Transformers vs ??? - Potential crossovers discussion thread

I was thinking about crossovers, the ones that have worked in recent years. Which led me to think about an untapped Transformers crossover, one that would actually complement the property instead of using it as a nonsensical editorial springboard. This was one such idea that came to me:

Don't base it on any particular time period of either show, perhaps even base Beast Wars within the Mini Comic continuity. But I think the two together would work really well.

Both of those ideas rock!

Transformers vs Gundam would be fun, preferably a wacky G Gundam style though. Zeon or EFSF vs Autobots or Decepticons sounds kinda like a snooze.

Also Transformers vs Mario. I don't know how it would work either.

Most Sunbow animated shows, and some Hasbro properties would be great. GI Joe has been done, but I'd love to see TF crossover with Robotix & Inhumanoids. Battle Beasts *technically* has been done already, but I'd love to see more.
Bucket/Want List: Botcon 2016 Customization Class Ratchet (G2 Deco), or Customization Class Ratchet (Marvel Comics Deco) **would also be willing to pay for an Unpainted Botcon 2016 Ratchet, TT Legends Fortress Head (only) with working Electronics

Wish List of Modern Combiners: Road Caesar, Monstructor & Dinoking (proper size to fiction), Landcross, Guard City, Battle Gaia, & G2 Defensor. Wish List of Titans:Metrotitan,Majin Zarak

So the first part of post-Rev GI Joe was building to Inhumanoids pretty unambiguously. Yet somehow, when it's time for the big reveal, it was Fatal Fluffies all along. Bad writing? Nope. Apparently there was some sudden and unanticipated murkiness on who owns the IP so they shuffled plans. I don't know any details that are more solid than this, unfortunately.

I would have liked to see more of Jem get integrated in IDW beyond the acknowledgements by creative that their comic was in the same universe, a Misfits poster, and Rock 'N' Roll's history as their roadie. Too late now, it would seem!

Actually, the IDW Jem series CAN’T be in the same universe as the rest of the books. Rock was one of the early Joe recruits back in 2006, and he roadied for the Holograms prior to that. In the Jem series, the band is formed in the present around 2015. Which means we have an Earth 2-type situation, where the Holograms and Misfits of the Hasbro Universe are about 10 years older than their main Jem series counterparts.

Incidentally, this also makes the Misfits the Hasbro Universe’s equivalent of American Idiot-era Green Day and other early-2000s pop punk bands.

But I digress. Personally, I would’ve liked to have seen more elements from Air Raiders. I mean, I know Bludgeon referenced Airlandia in Transformers: Salvation, but that was it.

Also, I really would’ve liked to have seen some of the Super Joe characters worked in, like Darkon or Luminos.

So who owns Starcom now?

This was another series that, although the cast were all humanoid size and shape, could work very well as a crossover with Transformers. Due to the multifaceted vehicles used in the show.

Obviously you could ditch the dated jingoism (as Mattel did when they brought the original toys to Europe) and you could apply the characters to any planet in the Transformers universe.

EDIT: Fixing pics... Again

Exactly. I think Starcom didn't do as well outside the States for the same reasons GI-Joe is still irrelevant outside the US; All the patriotism. Once that's out of the way, both are quite interesting.

Oddly enough from what I've read, Starcom did better outside the US than inside. Naturally after Mattel ditched the subtitle and all the US flags peppered over everything. I had so many of the Shadow Force toys :-D

I do remember, in the GI Joe cartoon movie I think it was, the narrator did try to add some line about how the Joes were an "international" organisation. Didn't buy it then, still don't

I find you have to be very careful how you market things like that. For example, it was only with the release of the MCU films Captain America found an audience outside of the US. They clearly toned down a lot of the more overt propaganda to do so.
Likewise how they largely dropped that angle with Superman altogether, as well as half the title of the Justice League (of America).

That implies G.I. Joe is relevant in the US.

A random display I assembled on my desk recently. Bucky O' Hare X Beast Wars could work surprisingly well. Megatron would find a strong ally in Toadborg and/or Komplex. Infiltrating the Toad army wouldn't be too hard for the Predacons either (yes I know the above are frogs, but that is just semantics). By the same token, the Maximals could be quite at home onboard the Righteous Indignation.

In light of the recent Ghostbusters, BTTF, Top Gun etc crossovers, I thought to revive this thread and this time incorporate the toylines too.

For example, what if you took Transformers and crossed them with an entire universe of unique vehicles?

The Gerry Anderson Universe - Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet etc, etc

These two, immediately came to mind. Sound off with your own!

There're already three crossover characters which haven't been made into toys yet (potentially four if you retool one of them - first as a Spaceknight, then as a Dire Wraith).
Image

Image

I'd also like to see Weaponizers and similar designs adapted to franchises with a modularity gimmick. I could easily see a Weaponizer Biotron lookalike for Micronauts, or an Unnatural Fossilizer for Xevoz.
Image
Image

Storywise, there was a proposal for a Justice League crossover by Phil Jimenez that got cancelled because they were too busy with the then-upcoming New 52 reboot. I hope they eventually pick this up again; not only it had a Bat-former an Invisible Jet-former, but Optimus as a Green Lantern!
Image

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot: Shadow Raiders! Between the cool vehicles from the cartoon (my favorite were the organic ships from Bone) and the planet/battle stations from the toyline, there's plenty of potential for cool altmodes and alien robot designs.

I say go for a Transformers versus Star Wars crossover finally. I want to see Megatron attempt to work with the Galactic Empire and see Shockwave abduct Force-sensitives to infuse the Decepticon army with it. Hell, I'd also like to see some of the mech concepts from the toy line they did come to the fiction as well.

The Dino-Riders one is also a good one too I admit.

I'm really surprised there hasn't been anything done with Dino-Riders. Running in parallel with any of the Jurassic World releases? Mattel releasing a half-hearted collection of mini figures a couple years ago, isn't really good enough.

Now, I'm not overly familiar with 40K lore. So this is more a pitch for a Figure crossover than a comic or show. The general gist I get is that tonally, this is what I've wanted Transformers to lean towards for years.

Looking at the images above. There is nothing I can't see as a Robot in Disguise. To go one step further, the Space Marines give me a Pretender Shell vibe that could finally lead to that sub-line's revival too.

There's a lot of iconic vehicles (from a 40k fans point of view) that would work as a Crossover. Though you say the tone us what you'd want in a TF work, I'd say hold your horses a little as the tone was purely meant to be satirical when it was first brought out back in 87 (Transformers is only 3 years older than 40k). I do think Hasbro would approach this cautiously, as they prefer their conflicts black and white while 40k has no real good guys.

However looking away from that fact, a Thunderhawk gunship or a land raider tf would be my best bet if such a Crossover occured...Though for an opponent, just have the necron monolith transform, they're already essentially robots!

That's the impression I got too. Which as I've discussed in the comics threads, it is how the Transformers should be also.

To be fair, comics would be the only place where you might see that take (and G1 fans would hate it all the more). Comic creators get more leeway with that sort of thing then people making the cartoons.

That's the frustrating part about the comics. Furman's -Ations run did just that. Then came All Hail Megatron and the rest of IDWverse which took all that was different and interesting. Casually tossing it aside for 80's nostalgia in the former and somewhat creepy overhumanisation of the principal cast for the latter.

Then again, Transformers typically only really hits it's stride and becomes interesting with it's themes and concepts before (often) cancellation.

Probably either because if you know the end is near, you've got nothing to lose, or that's how long it takes to be trusted with the property to explore the themes.
