K-9 is a redeco and retool of Wolfang. Beast Mode and detachable shield have different engineering.

You're both wrong, the two figures share no parts in common, they only share transformation. ;)

I found an original at a thrift store a few years ago. While it was missing the Cyber Bee, everything else felt solid and still does. What was the issue some people had?

In my case it's the hip ball joint popping off constantly. I think everyone has issues with the bee not playing nice, either the wings pop open for no reason or it just outright launches on its own. Really hope they fixed the tolerances there.

Totally over the moon about this news! I never got to own Scorponok, S1 Tarantulas or Cybershark as a kid. And while I’ve rebuilt my BW collection from the ground up, I never got around to pulling the trigger on those three, or Terrorsaur because of how much they go for (complete) on eBay. This is definitely awesome news to hear! Few steps closer to completing my BW collection.

Now I just have to make some more space…

Three of us, then? :P

Plus, as I have the figures in front of me, I specifically noted different engineering. I didn't mention anything else. There is a Wolfang mold (Wolfang & Red Wolfang) and a K-9 mold (K-9 & Max-B).

The definition of a retool is to literally take existing tooling and changing it so by definition it does not need to share parts, it just needs some parts to be based on others, which is the case here. Hence TF Wiki's accurate use of an extensive retooling since almost all the pieces of one mold were retooled into different ones.

I bought K-9 back in the day. Originally I never found Wolfang for sale anywhere. In the last few years I decided to collect and complete the mold. It was the first time I had him in hand. I was surprised by the size difference between them. Considering neither ever got into the show, they really put a lot of work into the figures.

That's because Wolfang was supposed to be a show character instead of Tigatron.

Nut then again, they put a ton of work into a bunch of these toys.

I always thought it was supposed to be Polar Claw that appeared in the show, then they made a late decision to switch to Tigatron ? (easier to adapt Cheetor CG Model to another, slightly larger Cat, with just a few changes, as opposed to a whole new model), but they BOTH had the whole snow environment going etc. Also why they changed Tigatron's toy from Orange (production photos) to white (final product).

(*Yes I know IRL it is a misnomer that ALL White Tigers live in Siberia, or snowy environments. It is a recessive gene that can appear in any of the different Tiger Breeds)

TFwiki says it was supposed to be wolfang

The show was originally leading with Wolfang. From the perspective of the toyline marketing, Polar Claw could be implied. The dialogue spoken by Tigatron in Fallen Comrades could have been applied to all three. The isolationism of Polar Bears. The pack mentality of Wolves etc etc

The budget was the deciding factor. Leading us to forever muse over how cool Polarhawk or Wolfhawk could have been.

william-james88 wrote:That's because Wolfang was supposed to be a show character instead of Tigatron.

Indeed. But at the same time. For them to make a completely separate figure to Wolfang, based on upscaled engineering, in K-9. That's a level of work for a non-show character you don't really see anymore. As you say, there are a ton of examples of figures the designers went out of their way to look fantastic (The Transmetal 2 line, in particular).

I'll always consider Silverbolt a dog, not a wolf. Semantics perhaps. But as I loathe Silverbolt, meanwhile adore Wolfang. I choose to make the distinction.

That said, I think the most visually striking design would have been Polarhawk.

Indeed. It is part of the reason, when I adapted Wolfang into my own writing. A German accent seemed fitting.

The K9 and Cybershark reissues are pleasant surprises that I would pick up, would be neat to have them. and Cybershark is now the only version of that mold I don't have I believe, and with regards to the doggie bot skeleton, only the Predacon Wolfang would be missing to complete that set.

Also really surprised by scorponok, will wait to see what becomes of that

I'm not shooting to complete the mold, it was more just an observation. I found an incomplete Wolfang in a $0.25 bin and found all the pieces to complete him, and I bought the Max-B retool to work towards complete a BWII cast (still need Thrustor, but I think he is all I need to finish the BWII Preds along with the Autorollers). So the completionism of the mold is quite incidental.

Same thing happened with the Cybershark mold. I got Sharpedge really cheap to complete the BWN cast, and I got the Cyborg Hellscream at the same time as Max-B and Dirgegun. Just sort of happy accidents that I am as far as I am

I get that. The same incidental thing happened to me. When I ended up collecting the Car Robots Predacons, purely through picking up redecos of figures I already had.

For Brits, K9 would probably sound like this:

Whereas for some Americans, be might elicit Jim Bulushi's voice:

So I finally saw Cheetor and Rattrap at walmart today. I had no intention of getting them, but it was just nice to see something, anything *new*.

Having seen them in person now, I have to ask, (Seinfeld voice) What's the deal with the overly large cards? (end Seinfeld voice).

I mean I've seen them on Toybiz reproductions of Marvel action figures, and the rerelease of The Real Ghostbusters vintage figures as well (not sure who makes those), and now BW. Also, while MOTU Origins gets it right on most of its action figures, I see battle-Armor He-Man & Skeletor have the overly large ones, and I can't for the life of me understand why. I mean if companies are trying to be environmentally friendly, one would think going with the original (smaller) cardback size would be best, and probably more aesthetically pleasing to adult collectors who want these.

I mean I know the reissues of Original Transformers figures at Walmart didn't mimic the OG packaging look 100%, but they got closer than I've seen on most other reissue lines. (With the exception of Prime without his trailer which wasn't a thing in 84-86)
