Top Ten G1 Figures

So I mostly collect the classics and masterpiece lines, but have only found very few G1's that I actually want due to my dislike of brick-type figures with little articulation and/or lack of resemblance to the cartoon character(I have ruled out getting op/megs/seekers/most of the cars, etc.), I have acquired G1 Jetfire and Shockwave and am quite pleased with them despite the lack of articulation as I feel the figures are great representations of the characters(aside from the obvious difference between the cartoon and toy versions of Jetfire's head/face), with that stated, what are the ten best G1 molds/figures using this criteria, in your opinion?

Yeah Perceptor is definitely a nice G1 bot, almost bought him a few months back but he was missing everything, but he is on my radar :)

In no particular order

1) Galvatron
2) Optimus Prime
3) Soundwave
4) PM Optimus Prime (die cast reissue especially)
5) Ultra Magnus
6) K-Mart Legends Bumble Bee
7) Blaster?
8) Grimlock
9) Perceptor
10) Shockwave

Keep in mind I have never owned a Metroplex, Jetfire nor an Omega Supreme whom I think would be awesome figures.

Weapon: Blunt Force Battle Clubs
Sensing your dislike of G1 Bricks, my recommendations would be (in no particular order)

1. Soundwave
2. Jetfire
3. Any of the Dinobots especially Grimlock
4. Shockwave
5. Bruticus
6. Skylinx
7. Blitzwing
And on the more expensive side
8. Devastator
9. Mirage
10. Predaking

Keep in mind- it wont be possible to escape the toy being a brick in some way, but these have aesthetics that can soften it a bit and in the case of the combiners, offer many more points of articulation for less of a ramrod straight look.
Grimlock know how to bash brains. Maybe bash yours.

In no particular order:

Fortress Maximus (maybe brick, but that likeness is accurate to both comic and cartoon versions)
Shockwave
Jetfire
Grimlock (as well as the other Dinobots)
Devastator
Perceptor
Sixshot
Dreadwing (Darkwing and Dreadwind)
Soundwave (and any of his cassettes)
Hot Rod

I dont own much G1 but here's my own criteria for if they are good or not.

Cartoon accuracy is just a BONUS. The TOYS CAME FIRST. So, the real deal here is are they GOOD LOOKING in all their modes and are they FUN to transform and play with?

So, here's my list based on what I own:

#1: G1 Optimus Prime. That thing is just perfect in every ways. Even by today's standard!

#2: God Ginrai, AKA Powermaster Optimus Prime with Apex Armor. Sure, this is a partformer but there's so much you can do with him!

#3: Soundwave and his cassettes minions. Awesome in every ways and plenty of playability.

#4: Six Shot. As I found out recently, Six Shot is one amazing dude. So much possibilities in a mold that is so simple.

#5: Shockwave. Ginormous bot, ginormous gun, ginormous fun.

The following are Gobots. Because for many years, Gobots are part of the Transformers family. They are also vintage from before 1985. You cannot get more G1 than that.

#6: Puzzler. Six matchbox cars that are real looking, transform into individual bots AND combine into a titan without the need of extra parts. That's masterful engeneering right there.

#7: SGB Spay-C. A kibble-free space shuttle that have a unique and clever transformation. The guy could have found himself at home in the TF Armada line with his very "modern" design. A backpack, arms-panels, and an overall kick-ass robot mode.

#8: SGB Cy-Kill. The super Gobot version of Cy-Kill is not only surprisignly well articulated, but it have no dtachable parts at all, rotating all the kibble on the back in a clever way. Also, he have a "good guy" face!

#9: Tux. A Rolls Royce that change into a classy bot with a top hat. Now that's PIMP!

#10: All the "cabin headed" Super Gobots. I just love their perfectly accurate and kibble free vehicle modes and their retro robot look.

So, that's it. If you love good old bots, try adding these to your collection.

