Twincast / Podcast Episode #74 "Charticon 2013"

by Tigertrack
"In my mind I'm going to Carolina..." which is unfortunately exactly how I experienced Charticon, but Podcasters Mike, Scotty, and Jon, as well as Bob were there for a first hand experience of the small convention scene, which turned out to be not quite so small, and they describe it to me, Matt, and for you, the listening audience to enjoy. This episode is available directly and in our RSS Feed and should appear on iTunes within 24 to 48 hours of this news post.

This episode of the Twincast has a couple of different pieces. The previously mentioned introduction by Counterpunch, Scotty P, Jon 3.0, and Tigertrack as we discuss small conventions, and Charticon specifically and some appropriate new news items like Generations Hoist and Thundercracker (and the other recently released Generations toys as well--check out the galleries!), the new Bot Shots reveals (cool new Soundwave!), and always relevant and reliable for a great discussion, the TRANSFORMERS COLLECTOR's CLUB and their sharing of the first full figure digital mock up of FSS 2.0 TREADSHOT and a secret scout-sized 7th character toy!

Also in this short first segment, these 4 guys (missing a guy and fries) also discuss KRE-O, retail release of Platinum Edition toys, and even touch on the comics a little as we discuss the recent 'Dark Cybertron' covers and what has interested us lately in comics.

Then, Part 2 of the podcast is a live recording from Charticon in North Carolina with podcasters Mike, Bob, and Scotty, and some other friends who joined them in discussions and fun.

Don't forget! The podcast is running a photo contest. We currently have two entries for this contest, so the rest of you need to pick up the slack, and show us your creativity, or you are just conceding that the two entries we have are THE MOST CREATIVE POSSIBLE...

See you around next time faithful listener, and thank you for listening to the podcast.

By the way, check out the image of Seibertron board member JRGReer74 and his awesome prize from CHARTICON! Congrats JRGreer74, many jealous board members salute you!

I'm all for contests!

Is there a contest thread somewhere that summarizes everything?

I'm listening to the podcast now, and imagine I'll pick up on it (as it was mentioned in the last podcast as well), but it would be good to see an official statement of contest rules, regulations, etc.

Bad JON 3.0 joke less than a minute in, that's gotta be a record.

The lighting issue was do to the fact that every room where the panels were held was on timers. I'm not too sure if the lighting timers were adjustable or not, but the lights cut off at an average time of about 30 minutes. It affected pretty much every panel. It may of been a little irritating, but I was more entranced with the guest speakers, so I really didn't pay attention to it until the voice actors panel. That one was pretty noticeable. Maybe next time they can check on setting the timers up, to allow the lights to stay on longer.

That picture is amazingly wonderful. I might make that my new Twitter avatar.

Post pictures in either this thread or the Episode 73 thread. Ryan has something to give away to whoever we determine is the winner (I think an IDW Deluxe, but could be wrong). I think it's only open to US residents for legal reasons?

Rik Alvarez, a former Hasbro Employee, was also there as a dealer. He was right next to the Radio Free Cybertron Booth.

Most people think they are repainting United Frenzy and Rumble into Eject and Rewind since Chromedome and one of Blaster's Cassettes were bestest buddies in the newest comic.

This was a great time, and the exclusives were AWESOME. That Aftershock is a piece of beauty.

I really had no frame of reference (having only been to Botcon in 2000 or 2001, whenever it was in Ft. Wayne), but I was expecting the dealer room to be much bigger. Captured Prey was the only vendor there with anything non-domestic or third party which was what I was looking for for the most part.

Hopefully the announcement today is that there will be a Charticon 2014!

I thought the dealer room was quite large given the size of the convention. BotCon is over 3000 people and Charticon was, I'm guessing, around 500? (I am sure someone knows the numbers.) Are you sure Captured Prey was the only table with non-domestic? I know I bought some Japanese-only releases at other tables. (However, you may not be counting dealers who had just a few pieces here and there but were primarily domestic-release dealers.)

It was a tough call, #CharticonArmy - this year's show was a great success and we've received an overwhelming amount of feedback and support from all of you, asking us to bring back another incredible event!

It's in that vein that we decided to do the next Charticon in 2015: to give our staff time to recuperate from all the planning for this year's show and to give us time to make sure the NEXT Charticon is even BETTER! We have some BIG THINGS planned for Charticon 2015, and we want to do it RIGHT for you guys!

"But what will we, the Charticon Army, do in the interim?" you ask! Do not despair! We will continue to keep the Charticon Community going and growing! We will have monthly Transformers meetups and are encouraging TF fans in other cities to do the same! We are rolling out a new #CharticonCommunities project, run by the fans FOR the fans called #CharticonSpotlight !

