Ratchet. Before the "great sale" (there was nothing great about it) - Ratchet and Ironhide were two of my favorite G1 toys, despite having almost the whole 84 - 86 run. Its a great toy, just not cartoon accurate. Which I'm cool with. Toys are toys and cartoons are cartoons.

Here is why I adore Ironhide and Ratchet.

1 - His alt-mode is close to perfect.
Image

It is fantastic. Its compact, holds all of the accessories and isn't immediately obvious how it transforms.

2 - The robot mode is neat
Image

The arms are very (for a g1) easily posed and the windshield head-cover is unique. A lot of G1 toys are awkward bricks. Ironhide isn't really any different, but gets flack because of his cartoon appearance. Yes, the elephant in the room is the lack of a proper head, but Brawn, Windcharger, Huffer and (to a lesser extent) Wheejack aren't berated for their weirdness nearly as much.

3 - The base mode is awesome
Image

Calling it a "sled" isn't doing it justice. Its like a mini version of Optimus Prime's trailer, complete with missile launcher and laser pistol. When in vehicle mode, it can store everything you removed, too. Hardly any G1 toys come with a little base or trailer and as a kid, it all adds play value.

4 - When all is said and done, Ironhide can do this
Image

He combines with his 'trailer'. I mentioned Optimus Prime before and it would take Prime another 4 years to do the same trick. Rodimus Prime himself aped the same thing, only without the stability of actually attaching to said trailer. Ultra Magnus combined with his trailer two years later, too - but all in all... Ironhide did it first. I read the comic as a kid and that first image of Ironhide in the Ark, combined to trailer (just like the box art) is what Ironhide looked like to me - the Ironhide from the cartoon was just that - a cartoon one. The toy was what I usually thought (and think) of when I think Ironhide.

TLDR - Forget the cartoon model and just enjoy the damn toy.

Exactly. For me, the most important part is the fun I have with the toy. Cartoon accuracy come dead last, unless it's the purpose of the line, like Masterpeice.

Speaking of the Super Gobots, the way CW Brawl is built, you can "mistransform" him into a bit of an homage to Mr. Turret Head there.

I'd remove the gobots, and add Energon Optimus Prime.

He's woefully underappreciated. Yes he's a little tubby. But his combination with his Prime Units is very cool. He has the better super modes with Wing Saber. Much better than either Armada Prime or Cybertron Prime's flying combinations.

And he gets 2 different options with Wing Saber to boot.

Image

And he gets Power Nike sneakers for his other combination:

Personally, if it would be Energon Optimus Prime ALONE, he's worthy of the list. However, just the fact that Wingsaber exist and is drones are good enough, this disqualify him. Seeing how much he goes on Ebay tell that enough.

BTW, I love Fatty Prime and he's at his best with Wingsaber for sure!

I think my favorite under appreciated Transformer is Generations Sky-Byte! Sure his lower legs are spindly, his "regular" forearm is impossible to position well, his feet are planks, and he's constantly looking down, but for some reason I really like him. I almost passed based on all the reviews I read but he kept going on sale so I finally got him.

I like the colors and he's got a few good poses in him. Plus he seems slightly larger/taller than a voyager for some reason. Real happy I picked him up.

ROTF Rampage. Sure he's a brick (though that can be improved with some cutting) but he looks pretty neat, especially in "crab" mode, his bulldozer mode is pretty awesome, his tread-whips are great and the jackhammer/pogo stick mode is just the funnest thing ever.

I loved that guy, he was so refreshingly different, I only wish that he looked more like his art than the figure did, I was way into the pogo snake design, wish the bulldozer wedge could've been compacted/used better :(

Energon Slugslinger isn't a great figure, but I definitely feel he's underappreciated. He's got an interesting, unique, transformation (and yes, if you do it right, he does peg together properly (at least on my particular figure, I'm sure mileage may vary, as with all Hasbro products). I also really like his face sculpt.

I actually have this exact list in the backburner, all done adn ready to go. But the reaosn I havent posted mine is because it also comes with an overrated list and I want people to undersand my biases and tastes before I release that one. And becuse I already have my list, I wont be giing it here but I feel we have a very different feeling on what it means to be udnerrated. This list described toys people do not like. That doesnt mean they are underrated but that the opnion is rather divided. At least people know of them or care whether they are in their collection or not. My number one most nderrated toy is a toy noody gives two poops about. That to me is what it really means to be udnerrated. Tobe good but have nobody caring and rather looking past.

Rodimus Prime wrote:I don't think G1 Megatron is underappreciated. He gets love. AoE FE Prime isn't underappreciated. He's just a POS.

That is my opinion too. G1 Megatron is legendary and hailed as one of the best Megatron toys. He is on the upcoming best megatron toy lists and is the only G1 toy to not be inferior to his MP version. That means a lot.

And AOE FE Prime can be found on my lists too

That combo is amazing. Its cool how two underwhelming toys combine to make one of the best toys of the line. I mean he actually gains articulation by being combined, thats incredible!

I love that toy too, I have the takara version which highlights the amazing chest transformation. I truly believe that if he was released in Takara's colours, he wuld have been a must have that year in the west.

Its imressive that he tabs in well since I have tried to achieve that on mine to no avail. However, it is his odd forearms that I dislike the most. It is so weird how there are these big protruding areas on them that look more suited to be in the back of his arms. They look like they are on backwards but his thumb and fist says otherwise. I do think it is a cool toy though and I dont feel he is too underappreciated since he was used to make Botcon 2006 Airrazor, and that is the most hailed botcon set of all time.
