I've never known why people were so sure it would be something different from WFC. The bizarre character choices like Jazz (who had at most 10 seconds of sceen time in the 86 movie) and the fact that at this point there's no character overlap between this and WFC were dead giveaways to me that SS86 was meant to compliment the WFC figures, not do something different.

I want to see how Hot Rod's arms transform. Isn't there a scene in the movie where his arms rotate 180 degrees? I think this figure may do something like that, which is an uncommon approach for a Hot Rod toy.

I complained in the earlier thread about screen accuracy over transformation and the negative mini Masterpiece approach of other figures like ER Arcee, but the more I see of it, the more I want to give this Hot Rod a chance.

Going by the leak we saw earlier, you know, the "Big Foot sighting footage," this looks to be an amazing rendition of Hot Rod. In this clearer pic, the figure is obviously very mistransformed. The arms are completely backwards! You can tell from the hollow parts on the "tops" of the fists, the missing forearm sculpting and paint details, the missing white paint apps on the shoulders, and the fact that the wheels are facing front, not back, on the shoulders. If this is a Deluxe-scaled figure at the Voyager price point, I think some of that extra cost could come from added accessories, but my bet is that the extra "value" is found mostly in the complexity of the figure at the Deluxe scale. I'm not sure how those arms get turned around when you transform him the right way, but it's got to be at least a little more complicated than what we usually see in a Deluxe Class War for Cybertron Trilogy figure. Looks like those hands are articulated as well, a la Earthrise Optimus Prime. I wouldn't be surprised if the wheels on the outsides of the lower legs can be rotated to the back of the legs instead as well, but time will tell. It's not the end of the world for me if they don't, since that's where the end up usually on the majority of Hot Rod toys, including the original G1 figure, but I've got a good feeling, just based on how well the rest of the figure seems to come together in robot mode (when properly transformed).

Kup looks a little less on point to me, unfortunately. I don't mind the added "tech" detailing under the windshield, as Kup is a Cybertronian pick-up truck, and that matches with other Cybertronian car forms we've seen in the War for Cybertron Trilogy so far, particularly in Siege. But, he is missing some paint apps, like some gray on his midriff, and I don't like that his back wheels are just in the middle of his shins in robot mode. Maybe something wraps around from the back of the legs to cover them up? Looking at Kup's character model, his shins do push out quite a ways further than the upper parts of his legs, and these lower leg panels seem to be flush from the knee down to the feet (which also look to be very mistransformed). It's easy to see how the shoulder and side torso assemblies are suppose to come together, so I'm not dinging the figure for that, but the "Huffer hoodie" behind the head is way too far up. It should really only come up to the top of the neck/base of the "skull."

Well there goes the theory that they had put these in Studio Series because of the mission statement of the line, guess it was sadly just more G1. Ah well, what can you do? >:oP

I think the whole point of it is because of the original Transformers Movie, at least thats what I believe, so in a way it makes sense and it could be a way to get some versions of those characters without any weird gimmicks.

Isn't this what we expected all along, though? I'm not terribly disappointed. Going off the apparent mistransformations of both Hot Rod and Kup, I'm guessing these are still very screen accurate representations of the figures when all is said and done (correctly). Again, these look like potential "Mini Masterpieces" like other figures from the War for Cybertron Trilogy. These figures manage to fill TWO major boxes at once, being G1 screen accurate to the cartoon AND to the 1986 animated movie, which is essentially the original Sunbow cartoon with a bigger animation budget. Hence, these two look very close to how they looked on screen in The Transformers: The Movie, with the glaring exception that Hot Rod is deep red and not fuchsia. ;)

Is it not the "mission statement" of the studio series to present figures from Transformers movies in as accurate of detail to the big screen as possible? It just happens to be that for the 1986 animated movie, that is the same thing as looking like the G1 cartoon.

I'm okay with it.

When we get multiple consecutive years with fewer than a dozen G1 toys released in it, it would be OK.

WFC. WFC Netflix. Selects. Cyberverse (basically kiddy G1 with a hell of a lot better fiction and a little better grasp on varying source materials). RED. Even the dollar store releases in Evergreen style.