Down the pipeline, you can expect more planning by the Charticon staffers for 2015 and we'll continue to need YOUR input and support! We'll be organizing fundraising events through Indiegogo/Kickstarters, contacting more artists, voice actors and musicians, getting more vendors and planning more activities to make the next Charticon the BEST Transformers experience!

If you want to help the #CharticonArmy put on the best Charticon show yet in 2015, let us know how you want to help and we'll put you to work! Direct Message us on FB or email us at FeedTheCharticon@gmail.com

Damn, was hoping there'd be another next year. Gonna have to wait til 2015 now. :(

Me too. However, they do have regular meet-ups on Saturdays for Transformers fans. I would love to make the trip down sometime. Maybe some folks from the boards could plan a Transformers-trek (as opposed to a Star Wars Trek or the Star Trek Wars) next year around Charticon time? I already know there are a bunch of great people within driving distance and I would take the flight.

The preliminary results from the Razorclaw0000 "Yeah" Counter are in! In around 46 minutes of podcasting, Bob said the word "yeah" roughly 57 times. Drink up boys.

New drinking game: take a drink whenever someone mentions alcohol or getting drunk. #-o
I'm a first time listener here and...
Seriously guys, you need to cut back on "wasn't it awesome when we were drunk last week, bros?!" It's a little... meh. I mean, you guys were starting to remind me of those high school kids who sat around and talked about getting high.

I just think there are better things to discuss than how drunk you guys were at Charticon. For example, I loved the numbers you discussed about attendees and the story about the Landshark process (although I don't believe 5Below ever sold that mold, so I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that the organizers drove around and found discount Bulkheads).

The Charticon event recording itself was also pretty fun, save all the lame references to getting drunk and more beer.

Keep up the great work, guys! Just remember that things that seem funny when you're drunk aren't actually funny when you're sober. Or, to put it more eloquently: you don't need to get drunk or talk about getting drunk in order to do a good podcast.

EDIT: Intriguing contest... but you made no mention of the actual contest specifics. That might be one of the reasons few people are entering. I've seen other podcasts list details at the end (or somewhere in the middle), so either I missed it, or it's at the end (I'm 1:22 hrs in). I want to keep listening, but all the alcohol references are starting to annoy me. I was hoping for more TF talk, not party talk.

Real talk here...

Thank you for being a first time listener, but perhaps generalizing about a show that has been around for 3 years and that was doing a special recording of the festivities for your benefit is slightly unfair to those who took time to make it happen.

^This. I have listened to every episode for a little over 2 years and I have never found this to be an issue. It comes up every once in a while when a convention is discussed, but I personally enjoy knowing that the hosts are having a good time and doing one of the things you should be doing at a con....socializing. To me, it never felt particularly jocktacular or bro-riffic.

You're right as far as tables with some Japanese-only releases go. One vendor had a handful of Neo boxed items, and there was a smattering of Henkei here and there. If there was more than that I must have missed it. *Arrgh, there was a Virus there? Grr.

Not a big deal, but just not what I was expecting. I should ammend my post to something more along the lines of "The physical space was much smaller than I was expecting, but the sheer amount of product was much more than I had anticipated".

I'll just leave it at that since I don't want to say anything negative about Charticon at all. It was a fantastic experience. Bummed that I have to wait two years to visit again!

Another great episode! I wanted to weigh in as a non-attendee who got a few of the exclusives.

The Staff was very professional and prompt when it came to informing non-attendees about leftover exclusives and replying to emails. I had preordered a Charticon Exclusive Aftershock figure and was informed prior to shipping that some leftover Baleful (Spinister) heads were available for purchase. I emailed them asking to hold my order until i could send payment for the additional piece and they quickly replied that they were happy to do so. Payment was sent and in a no doubt rare occurrence, the site they used for shipping went down. This stalled the shippoing of all non-attendee parcels and they were quick to inform anyone who was waiting for them. A day or 2 later the site was back up and tracking numbers were sent out! My stuff arrived today and I must say, the Aftershock Set is top notch! It takes many queues from G1 and looks really sharp. My only complaint is that the box is taped and I can't decide if I want to open it or leave it as is. HAH.

I also like that aside from the Sharkticon figure, The varous other exclusives all had a central theme of Decepticon Targetmaster. Aftershock for Quake, Snipenose was the custom class figure for Needlenose, and they also had Baleful heads for Botcon Spinister!

All very clever!
