Transformers fought MPAA

Postby Wheeljack35 » Thu Mar 22, 2007 12:25 pm

SciFi Wire

Shia LaBeouf, who stars in Michael Bay's upcoming Transformers movie, told SCI FI Wire that executive producer Steven Spielberg had to appeal a decision by the Motion Picture Association of America to give the film a dreaded R rating. "Spielberg fought back and got the PG-13," LaBeouf said in an interview. "It's just because of the intensity. There are not a lot of breathers. It's like whoosh!"

It's not clear if Bay, the action director known for such adrenalin-pumping movies as Armageddon and The Island, cut anything to get the lower rating. LaBeouf said that an early cut of the film earned an R rating simply because it was so suspenseful. "We went to get our MPAA rating, and this movie is for the masses, and we got an R rating because of the tension," LaBeouf said. He added: "Not because of the curse words or nudity, but for sheer intensity. It's aneurysm-inducing."

LaBeouf stars alongside Jon Voight, Anthony Anderson, Josh Duhamel and John Turturro in the movie, a live-action update of the 1980s toy, TV and comic franchise, about warring alien robots who bring their battle to Earth. (LaBeouf talked about Transformers at a screening and party at Sony last week for his upcoming animated penguin surfer movie, Surf's Up.)

LaBeouf said that Transformers' computer graphics are out of this world. "No one has ever seen animation like this," he said, adding that the technical people at the visual-effects company Industrial Light & Magic were astounded about the amount of CG they had to do. "The people at ILM said this is the most intense graphics in the history of the company," he said. "Everyone says they did some pretty magical and wild things. Just Megatron's arm has 15,000 moving pieces that all converge like [a] Rubik's Cube. And add to that Michael Bay's chase scenes? And then you have two 40-foot machines on the 405 [freeway] boxing. It's nuts! It's never been done like that. It will be fun to see what happens." Transformers opens July 4.

Waits for the first person to make fun of Shia for relating Meg's arm to a Rubik's Cube. :-?

anyone else get the feeling that this moron only gets interviewed because he makes himself looks so rediculous every time?

He always makes **** up, in every single one of these, over emphasizes something, and another thing, apparently he didn't know that movies only get rated on content, what kind of excuse is it "got an R rating because of suspense"??? what a lying sack of crap.

I think he's got some potential to his acting, but my god, every time I see an interview with him, I hate him alittle bit more and more.

A bunch of dudes on the internet could come up with stuff that's more credible than what has come out of Shia's mouth since he got this job. :?

Though for once this interview he sounds a bit more credible, and managed to not swear.

I hate the way Shia seems to overhype the movie. It just sounds so...tacky. I would rather a little less hype and be pleasently or happily suprised, then have a lot of hype and be miserably dissapointed. I don't doubt it'll be like Jurrasic Park when it first came out, with grafics(sp) and realism like anybody had ever yet seen before. I just hope the story is good, and they change the appearance of Starscream and Megatron in the sequel.

I think that if anything really wrecks the chances of a sequel it'll be the schizophrenic feel this movie seems to be heading towards, a lot like Burton's Planet of the Apes.

At least a good 30% of the toys (cyber-slammers, cyber-stompers, fast-action battlers) are aimed at the under-8 crowd, in addition to the 'learn to read' and inevitable coloring books, the property is based on a children's toy-line, the script is full of lighthearted humor, a cameo by a popular comedian, etc..

At the same time you have the lead actor doing interviews for months and almost all of them are laced with profanity, you have them boasting about it barely getting a PG-13 rating, Megan Fox's TnA publicity stills...

I realize they have to try to appeal to the broadest possible audience but if they try too hard to appeal to too broad an audience you get a serious action movie full of unbearable sight gags and one-liners that kids aren''t allowed to see and adults find difficult to sit through.

Can I just ask, "Anthony Anderson"? As in that fellow from the TV show Hang Time?

Sheer intensity. Please.

It's Michael Bay. Even The Rock, as awesome as it is, gets a bit overbearing.

This movie isn't going to be a roller coaster of suspense.

Who's thinking another Van Helsing? Raise your hand.
Buy my RiD toys! They're awesome, I promise!!!!

And All About the Andersons, Kangaroo Jack, Barbershop, and Scary Movie 2 and 3.

To be fair though he isn't a bad actor. He had a bit part in The Departed and managed to hold a pretty strong on-screen presence as the villain in season 4 of The Shield.

Yeah, he's a pretty good actor. So is Shia, he's just swears a lot in real life. Hell, so do I.

At least I know when to clean it up.