It's easy for me to be okay with it, since I have bought Bayverse characters since Hunt for the Decepticons. I do admit, it's a bit much in terms of sheer volume, but that's our choice as to how much and what we buy. It's going up, even for me, because I have a young son who has fallen in love with the characters, too.

Heck, my daughter has already asked me for Earthrise Arcee, and when she finds out there's a Hot Rod I'm going to end up needing THREE of them.

It probably boils down to money £30 for a ss voyager compared to a £23 wfc voyager. Wfc collectors are going to wish they were released as wfc :( Plus it probably widens the target consumers ss figures are aimed at in parts of the world, so more sales there too.

These look really nice. The fossilizer looks better than I thought he would.

As much as I like Hot Rod more, Rodimus Prime is really the missing link in the animated movie cast. Still he looks fantastic!

I know it cost like a nickle more per figure, but man I'm tired of them always skimping on the chrome on Hot Rod.

I remember us all debating the same thing with the previous MP, who also seemed to have an arm flip going on. And many of us (including me) thought they would do that 180 thing from the cartoon. But it turned out to just be a simple flip on the individual shoulders. I think in the end, it will be more streamlined than we think. And I too think that the car sides flip into his shins, it would just make sense as a design.

as Kup is a Cybertronian pic-kup truck

I do not. I was just pointing out the facts.
My personal reaction to this is that I don't need this Hot Rod, at all. Nor do I need that Kup. But I am curious with the design (since Hot Rod is probably the most complicated car TF design to do well) and if I see enough of it, I will make sure to sell some of my toys before they are rendered worthless by these.

It's been more noticeable with the devy bots and especially bee Blitzwing at £30 for an unlicensed jet mode compared to er snap dragon is like wuuut. My ss collection is only stuff that has gone on sale and as much as I'd like Blitzwing, that is crazy money in comparison.

Maybe this has more to do with how these toys are priced by various types of brick-and-mortor stores in the UK? In the U.S., there is no price difference between War for Cybertron and Studio Series at all. All Deluxes, Voyagers, and Leaders are at the same prices: $19.99, $29.99, and $49.99 respectively, regardless of whether they belong to Siege, Earthrise, or Studio Series (or even Generations Selects for the most part).

There was only one in that movie and it never changed into its body part mode (for obvious reasons since doing so by itself without the others would be silly :P ).

Maybe but it has been around since Titan returns for price differences over here. Current prices below are from retail toy stores (equivalents to toys r us at least in the case of Smyths)

Ss deluxe £20-£21, Voyager £30-£31, Leader £50+
WFC deluxe £17, Voayager £24, Leader £47
Netflix deluxe £20, Voyagers with minis £40, Leader spoiler boxes £60

Pretty sure SS Voyagers like Starscream and Megatron in the early waves were cheaper than the current prices but same for non ss voyagers that were still a few £ cheaper back then.

It's definitely going to be different from how MP-28 handled flipping the arms around. For one, they are completely backwards in this new image. If you turned the arms around like in the Masterpiece figure, Hot Rod's thumbs would be pointing outwards, not inwards (as is anatomically correct for Humans AND Super Robot Life Forms). Rotating the fists won't work, because then the thumbs would be below the other fingers, not above. The exhaust pipes would also be on the inside instead of the outside. The arms have to somehow rotate around the central, vertical axis of Hot Rod by 180 degrees to get everything looking right. Remember, we're now dealing with a fuax chest too, while MP-28 managed to use the actual car hood for the chest. That's a lot of room for some fancy engineering "under the hood," as it were.

Interesting that this is your takeaway, since I just came away from these pics realizing that Hasbro seems to be much more focused on screen accuracy instead of addition detailing with these since both Kup and Hotrod have SIGNIFICANTLY less panel details and much more blank spaces across their design then anything we've seen from WFC. Disappointing to me, but maybe you like your dedicated G1 accuracy. To each their own!

That's just life, Ryan.

I think they are going for screen accuracy in the budget of what they're selling. I don't expect a 20 dollar toy to literally jump out of the screen, but it's definitely close. Plus, all mistransformed you aren't seeing them in the best light.

Maybe this has more to do with how these toys are priced by various types of brick-and-mortor stores in the UK?

Is that just Entertainer prices or including Smyths? Sadly I've been buying less in b&m and sticking to mostly online for that reason
