The 3P Raiden is to stand at 27" tall. Whether that has a knock on effect or influence on the HasTak release, time will tell.

Raiden is supposed to be the same size as UW/CW Devastator. One thing is sure though. Each components will not be made out of Tupperware containers snapped together like Devy. They will have high level of engineering and have high parts count. By today's standard, they will be "voyager sized" but classified as "leaders" for parts counts.

The overall price will not be "average Joe" friendly.

We don't know that for sure. We assume/hope that is the case, but the interview with Kōjin Ōno just said that he would be "Unite Warriors size", without specifying if he meant "UW Devastator size" or "the main general size of every UW Combiner but Devastator".

It would have made the most sense for him to mention Devastator by name since he was the only one of his size in the UW line, but he instead uses the vaguer, broader description of "Unite Warriors size", mentioning the name of the whole line that was all one size except for Devastator.

Raiden back in Diaclone was meant to work with/against Devastator, hence why they were the only 6 robot combiners in the line at the time, and they parts-formed a bit. I wonder if Raiden will parts-form.

Raiden was such a weird missed opportunity by Hasbro within the western line. A combiner set of transforming trains would have sold just as much as any other Gestalt, back in G1.

It also wouldn't have made Devastator seem so out of place, as the only combiner team without a "rival" team.

I'm on the fence about getting Raiden though. Official or 3P. As much as I have a fondness for Gestalts, I can't help but think he would feel a bit out of place.

In Hindsight yes. IMHO It would have been neat for Hasbro to license them the same time they did the Diaclone Construction team. I wonder how history would have changed if they introduced the Trainbots late S1/ early S2. They of course would have had western names, and would not be "Raiden" as we know it from the 1987 Headmasters Series.

Worst case scenario, Hasbro might not have licensed the Mechabot-1 from Toybox to create Omega Supreme. Or... they could have obtained license from another Japanese Toy manufacturer of Transforming robots to create an evil rival for him...there certainly was no shortage of Transforming Robots in Japan in the early 80's .

In any event. I am really looking forward to MP Raiden. He will be perfect as a rival for PotP Predaking. While I love CC Skylynx, I believe he is a bit too small (or rather Predaking is too big), but Raiden will fix that, if they do it right. I'm still hoping for a KO undersized 12 inch PotP Predaking just like they did for CW Devastator

I'd love to have known what the selection process involved, back then. As you say, there were so many to choose from.

In a way, considering Takara's original stance that there would be no MP Gestalts. Raiden is the only one that makes sense here, to be incorporated into this line. Much like Star Saber, the team can exist as a one-off.

While I still don't see the logic in MP Jetfire, given such a big deal was made about the Siege release. I suppose he is part of the Season 2 cast. Which, as incredible as it sounds, is still as far as the G1 Masterpiece line has progressed.

Indeed, plus Arcee. Which is a massive kick in the teeth to those fans (hi) waiting on The Movie and beyond, characters. I mean if there is a market for MP Skids, surely MP Wreck-Gar must be on someone's wish list?

It's more their altmode that Takara are banking Skids and Reboost on, rather than their status as Transformers characters, since the two are being made for the Honda City Turbo's 40th anniversary.

I see your point. But if this had been a random Diaclone, non-show character that transformed into a Honda City would they still have banked on it being a part of this line? From what I can gather, Skids presence in the show was minimal, at best.

Which gave writers a bit of a blank slate to work with. So naturally in Japan he was made a Dimensional sentry of some sort, along with others of a similar body type like Screech. How popular that made him is anyone's guess.

I've always been curious about the popularity of the tertiary+ characters. I wonder where it is gauged?

I do like the aesthetic of redeco variants in Skids and Reboost. It is unfortunate that Car Bots don't really go with the rest of my MP collection. They would fit in among my other various jets, beasts etc that live on my City Bot displays.

Yeah, it would have been amazing to go to those toy shows in the early 80's. A veritable buffet of Transforming toys. A little Beetras here, a little, Dorvak over here, and some Bandai Macross for dessert...that's not going to be a problem right?

As long as they work the Mini-Con gimmick in, I'm good.

Because of their overall visual design, I always saw UT in their own scaling. Much like the Headmasters being future cars/vehicles should technically make them bigger than "older", pre-Movie Car Bots.

For example, regardless of him being a Leader, Armada Megatron has no size equivalent Tank Bot in G1 (not including Six-Changers).

I'd welcome the MP UT line being their own thing. They were in their era, why not in Masterpiece?

At last! Our first glimpses of MP Raiden and MP Jetfire (here called Jetfire rather than "Skyfire" despite the latter being the name used when we first heard about it, and it's what he was called in the cartoon so it would make the most sense to use that name for this release, but I digress. We'll just have to wait and see which name is used in the final release).
