What else is there to say about Super Megatron? Other than essentially Bad fan fiction... >:oP
Care to elaborate?
He is bad fan fiction in the same vein as the insulting trash that was IDW's Transformers: Deviations IE A sad attempt to reset the changes made by The Movie, by some who just can't accept change.
You call it "a sad attempt to reset", I call it A. A followup of the plot bunny left by The Headmasters (since the idea of Galvatron actually perishing from his plunge into the Arctic sea is laughable) and B. Dark Nova wanting his servant to have a body free of Unicron's influence. It's no worse than some of the revivals from the Marvel comics (not that that's saying much).
You want a stupid reversion, I'll give you a stupid reversion: the way Classic Pretender Bumblebee was integrated into the Marvel storyline. Which is literally "Ratchet turns Goldbug back into Bumblebee in the process because he liked him better as Bumblebee".

AllNewSuperRobot wrote:Even the televised seasons of the Takara series moved far beyond Prime and Megatron. Which should be applauded
No it shouldn't, at least not as it applies to Optimus Prime. Because the way it "moved beyond" him is almost as stupid as "Afterdeath". :-x

AllNewSuperRobot wrote:Stagnated for everyone that wants New Transformers again. Something beyond G1.
The movieverse was giving us that, at least before Travis Knight went ruined it. IDW was in many ways G1INO. The Unicron Trilogy was different, Animated was different, Prime was different.

And who's to say what comes after Cyberverse.

You mean how headmasters quickly killed Prime off again just to sell Fortress Maximus as the new Autobot leader... Then in Masterforce brought in God Ginrai as bot leader etc etc.

I'm okay with that as I wouldn't have brought Prime back anyway. I mean it was only backlash that forced hasbro's hand anyway. Though if you think of it the other way. The only reason we got Ginrai as the leader in Masterforce was because the toy of Powermaster Prime existed, and that only existed because they chose to bring Prime back. :-?

Yes. How it quickly killed him off again in a lame way because he didn't have a toy out anymore. And also how it then invalidated that sacrifice a scant few episodes later by blowing up Cybertron. :-x

Dude, were you even alive when Return of Convoy happened?

And if so, were you even aware of it at the time? Like did you actually live in Japan back then?

If "No" to either, you're getting worked up over something from 29 years ago that had zero relevance to you at the time. Let it go.

The thing with Super Megatron is that while, yes, he is 'a G1 Megatron' he's a design which never got made into a toy. So that's a tad bit different than yet-another-G1-remake-with-elbows-this-time. This is, toy-wise, a brand new design. One which has existed in the lore and illustrations but never got made as a physical model, yet alone a transforming toy. Beside, SELECTS is where we get the weird retools.

I'd actually be very much in favor of more Unicron Trilogy designs as the major releases of a Generations line. But SELECTS? Yeah sure why not, its the perfect place for us weirdoes who like obscure design from a crummy era of Transformers nobody cares about and we just pretend we do because we're hipsters who are suckers for a design that make us go 'Hey, that looks neat'.

I'd rather have the resurrection of Animated designs we got cheated of, than more Unicron Trilogy remakes that are pale imitations despite sometimes having improved articulation.

But I would prefer Generations to mainly concentrate on finishing the G1 upgrades first. Once those are finally done with...

If Animated figures are ever offered again, I hope they keep the aesthetics, it's what made them stand out. I know a lot of people complained about the proportions of the bodies, but I liked how they looked. The only way I want to see Animated again, is if they don't attempt to 'update' them. Because it wouldn't be an update, it would be a cheap imitation.

Speaking of Animated, what are the chances of us getting a Slipstream from ER Starscream? Given her prominence (I assume, haven't watched it yet) in Cyberverse, I think she might make the jump to Generations, but I can't see her getting a retail release until maybe after the third part of WFC. I think it might be kind of fun to see her in SELECTS though

Same. Especially since I wound up preordering my stuff after most places had sold out of the first four, and the only places left were shipping from China, meaning I paid about forty dollars just in shipping from one place and about twenty-five in shipping from another... Ouch.

Looks like Overbite is just balancing there with Turtler's little legs pinning his tail down. The rest is pretty straightforward though, not sure why they swapped his hands and feet, I think the hands would look better in front as claws.

Edit: Wait, no, that isn't right. How did the little legs end up on his back like that? I need to open mine up and mess around with it, I'm lost.

I would like, if some of these Selects did at least pay a little nod to the 20th anniversary of Car Robots this year. We certainly have enough variety of Car Bots in WFC to redeco/retool a Mach Alert, Wildride or Speedbreaker?

Or some BM Vehicons in the molds of Brunt, Six gun etc?

That is an elaborated comment, within the context of the previous discussion on the current state of "Evergreen". Not that I am worked up in the slightest. Given the current state of the world, your priorities would have to be Very Wrong if any of this remotely bothers you.

The Headmasters is full of stupid.

