Star Wars, however, needs another trilogy. I know Mark, Carrie, and Harrison aren't dead yet.

Funny you say that. Just the other night when I was out at dinner with my wife and some of her friends I got into a debate with one girl who was convinced Mark Hamil is dead. It got to the stage that I think she would have to meet Mark Hamil to realise he's not actually dead.

He does voices for animated series now. The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series was probably his most prominent.

I'm still reeling from the fact that he was in Guyver live action movie... Mark is a huge guyver fan from what i understand, and though the guyver live action movies sucked ass, i am still a fan of the concept..

But Star wars and Start trek are like american staples of Sci-fi..which is why things need to change for the better...
Super hero movies are great as a sort of replacement, but they really should be in their own category..

Farscape was a step in the right direction.. it was new and fresh and didn't fit the classic scifi mold.. but then it got cancelled.. so did Star rangers, Babylon 5, Deep Space 9, voyager, ect.. ect... I mean how many episodes can you do based on your own ship, or space station for that matter before it gets really old?? Babylon 5, you miss one episode, thats it, you are completely lost in the series...

Now I wouldn't mind seeing a metal gear movie, that would be cool, it should be directed by the guys who did the Matrix, only have a different writer.. since the last 2 matrix stories sucked!!! Neo dies? The robots live up top still? there was only a truce for the war?? what a joke!!! crappy ending for the series.. i can't even bring myself to watch it again.. the only one I like would be the first one..the second was okay, but it went stale through the middle...

Anyways.. new sci-fi, Mecha, and Mech warrior movie with all the mecha clans at war, that would be cool..too

you know a Beast wars series in live action wouldn't be so bad either.. it could be set in ancient times like the tv series or it could be set in the jungle and be like predator was...but I could see them doing an ape which turns into a kibble prime..

Same goes for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - it's been in development for a good 3-4 years at least. Some recent rumblings could mean that things are starting to move forwards again for the MOTU movie. Just like with Voltron - this TF movie hasn't been a part of development process considerations.

This TF movie has been part of development process considerations, though. For a start, all movies are. Also, this film has been in development officially since 2003, and no doubt the property was being tossed around Hollywood before then.

As for He-Man...I hope it finally gets off the ground! Every year I read about new developments or new setbacks.

If the guys running the Transformers movie were on the project, Kirk would be played by some boring asshat like Van Damme or The Rock... you know, because it "wouldn't be possible" to hire someone with a similar look or expression of character.

As for Klingons... they'd be mute, overly (unconvincingly) messed up CGI versions of Aliens.

I can see it now...

Maybe, but William Shatner was never very good at expression of character, anyway!

And yet, confoundingly enough, alot of people like him.

Point being, anything that isn't him is not him.

Alot of... well, tons of stuff in the Transformers movie is not like anything.

I've always wondered if, when Star Trek was first broadcast, people thought Shatner was a good actor. I can imagine time would make fans' hearts grow fonder, but was he so well loved in the initial run? I have no idea.

Back then, they were probably too distracted that the engine room was run by a Russian, there was a tiny "Nip" running the controls, and the communications were handled by a woman who was also negro.

(Wasn't the show cancelled due to poor ratings? lol)

I don't know. I thought it was a huge hit, but I've never looked into it. I did hear that it had the first interracial kiss on TV fiction, and that caused quite a stir, apparently.

Actually the engine room was run but a scottish guy, imaginatively named "scottie". The russion guy was named Chekov, and he was always at the helm of the Enterprise.

I can't see them including the Oedipus complex, end-of-the-world psychosis, scenes of extreme gore, beer-drinking penguin, Christian terminology applied to monsters, or any of the other things that made the series so infamous and different into a 2-hour PG-13 movie. Even with a visionary director it's have to be gutted and watered-down for a mainstream audience. Then we'd have people going "it was an overrated and cheesy series to begin with and the monster fights were the best part" and arguing with people who really love the the series for everything it was. It'd be the Transformers movie all over again.

No, it'd be FAR worse than what's happening in our fandom. There'd be all-out warfare online, probably a few riots over in Japan...

Evangelion is almost a religon of sorts....

My point, which I had thought was pretty clear, is that this Transformers movie has not been influential in the development of either the Voltron or MOTU movies. The new TF movie hasn't even come out yet, ergo it can not possibly have figured into anyone's calculations concerning the Voltron or MOTU movies.

Dean Devlin (guy who did Stargate, Independence Day, The Patriot, Eight Legged Freaks, Cellular, and Fly Boys) is heading that business up. The last official news is that the project is in "development hell" after Paramount dropped it sometime in 2004. I know he had a quote where he said "development hell" could take quite awhile. I can't imagine many studios are chomping at the bit to make a sci-fi picture based on a tabletop game which was based on anime mecha and 1980s technology.

I think if Transformers is successful it's very possible it'll get picked up. I hope it does. I love BattleTech and Mechwarrior and MechCommander. The Mech Assaults sucked though. And MechWarrior: Dark Age is god awful.

Nonetheless, the last official comment on the film from Devlin was made in 2004. He may have dropped the project all together at this point.

My only concern about this being the new age of Mecha in movies is will TF be the Bench mark will every thing else be cheap knock offs. Remember when the matrix came out shortly after you had about 10 movies with people clad in leather shooting in slow motion.

Oh yeah after the George Lucas Debacle Hollywood should be banned from making anymore prequels............ EVER!!!!!!!!! I dont care what the subject matter is.

Three very good movies, and he also did Godzilla '98.

Opinions differ on that one.

EDIT: What the fook was The Patriot? Was that the one where Mel Gibson was in the Revolutionary War?

That's because Devlin is a producer. The only directing experience he has in his entire career is as the 2nd Unit Director on Independence Day.

And he produced every single film I listed.
