Oops. Bandai paid off the photographer. ;)

I wonder, do comic fans complain about getting the same comic characters over and over again like Transformers fans do? "JLU again?" "More Avengers?" I feel like I don't hear these things nearly as much as Transformers fans say, "G1 again?"

It's more or less because before 2007, Transformers was always re-inventing the wheel. Rather than a handful of iconic characters like Optimus and Starscream, each new iteration of Transformers would have a completely new slew of characters. The 2007 Movie - ironically - changed that, and then we got Animated and TFP going primarily for G1 re-inventions rather than the more original casts we had in, say, Cybertron and Beast Wars.

Context matters -- unlike Marvel or DC or a lot of other things, it's simply always been in this franchise's nature for a new series to not be a re-invention of a previous one and instead go for something new, and most especially now there are older fans who grew up with Armada or Beast Wars who yearn for and have nostalgia for those and not G1. So it's a bit maddening to see G1 paid homage to again in place of something new, especially when fans of G1 have a huge amount of options these days.

DC fans will always have known and grown up with the like of Supergirl, Aquaman and Raven. Depending on their era, Transformers fans will have grown up with Sunstreaker, Ravage and Dirge; some will have grown up with Rattrap, Terrorsaur and Airazor; and some will have grown up with Hot Shot, Tidal Wave and Sideways.

I wouldn't mind a happy medium - base it in a G1-esque universe but do like IDW and use whoever you please from whatever continuity.

And make a new character or two. Or twelve. Get creative.

Though maybe the actual ideal is to just rip off the recent Bandai/Sunrise strategy with Gundam and run completely new stuff (IBO) alongside blatant but pretty original series fanwank (Unicorn somewhat, Thunderbolt, Twilight Axis), while saving the "universe" wackiness for a downright awesome web series (Build Fighters)

First off, as you all know I really don't like the fan made term that is often used to describe the Original Series. Star Trek fans do no refer to the original series as G1, and neither do I for Transformers.

All semantics aside, a proper retelling or continuation of the original series has never been done. Sure the Prime Wars Trilogy toys are great, but you still have two and sometimes three other toy lines going along with it, so there is no lack of originality there.

To me IDW comics is NOT the Original Series, especially now that you have characters from all different continuities coming in at random, for no apparent reason, its this multi-universal singularity mess that...just is what it is.

and Machinima was DEFINITLY not the Original Series...it was just something I'd rather forget...

Now I do realize that Cyberverse wont be TOS either, but it may be the closest thing to it since the original, which gives me hope. Its just that with a new production company, there is a bit of hesitation on my part as to what the quality of it will be. Also when I speak of the original continuity, I include Beast Wars, and (lamentably) Beast Machines as well, as through writing, they have been tied in directly to the original Sunbow animated series.

Now like others have stated, I would actually prefer something set in that original universe (which we've never had before). Gundam does it in Japan. From time to time, after making several series set in other original settings, they will return to the UC. Hasbro has never done this for Transformers, which is a shame, but I figure Cyberverse may be the closest thing we ever get to that, so I just hope its good.

Funny I posted my last comment before reading yours. Yes Gundam does it right by providing original content and going back to the UC well. Btw...you may call Unicorn *fan wank*, but it was the best darn thing Gundam has put out in well over a decade. ;)

Shadow Chronicles was awesome, too bad Harmony Gold is such a hack of a company. It took them 20+ years to get that produced, then a few years later they try to pawn off a Yellow Dancer/Lancer film from Mosepaeda as an "all new original movie" that they had nothing to do with...Shadow Chronicles was the only new/original thing they ever did, and unfortunately they are too busy losing money, and looking for frivolous lawsuits against Hasbro and every other toy company that thinks they are infringing upon their IP. If you aren't going to do anything with ROBOTECH...then just let it go...there are plenty of Western fans that want to see Macross 7, Frontier etc... and they are impeding this..

Sorry...rant over...

TF Cyberverse...cant wait to hear more about it.

The less humans the better imho. I watch Transformers for the bots. I can watch pretty much any other series for humans. If there were not many humans in the background during Prime I guess I never noticed. It is nice when shows include details in the background but I think TFP was over budget anyway.

Transformers takes place on Earth there's supposed to be humans living there, but it seems like humanity abandoned Earth in the show like for damns sake the only reason people don't really like the humans is that they are usually not written that well which makes them unlikable but there have been great humans in our franchise... hell some of my fave characters are the rescue bot human family since their really likable and are decently written, transformers would be a hell less entertaining if they did not change into human vehicles which is probably why the show and the toys back in 1984 became so popular.

Thanks for bringing up one of the couple "hilarious" moments in the show by hilarious I mean cringy poorly made "jokes" and reminds me about how Starscream was the worse character on the show since he was treated as a joke after season 1...how the hell did he become second in command in the first place?

Of course my opinion about Tf:P is my opinion but the only time I was humored and laughed in the whole show was the time Jack asked Prime if he wanted to see something funny...the joke was funny but it shows why that Optimus is the worse Optimus there ever was which reminds me that I really hope Optimus is actually charismatic in this show instead of a boring, bland, speech spewing machine.