Think of it this way, Many say how the Takara Series ignored The Rebirth alone. But essentially by killing off Prime immediately, they are undoing Return of Optimus Prime too. Perhaps because the Home Fanbase didn't want him back, following The Movie?

To look at the Takara Series in a broader sense, other than some early visual cameos in the opening episodes, they largely pushed the new characters throughout. You could dismiss that cynically as "New Toys", but look at the changing cast from one series to the next. Unlike Takara, there wasn't really any knee-jerk backpeddling. No documented outcry which lead to former characters returning?

Look at the leadership of both sides in only three series. Rodimus, Fortress, Ginrai, Star Saber to Dai Atlas. The Cons likewise went even further later, with non-Transformers taking lead of them.

It is strange that for a series that is literally about change, how many seem resistant to the very concept.

I do wonder, if the Takara series had been redubbed and released in the west at the time, if I would have liked it? Although, as a kid, I would have absolutely hated how they "killed" Galvatron...

ZeroWolf wrote:You mean how headmasters quickly killed Prime off again just to sell Fortress Maximus as the new Autobot leader... Then in Masterforce brought in God Ginrai as bot leader etc etc.

Ginrai was not Prime though. Visually similar, in the way others have since been EG Primal, Lio Convoy, Car Robots Prime etc but it wasn't the same character. Nor intended to be.
I always thought The Return of Optimus Prime should have been the onscreen debut of Powermaster Prime, the only original Prime design I liked, but for whatever reason they didn't make it so. :???:

Oh I know Ginrai is no prime (I prefer Ginrai to be fair, he actually has development!) my comment was more how Takara changed Autobot leader from show to show. I agree with the rest of your comment though.

As to why powermaster Prime wasn't used, without checking dates, it's likely that the Toy wasn't ready (was a prime toy re-released when season 3 aired?) PMOP came out in 1988.

Anyway, back to Selects, I wonder what the height difference will be between Star Convoy and Super Megs :-? Guess we'll find out tomorrow when they reveal him (though Ultra Megs will likely never be made outside of a 3rd party add on kit to Super Megs given how close they are in appearance.)

Oddly enough, the original Op was offered via mail-away in '86 and '88, but not '87, IIRC. His 2 episode Return was purely the Sunbow creators bringing him back into the 'toon as fast as they could respond to all the hate mail they got over his Movie death. It's doubtful anyone working on the cartoon had any idea an all-new Optimus toy would be on shelves in less than 2 years.

The '86 mail-away offer was on the back of the S.T.A.R.S. TFTM poster (the one where Wheelie's in bot mode on the right, and you can see Hot Rod's back behind Kup)

It was likely mailed out to anyone who'd ordered from the first TF "special offer", with the Omnibots, Powerdashers, and Time Warrior. I bought Camshaft and (randomly) Drill Dasher, so I got one in the mail not too long afterward. You were supposed to save your ticket stub instead of Robot Points for Op and/or Megs (Reflector was on the form too, for the heck of it). "See them in the movie, play with them at home" Though after seeing them die in The Movie, I had mixed feelings and never ordered, being among the kids that had no problem with Op's death, since it proved that violence had consequences and cartoons could have actual continuity.

The '88 mail-away was the infamous Digital Doom On The Highway To Destruction. Got my copy of the form with Powermaster Optimus Prime, so it seemed redundant by that point.

EDIT: Here's the link to the latter, since the former's page is tough to link to, but can be reached in the last link under the fist NOTE in DDOTHTD:

If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if Sunbow's bringing Optimus back in the show is what inspired Hasbro to create the new Powermaster OP toy in the first place, which would have made it impossible for the Powermaster toy to have been used for that two-parter since the idea for it wouldn't have come about until after the episodes had already been made and aired.

It's a series about things changing into other things. It's absolutely NOT about "change" in some idealized form.

There have been plenty of iterations "beyond G1" (Beast Wars - which hilariously has come back itself, Car Robots (my favorite of the bunch), Cybertron series) but you always come back to the classics, if not because of nostalgia then because of pragmatism - or even capitalism.

If Hasbro decides to go in some different direction, good for them. If I like it, I'll buy it. If not I won't. But what you won't see me do is essentially bash a concept or a part of the fandom because I won't participate in something I don't like, then claim "everyone" as if that's a thing.

It said April 2. Today is April 1.

Yes, here, but technically it is already April 2 in Japan, so it could be any time now.

The thing is Transformers in the post-Aligned continuity era is in a weird phase. Beast Era and to an extent RiD 2001 was still very 'post G1'. Unicron Trilogy, Animated and Movie eras were in full reboot mode with crazier ideas. Then came Aligned, which tried to tie it all together as a 'unified style' but somewhat failed (in a manner of speaking) because TF Prime quickly became its own thing.

We are in the era of 'Brand Unification'. The franchise is helmed by G1 purists and the corporate suits understand that '80 nostalgia and the original tv show mean people will always recognize GEEWUN more than any current incarnation.