Gotta agree with the Gobots reference. Puzzler is one topnotch "combiner". imagine if Menasor was made of die-cast and rubber tires instead of just ABS/PVCs

Super Cykill too is one heavy and nice looking hombre! I managed to purchase on from a vendor from Dubai.....sh#tty box but MISB! They sure don't make toys like they used to back in the 80s. He's like 80% die-cast!

I noticed a trend among our favorite top 10 figs. Most if not all were designed by either Shoji Kawamori or Shinji Aramaki. Goes to show their genius/wizardry in engineering transcends time itself.

GET SOME SUPER GOBOTS!

For two main reasons: They're awesome, but most importantly, VERY CHEAP for vintage toys. Try a random Cabin Head (get Baron Von Joy!) and Super Cy-Kill just to get a feel. No matter if you like them or not, your budjet will sure not suffer because ot it.

Kanrabat, I appreciate the enthusiasm for the Super Go-Bots! However, the Go-bots just wouldn't feel "right" for me, which is the best way I could put it, I'm very OCD with what I collect and while I appreciate the aesthetic(I dig the look of the "cabin head" Gobots especially), they would drive me a little nuts, categorically speaking

Blaster's another one you should consider, nice solid alt mode and the bugger's huge! It's really difficult to get a top 10 with G1 and your criteria, cars like Sideswipe/Alert and the Bluestreak molds are fantastic interpretations IMO
Breakdown 2099

Re: Top Ten G1 Figures

10: Laserbeak/Buzzsaw: Easily my favorite of the cassette molds. Fun to transform, colors well too.

9: Perceptor: Nice gimmick. He lenses work like a real microscope and ahs some slight degree of complicaiton to his transformation.

8: Predaking: Only Razorclaw had a decent robot mode while the others looke dlike they had been put througha mahcie that stretched them out. But combined, Predaking is easily the largest combiner, being a G1 original as opposed to the other combiners. he had a few degrees more of posability compared to the tohers too, making him perhaps the most meacing of the combiner toys.

7: Sludge: This one is one of my fav TF's to transform. Not sure why but his robot mode is one of the few TF's to have a clsoe likeness to his cartoon counterpart, minus the head.

6: Grimlock: Perhas the most acurate transformation as seen in the show and has a storng likeness in appearanc eot his counterpart. On top of that, he turns into a fricken T-Rex.

5: Prowl/Bluestrek/Smokescreen: This mold is perhaps the most under-rated of the early G1 line as each character sported an uncanny resemblance to his Cartoon coutner-part. It's transformation was also acurate to the cartoon and fun.

4: Metroplex: What some could consider Fort Max Mk.1 Unlike most TF's he has greater degrees of articulaiton that were absent in most TFs, particularly in the legs as it was necessary for part of his transformaiton. He's essentually a giant-sized triplechanger that not only turns into a baltle platform, but also a city for use by the smaller TFs. In addition, a diaclone feature that carried over allows various combiner components to serve as add-ons to the figure in city mode.

3: Powermaster Optimus Prime w/Apex Armor/God Ginrai: Starting wiht the PM Pime figure, you get the main cab, a Power master minifig named Hi-Q in America or Ginrai in Japan, which combines to the cab to allow transformation of the main cab, then a trailer which turns into a small Powermaster base. Then you can combine the trailer and cab to create Power Master Optimus Prime/Super Ginrai. Then you add in the Apex Bomber figure/God Bomber and it becomes additonal armor , making him God Ginrai, one of the tallest TFs of the enitre G1 line, rivaling some of the later larger figures released.

2: Soundwave: One of the earliest TF's in G1 but had one of the ebst gmmiks of his time and an classic voice to acompany his cartoon counterpart. I've heard in some cases he could work as a real walkman during the Mircoman line, but I could be wrong. On top of that, he always came with an extra robot, namely Buzzsaw.

