Transformers game

Postby Enigma Blackdragon » Sun Aug 26, 2007 6:22 am

Hi everyone!

I've always been a fan of the Transformers, and for atleast the last ten years I've also been playing various RPGs and miniature games (Warhammer 40K).

this might sound a bit weird, but does any one know of any game systems where one could play as or with transformers figures?
I was thinking of both some kind of RPG or Miniature game.

Just a thought ^^

Cheers!

Still, I'm waiting for answers concerning the original questions ;)

There are a number of RPG systems which would work for a TransFormers campaign. The best, and probably the most appropriate system is Mekton Zeta, by R,Talsorian Games. The whole system is based upon anime giant robots, and such. Its Mekton Technical system, which is in Mekton Zeta Plus. It has comprehensive rules that allows you to build literally any type of mecha you can imagine, including TransFormers. The rules for character creation are also pretty straight-forward as is play and skill and combat resolution. Just add you stat plus your skill plus a D10, usually against an opposed roll. It's also a purely skill-based system too, so you go up per skill not per class or character level. Very straight-forward, no "abstractions", and very detailed. It's perfect for TransFormers. In fact, one guy made a TransFormers suppliment for it based strictly upon the old cartoons. A new version that is more comprehensive would be better.

Here's the link to R.Talsorian's web site: http://www.talsorian.com/talsorian/NEWWEBSITE/default.htm

You can also order the game books directly from the company on that site. It is also compatible with their newest system, the Fuzion system (Mekton uses their older Interlock system). Their lifepath set-up is great for creating character histories too, and if you use anything from Fuzion, Or convert from Interlock to [i]Fuzion, they have an even more detailed life-path as well as perks, talents, and even complications.

I think he's looking for a table-top pen-and-paper role-playing game to play with his friends.

Ugh. Either way, Heavy Metal War's an RPG, which I'm recommending. If he tries is, he could enjoy it. The end.

I'm sure he could, but it wasn't what he was asking for. Go back and re-read his first post. He was specifically asking about table-top games (i.e. with miniatures and RPGs that use them)

I created a game that utilizes transformers' tech specs so that you can battle your toys against one another.

Check my game out at:

It's a lot of fun.
Try it out and leave some feedback!

Numerous pen and paper systems can be kitbashed very easily for both a Transformers RPG and a Transformers 'miniatures' game. I've had great success using a number of older systems, most of which tend to be easy to find and pretty cheap.

For 'miniatures' I've used Dream Pod 9's Silhouette system for Transformers, as well as their Heavy Gear Blitz rules. Also, with only a small amount of modification, you can easily use Steve Jackson's Car Wars rules. The difference is that Car Wars tends to be a bit on the more realistic side, while the two Dream Pod 9 systems are more cinematic.

For RPing, I steer clear of the various Mecha rule systems, mostly because they tend to require far more bookeeping on a character sheet than I'd ever want to do, generally because of the way they treat Transformers as big robots with armor locations, subsystems and all that. My approach to Transformers in a RPG is to treat them more like a traditional RPG character, ie instead of armor locations, they'd have hit points and armor class or something similar depending on what system I'm using.

Superhero games work great for Transformers as they allow you to customize for stuff that no other game can take into account ( which is also why one of the more famous TF games around the 'net uses Champions RPG ) as in all reality many TF characters tend to be closer to a Super Hero than a Mecha in the way their powers are used, or at least that's my opinion. Classic Marvel Superheroes and Champions have both worked very well for me before, and I think Mutants and Masterminds would as well. I actually use the 1st Edition of Hong Kong Action Theater these days, as it's more focused on fun, cinematic/cartoon style action, has a really simple rule system, and is built so that you can play pretty much any type of game with it.

I know someone who used Palladium's Rifts system for a great TF inspired game, and another person who ran pretty much TF: The Movie at a convention using White Wolf's World of Darkness 2.0. Depending on how you want to approach your game, you can pretty much get by with nearly any RPG system, if you're creative enough at messing with the rules.

The thing is though that some people prefer the armor locations stopping power and the "number crunching" as you put, the subsystems, armor, etc, it because it provides more realism allows you to create exactly the type of mecha and character's you envision. A lot of systems, particularly D20 are too vague and abstract, thus, as a result extremely limiting on what you can do. FYI, Champions now uses the Fuzion rules created by R.Talsorian. As seen in the game Champions: The New Millenium.

And other people may enjoy vague and abstract. As I said, it depends on how you approach your game. Personally, I like a story driven game with fast combat that's not bogged down with endless rules and statistics, so I go more abstract. I'd run a TF game using Everway if I could actually find my copy of the rules, simply because I'd never have to worry about stats and the focus would entirely be on story and character interaction. A high school friend of mine, on the other hand, swore by the original Mekton. For me and the majority of those I game with, number crunching and stats are something we look for in our miniature games, but not our RPGs. To each his own.

As far as Champions is concerned, I prefer the older, more GURPs or Palladium-like system. I detest the Fuzion rules and liked them better before they got complicated and were still the Interlock system used in Cyberpunk 2020.

Actually, tjhe combat itself is very quick It's just adding your applicable weapon skill plus REF stat plus a D10 verus your opponent's dodge or parry skill plus their REF stat plus a D10 Roll location and damage and subtract the SP of the armor from the rsult. The only thing even remotely complex is mecha construction, and that is only because it is detailed enough to allow you to create any knod of mecha you can imagine and has rules for them all. There is no guess-work. Also, if you use the cinimatic rules that come with the Tactical Display, it's even faster.
