Transformers: War Crimes

((Been kind of inspired with what IDW is doing with the new MTMTE and RiD spin-offs. Some similarities in this, but hopefully it will be different enough as well as I tinker with it.))

A gallery of fools. The room where the trial was being conducted was filled to the rafters with Cybertronian life. Autobots. Decepticon captives. The non-aligned. The latter were especially well-represented. Starscream had never seen so many gathered in one place since just after the war had begun. That brief, transitional period when Megatron had allowed Cybertronians to remain uncommitted. It was a fast transition, to say the least. In short order, one was either for the Decepticons, or they were enemies to be eliminated. There was no concept of neutrality in the ranks of the Decepticon high command, such as it was back then.

Now here they were, ready to watch and revel in the parade of prisoners of war and other criminals that were being steadily brought before Aequitas and Chief Justice Tyrest in order to have their guilt assessed and their sentence ordered. Fleeting victory, Starscream thought. None of the non-aligned had any hand in the great drama that was playing out before their very optics. They were bystanders. Observers who had absolutely no hand in shaping the Cybertron that now lay before them. For as much as they likely pitied him, Starscream pitied them all the more. The Autobots had won, but Cybertron was stronger now because of the ravages it had gone through for many, many vorns now. It was stronger because it had been tested by fire through the likes of Megatron, Straxus and—unquestionably—Starscream himself.

“You stand before Aequitas,” Tyrest began after the Autobot guards had moved Starscream in to position, locking his hands in to the terminal in front of him. Starscream winced a little as he felt a hundred tiny probes lock themselves directly in to his circuitry. “You will be judged.”

Starscream’s dark, metallic facial features were currently sporting the faintest hint of a smirk as he looked from one side of the room to the other. Prowl. Ironhide. Ultra Magnus. Quite a few recognizable Autobots in attendance. How considerate of them. Conspicuous by his absence, however, was the great Optimus Prime himself. Did his trial not warrant a visit by the vaunted Prime?

You would think so. I certainly executed enough of his subordinates, the Seeker mused to himself. Looking to the other side, he saw Ratbat. Apparently he had been called out just prior to Starscream and was already in the process of being remanded in to the custody of the rapidly expanding prison population. His head was hanging low. Why was he so depressed? He was a senator, once upon a time. A part of the Cybertronian societal machine. And here it was, on full display for all to see. One orderly sentence after another. Just the sort of rigid, ordered nonsense that Starscream had rebelled against when he had joined Megatron’s little revolution.

Whatever Ratbat's current issue was, Starscream had more important matters to focus on.

“Let’s just get this over with,” Starscream finally spoke, looking up at Tyrest and the other Cybertronian officials who were presiding over the war crimes tribunals that had been initiated against the surviving members of the Decepticon empire…faction…movement…whatever one wanted to call it now.

Starscream could feel a rumble underneath his feet as the semi-sentient Aequitas machine charged itself up to full power, a process that always seemed to elicit a small rumble of chatter from those who had been allowed the privilege of observing the trial proceedings for that orn. His hands tingled. Whatever. Soon this little cyberfox hunt would be over. He would finagle some kind of cozy prison sentence for himself like Ratbat and a number of other Decepticons surely had and that would be that. The ideals that the Decepticons represented would never die. They would evolve. And when the time was right, they would rise up again, just as they had during the end of the so-called “Golden Age.

Suddenly he wrenched backward, crying out in his typical, high-pitched shrill as a multitude of images flashed in his mind’s eye.

“SUBJECT: STARSCREAM. GUILT ASSESSED. VERDICT: GUILTY,” a disembodied, computerized voice said, filling the trial chamber. Starscream huffed and struggled to regain his sense of orientation.

“All of these theatrics for that?” Starscream scoffed as his hands were released from the terminal.

“The prisoner will be silent,” Tyrest admonished.

“But I—“, Starscream began, before any further words could be formed, he felt a crippling surge of electricity course through his body, immediately shutting down anything he might have hoped to speak.

“The prisoner’s execution will commence in exactly one orn from determination of guilt.”

Starscream’s optics widened, looking up at Tyrest, then at the Autobots who were present. Some were staring directly at him, others were looking away.

“Wait, what?”

((Might try to work on this a little more regularly than once a year :P. Anyway, here's another piece.))

“We really gonna execute that trash?” Ironhide grumbled as he stepped out in to one of the ancillary corridors as Tyrest had called a recess to the proceedings only moments before. Other Cybertronians were also filing out of the chambers. Some would wait around for the next round of trials while others were keen just to get a taste before returning to the everyday normalcy of life on Cybertron that had been absent for so long now.

“I’ve never known Tyrest to not follow through on a sentence,” Kup said, a metallic walking stick in one hand to balance out the fact that he had all but lost the use of his right leg. Too much was breaking down. Too much decay. He had fought too hard and for too long. Even despite Ratchet’s best efforts, there were some things that were just not going to improve unless they transplanted his spark into a new body and the thought of that just gave the elder Autobot warrior a case of the surges like none other.