1: Fortress Maximus: Let's look at the qualifications: First pff, he's huge. No TF to date has equaled him in height or size witht he closest being Armada/Energon Unicron, he has three distinctive forms, features a few characters in his assortment (Spike Whitwicky, Cerebros, Gasket, Grommet, and Fort Max hismelf), has some degress of articulation, has an observation ot on his shoudler, his head becomes ana ttachment to his city form, can carry a host of smaller transformers, and then there's the guns, This guy comes so loaded to bear that even Megatron would order a retreat at the first sign of Fort Max's arrival.

It may be so... for now...
You are just begining collecting, I guess. At the start, many try to be reasonable and collect just ONE thing. But it will not last.

At first, I just wanted to collect every Optimus Primes ever. Then, I remembered how much I liked Starscream and I said to myself that I will get every Optimus Primes AND every Starscreams ONLY.

Then, one day, just a few months after I started, I went to Walmart and I went to the toy section, just in case.
:HALUC: "NO, I WILL COLLECT ONLY OPTIMUS AND SCREAMER! I WILL... I W...ill....... aw, screw it...." :HALUC:
I left the store with Generations Drift and Terradive.

Next thing you know...

Not only this is an old photo, not the entire collection is shown. Just roughly half.

Will you really stay faitful to your original collecting plans? Considering all the awesome there is, no matter the line?

I have possibly a weird top ten, meself. I should note that these are NOT in order, as if I tried to put them in order I'd be switching this list around for hours:

Defensor: While the individual bots may be awkward or horribly out of scale with each other, the combined gestalt mode is my favorite of the Scramble City combiners.

Beachcomber: Always was my favorite of the Minibots, from both its proportions, and how close to the actual figure the cartoon representation got.

Mirage: Again, it's the proportions to this figure I found so awesome. Unlike many of the earlier TF's, he had relatively heroic proportions, and looked remarkably like his cartoon representation.

Roadbuster: I may have never had the actual figure for this character, but I had the cheapo Convertor version. I just love the overall mechanical design here, and the vehicle mode looks far more like a "future Earth mode" than any of the 1986 movie figures.

Shockwave: His 'cousin', Shackwave, is actually the first Transforming robot I remember seeing, and I still regret never getting either Shacky or Shocky.

Blaster: Yes, he's a radio. Yes, he's a brick. But he looks more like a robot than many other G1's, several of whom look like a car standing up or the like. That and nostalgia put him on this list.

Soundwave: They shoulda kept the original plan, and made HIM the Decepticon leader. 'Nuff said.

Jazz: As with Mirage, I always thought Jazz had the best looking robot mode of the Autobot Cars. But more, I found the character simply awesome - just as obsessed with Earth popular culture as Blaster, but not as obnoxious about it, and simply one cool bot.

Jetfire: As a kid, I wasn't just a TF fan, but also a Robotech fan. This toy combined both for me in one superawesome package - with more articulation than 99% of G1!

Misfire: Yeah, I know, most of you are saying "What the slag?" or more likely replacing 'slag' with an English explitive. To put it simply, his jet mode is really cool, and his bot mode not only has exceptionally good proportions for the time, but also exceptional articulation for the time, a time when articulation was actually getting worse, not better. And I keep missing Ebay sale after Ebay sale of complete Misfire + Aimless, which means he's become my personal Grail.

Well, that's it for me.

These are just the toys I've actually owned (in no order)...

-Scorponok
-Soundwave
-Grimlock
-Sludge
-Galvatron (Might just be the most highly articulated G1 TF, though colors aren't toon accurate, they were based on an early animation model)
-Whirl (Too bad he never made it to the toon)
-Sharkticon (Man, do I miss this guy! Perhaps the most toon accurate G1 bot)
-Shockwave (Near perfection)
-Megatron (Not toon accurate, but lots of articulation)
-Trypticon (You can move his head all around, open his mouth, and he walks and moves his arms on his own - what more do you want?!)