Anyways, more G1 crap? Sounds refreshing. I mean, if the writing is good I won't complain, but I think it's about time a Transformers series actually put completely unique, well-thought out concepts into its stories instead of mashing up old ones. Animated did this, Prime did this, closest we got to a unique Transformers show is Beast Wars/Beast Machines and even those had their laundry list of flaws. I think my taste for stories is just getting too high. Probably a good thing, too. Made me realize what terrible writing was present in the likes of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and Doctor Who.

Personally, I find "boring and bland" personalities are better leaders. It's really dangerous to ask for a lot more charisma for the leader character in an action/adventure cartoon/animated series. If I may compare to another of my favorite franchises, Digimon, it is common to make leaders like Tai, Davis, and Marcus. Annoying, obnoxious, and arrogant. No. Thanks. If they can walk the line more toward a Takato or Mikey(Taiki) - they were actually good, likable, leaders. (Although, I think Henry would have made a much better leader than Takato, personally.)

But, again. I loved TFP. Humans were poorly written... Well, Miko was, anyways... And Raf was a cliche.

Except for when its on Cybertron...or a host of other alien worlds. I mean only about 15% of TF:TM takes place on Earth, in a conveniently, remotely located Autobot City, where you don't need humans, but the minimum portrayal of humans in TF:TM is one of the many aspects that makes it arguably one of the greatest single Transformers stories ever. TFP- Rise of The Predacons is also a personal favorite of mine...No Humans. Heck even BWII The Movie which most western fans haven't even seen gets high marks from me for having zero humans. I find it highly entertaining.

I'm not saying I hate all human characters in TF lore, its just that they are way overused in some series, and history has shown, for me at least, -the fewer, the better.

Sorry about the opinion thing I'm not trying to make people have mine (I have no qualms about stating my opinion on things though) but still doesn't change on how disappointed I felt when I watched Prime as it aired in it's life time since I thought it was going to get better and more grand in scale.

Anyone watche the cgi Clone wars show? I hoped that Prime would be at least half as good...and I'm hoping the new show will have decent writing but I'm expecting it to be cheap effortless pandering to some Adults from the 80's who really should lighten up and move on and not waste their times fuming and whinning for a perfect show. (The perfect Transformers show will never exist it's impossible all we can get is a good show)

Yeah when their on Cybertron whatever I get that but when the show's setting is on Earth? There is no excusable reason for humans not to get involved and heck I'm surprised that the government in Prime was so chill with the Autobots being there and how the military almost never gets involved when they should...although it was repeated and not properly executed I like how realistic the live actions have the government be the overly paranoid people they should be regarding aliens regardless of what side their on.

Best character in Transformers Prime was Agent Fowler who is a human and I should note that I forgot how many times he made me laugh a lot too so there is that.

Being a g1 fan and not a huge fan of the movies.. I've lapped up most g1 related stuff including generations figures and the prime series. TFA was most fun when they had heavy g1 influenced moments or characters.

Think prime was the best overall series followed closely by beast wars. The g1 cartoon started it all but obviously it was what it was... I'd love an updated g1 experience... the recent video games were pretty good at establishing lore. It was the tf devastation game that really made me want a proper g1 cartoon rehash.

So I am curious about cyberverse, but don't have high hopes re quality etc but you never know.
My personal prime collection so far in descending order of how great i reckon the toy is -
FE Prime, Silas Breakdown (Powerizer), Dreadwing (Powerizer), FE Bulkhead, Voyager StarScream (Powerizer), Ratchet, Soundwave, Arcee, Voyager Megatron (Powerizer), Wheeljack, Thundertron (Powerizer), Ultra Magnus (Powerizer), Knockout, Cliffjumper, Bumblebee,Airachnid

In addition to what Kurona said right after you posted that, comic fans can choose from different books with plenty of options for superheroes. If you get bored with the Avengers, you can hop over to JLU or X-Men
or Teen Titans or Fantastic Four or Shazam or Spider-Man or Booster friggin' Gold for all I care, any number of things. For transforming robots, the field is significantly more limited, and Transformers is really the game in town.

Transformers has always been more of a team thing with loads of characters ...otherwise people would be less upset by Bumblebee.

Yes. Now go to your room and don't play with yourself.

You know, as someone who grew up on G1 there was a time when even I was starting to get tired of the constant stream of G1 stuff.

Then I read this thread.

Now all I have to say is, suck it G1 haters.

But, speaking of Wheeljack I really hope we get to see him in this show. Its been too long. Part of me wants to try to search out what characters will show up, part of me wants to be surprised. Though being news staff I sometimes get spoiled on things anyway.

I hope we get varied vehicle modes on both sides.

I want cars, trucks, vans, planes, helicopters, military vehicles, tanks and kinda out there but I would not mind water vehicles either as long as they had a way to function on land (besdies robot mode) maybe M.A.R.B.S?

I would like characters both old and new and maybe some that have been sideline and/or are obscure for example Windcharger is a good character in concept that really has not been utilized well even just the magnet powers but he has a speed weakness as well.

What would really be cool is if they used some alt modes that haven't been done much or done at all before. The one vehicle mode that, to me, seems most overdue is a steamroller, which they've only done as a Japanese-exclusive Playskool Go-Bot and a PCC limb.

But it's a G1 rehash, so I'm pretty sure it'll mostly be the same alt-modes except for a few that need to be changed, like Megatron (can't sell toy guns any more) and Soundwave (nobody uses tape players any more).
