I don't know how or what I did differently from all the advice given here or from all the usual tricks to get that any version of mold's doors to close, but the doors on my Toxitron (which is currently back in his box) are closed.

My intention with the bio was to take most of Starscream's defining qualities and flip them 180 degrees in a manner of speaking. So instead of thinking himself as the most handsome, he is the most handsome but doesn't feel that way. Instead of wanting to replace Megatron, he is a very capable leader himself but feels Megatron is more suited, etc. Even things like his weaknesses, which got cut for room, were the opposite of Starscream's. :D

I'm surprised that the quote wasn't a similar flip, honestly. You'd think with the reversal theme going it'd be something like "Those who seek conquest will find only ashes."

Sabrblade wrote:Pete Sinclair has chimed in on the choosing of SG Starscream:
So, it bears repeating, we will be explaining why it was SG Starscream and not say SG Double Pretender Optimus Prime at Pete's Robot Convention. Don't want to give too much away, but had the TFSS continued it would not have been SG Starscream. Looking forward to sharing the story at the panel!

Now that the convention's come and gone (I'm pretty sure), did he share this?

I plan to make a more formal report on the con later, but here's what happened with SG Starscream from what all I can remember from the panel.

Basically, the original plan for the 7th figure was for it to be CW G1 Sunstorm from the Unite Warriors Starscream figure. At the time that that was planned, it was not yet known that that was going to be the absolute final Fun Pub Transformers figure. By the time that was found out, Pete and friends tried to get Hasbro to let them change the mold out for something else so that Fun Pub could create a much better figure for the conclusion of their tenure with the Transformers license, a figure that would better serve to represent Fun Pub's tenure. Specifically, that "something else" that Pete wanted Hasbro to let them switch out the Starscream mold was the Generations Springer mold to create one of Pete's two biggest unproduced figure regrets: Shattered Glass Rodimus Prime.

Unfortunately, Hasbro said no to that request because they said that the request came too late for any molds to be switched out. The Starscream mold was set in stone at that point. So, Fun Pub tried to see if they could move around some of the set molds and change one of them into being the the special final Fun Pub figure. Once such attempt was to move Counterpunch around and have Optimus be the special last figure. Not simply as he ended up being, but to keep the Pretender shell as is and instead have the inner Optimus figure be Shattered Glass Optimus. But that wasn't doable so late in the game either.

Therefore, they were stuck with having the Starscream mold at the end as the final Fun Pub figure, so they had no choice but to try and do something uniquely Fun Pub-ish with it. After much brainstorming, t hey decided to turn it into a new SG Starscream, one who exists not in the main Marvel G1 comic-based SG universe that we've had since 2008, but in a new Sunbow G1 cartoon-based SG universe, which was first glimpsed at in the bonus two-page Transformers comic that was included in the back of the Diamond Edition of the G.I.JoeCon 2016 comic book.

Though, the way Fun Pub pulled off turning Sunstorm into SG Starscream was not as direct as simply asking Hasbro to let them change the former into the latter, but rather Fun Pub simply asked Hasbro if there could be "a few color changes made to that mold's deco". Hasbro never got back to them about that, so since Hasbro technically didn't say "No" that time and didn't make a fuss over it afterward, Fun Pub took the initiative and were able to successfully get the overseas production to color the figure as SG Starscream, to celebrate the end of the Fun Pub Transformers era.

Cheers for the info, much appreciated.

I'm no fan of SG as a concept, but that Starscream's colour scheme is gorgeous, so I'm glad we got him rather than Sunstorm.

I heard elsewhere that there was supposedly a specific reason why both Starscream and the Botcon Ratchet ended up with transparent hand/foot guns, but the original intention fell by the wayside when the character was changed late in the day. Any idea what that was?

Nothing was mentioned about the HFGs at the con, but now knowing about how the SG Starscream figure came about, I can deduce that, since the original plan was to do Sunstorm, the clear red HFG was to have been for Sunstorm's "Shining Fist" (from Randy's original G Gundam reference to the Shining Finger of that series). Because Sunstorm was to have a clear HFG, that must have led to Ratchet having one too, so as to make the two sort of hot-cold/harm-heal counterparts. But when Sunstorm was changed to SG Starscream, the clear red fist was kept for him since one of the custom class options for Ratchet (who was also keeping his own clear HFG) was SG Ratchet, resulting in a pattern of both SG dudes having clear HFGs.

Considering all that, and based on the fact that I'm probably the only one who actually still likes DW Transformers series, (and I enjoy G Gundam) I wish we would have got Sunstorm. But then again it would have been difficult to make the heroic combiner Modulus.
Bucket/Want List: Botcon 2016 Customization Class Ratchet (G2 Deco), or Customization Class Ratchet (Marvel Comics Deco) **would also be willing to pay for an Unpainted Botcon 2016 Ratchet, TT Legends Fortress Head (only) with working Electronics

As someone who despised Dreamwave G1 for the most part, I would've loved Sunstorm as Volume 3 was easily the best part of their G1 ongoing, had some decent characterisation and Sunstorm made a great new villain. There's a reason he and The Fallen have since entered into general Transformers lore.

Still, Fun Pub did give us a pretty good Sunstorm back in 2013.

And a slightly different but still similar G Gundam reference was slipped into SG Starscream's bio. ;)

I suppose. The plans for TFSS 5.0 were made at the same time as the plans for the 4.0 (all the way back in... March 2015, I think?), so the Starscream mold would have been set on stone well in advance of Fun Pub's learning about their losing the Transformers license.

JelZe GoldRabbit wrote:but those concepts can still be used in the future, right?
By Hasbro, Takara, e-HOBBY, or another other official venue, yes, but only if any of them choose to do so.

Of course, any skilled/ambitious enough fan customizer may also attempt to make their own. ;)

This is awesome.

I really wanted a Unite Warriors Ratchet to complete my all-white Combiner (Battle Core Optimus Prime, Prowl, Streetwise, First Aid, Rook). Wanted First Aid and Ratchet the mold for the legs would match.

My two-year old son would flip at the thought of a Rescue Bot combiner.

I think this is because they don't want to discount the items to finish selling off their stock to club members. I look at the store fairly often for new discounts cause there are items I'd like but not willing to pay some of those prices for.

Not to mention the sale ends today, then they go back to their normal ridiculously high prices.

If they're no longer official product, shouldn't the galleries of those items be moved to 3rd party or removed? Also, shouldn't you stop reporting when they make an announcement about toys they were going to release?

There's some stuff on clearance. It's still more than retail prices, but depending on how much you want the figure it can be a bargain.

The have the 2015 BotCon Exclusive Waruders (4 pack) at $43.94 which is pretty much a steal (not counting shipping of course)

I would think the product remains official since it was created under the license, just the company selling them is no longer official.

The have the 2015 BotCon Exclusive Waruders (4 pack) at $43.94 which is pretty much a steal (not counting shipping of course)

Wouldn't that be less than retail? $11 for a deluxe with a minicon, maybe a deluxe on clearance. Versus buying it on it BBTS for $160. Same with the two botcon sets, much less than you could find them on other sites and eBay.

I want the combiner to finally get clearanced...