“Not sayin’ he don’t deserve it. Ah know he does, more’n most of ‘em, just dunno if it’s the right, uh. Right, uh….what’s th’ word…?”

“Precedent?”

“Yeh. Precedent we wanna be settin’,” Ironhide said, nodding, his optics looking down at the ground as he walked slowly through the corridors of Garrus-9 and the exterior of the Aequitas Chamber. To think that this was one of the most fortified prisons in the universe and now it had resumed its long-absent function as a court. Massacres had occurred on these grounds, and Ironhide couldn’t help but feel like they were on the verge of another one—only this time it would again be the Autobots who were responsible.

“Kinda surprised to hear this kinda talk from you, y’old rustbucket,” Kup said with a grin, keeping up with Ironhide’s own slightly limping gait as they walked the pristine hallways. “Figured you’d be wanting all those ‘Cons to get their just desserts.”

Ironhide regarded his long-time war buddy from his periphery for a few moments before looking back down at the ground as he walked.

“Yeah. Well, maybe the rust is settin’ into mah brain module. We lock ‘em all up, they’ll just escape. S’pose it’s prolly fer the best, y’know….this way.” Kup reached over and rested one hand on the shoulder of the red Autobot.

“It’s not perfect, lad, but nothin’ ever is. We’ll get past this and we’ll build the Cybertron we’ve been waiting for. The one you told me you saw that one time. It can finally happen now. The war’s over.”

Ironhide smiled. Finally.

“Yeah. The war’s over.”

From the chamber where his guilt had been assessed and determined by some sort of disembodied machine from a bygone age, Starscream had found himself unceremoniously dragged to the lower levels of the Autobot penal colony.

Jeers and insults were not the only thing being hurled at the former Seeker Commander and his Autobot escorts as they led him--now at least halfway willingly--through the penitentiary of the southern wing and towards the area that would be his final fate: the Rig. Bent, busted and burned Decepticon insignias or replicas thereof. Trash. Whatever an inmate, new or old, could get a hold of to leave their mark on the notorious Seeker Leader.

"Bet you never thought you'd see this day, eh Seeker trash?" Roadbuster growled. Starscream started to open his mouth to fire back a retort but the other Autobot guard seemed intent on beating him to the punch.

"Oh he did. He just thought he'd be where we are," Sandstorm said with a smirk, keeping a careful grip on the Seeker's right arm, pointless though it was with the energo-shackles around his wrists and legs. Every so often, the astute Seeker would dodge a particularly large piece of refuse that was hurled at him from one of the upper cells. They were Decepticons too. He couldn't understand what pleasure they derived from seeing him like this. Or the fate he was being marched off to face within an orn's time. It would be the same fate for most of them too, after all. The Autobots' commentary, at least, had finally brought his characteristic smirk back to the edges of his dark-gray steeled face.

"And what is your great reward, eh Autobots? You 'win'. We 'lose'. What now? The reestablishment of the lineage of Primes? Such a noble prize. How long, do you think, before the vaunted Optimus Prime and his oh-so-logical lieutenant Prowl begin seeing the wisdom of dividing you back up according to your pre-war talents, hm? How long before the caste systems that we Decepticons demolished when I slaughtered the senate begin to rear their ugly little heads again? How long before the two of you are spending your vorns standing sentry over libraries and running recon in the pleasant alleyways of Iacon with no hope of anything ever changing? Not long, I'd wager. Heheheh. No, not long at all."

The three mechs walked in relative silence for a few moments apart from the ongoing taunts from the other imprisoned Cybertronians.

"Slaggin' aft you sure do like to hear yourself talk, don'tcha?" Sandstorm said as they rounded a corner to the higher-security wing and the cells within. Several of them, too, were occupied, though their inhabitants were not as raucous.

"Welcome to your new home, Screamer. Least for the remainder of the orn," Roadbuster said, entering a security code that allowed the energy field to dissipate. Starscream's optics widened slightly.

"Wait, I thought we were going to the Rig!"

"Hah! Easy Seeker boy. You are. But you get to cool your jets here for a little bit. Like RB said...about an orn. Too long if ya ask me. Shoulda just triple-tapped you right there in the chamber once Aequitas told everybody what we all knew anyway."

Sandstorm deactivated the shackles and shoved the Seeker inside. Starscream whipped around, defiant. Sandstorm merely grinned.

"Please try something. We'd love it."

Starscream's smirk faded a little. Roadbuster and Sandstorm traded a quick glance and then re-energized the cell and started to walk away.

"Why're you so quiet, RB? Not what Starscream said, was it?"

Roadbuster looked over at his former Wrecker compatriot as they walked then returned his optics to the ground.

"Yeh. I guess a little. I mean, you don't think things are just gonna go back to how they were, do ya? The war's slag and all, but it wasn't that great before either."

"Go back?! Nah, man, we've got a whole future of opportunity waiting for us now. War's over! Freelance! Travel! Do whatever. It'll be great, RB. You'll see."

"Yeh? Yeah. I hope so."
