70 years ago today, 1 of the greatest military maneuvers ever conceived was put into motion to stop an incredible evil that spread across Europe. I understand that not a lot of people would think of this day as anything more than a page in a history textbook, but in truth it was probably the greatest show of courage in the face of incredible odds in our history. I just wanted to post this to remind people what June 6th, 1944 means, or should mean, to us. Of course, I can only type from what I have learned, I wasn't there. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to face down hundreds of machine gun nests as I tried to run through the water onto the beach and not get killed. But the people who did it 70 years ago today did it for their freedom and most likely for ours as well. Can you imagine what would have happened if Nazi Germany had won the war? The 3rd Reich may not have lasted 70 years, and it may not have affected America as much as it did Europe, but things would have definitely been different. I was born in Europe and am part German, and I shudder to think what would have happened to me if I had been born into that world. So for myself, and for all of us who enjoy our freedoms (or whatever freedoms some of our oppressive governments allow us to have) I want to honor the veterans of the Normandy invasion, alive and dead, by simply saying thank you for your service. I hope, if faced with a similar situation, I could have done it.

Also, I understand Hollywood often over-dramatizes these kinds of situations, but if you haven't seen it yet, the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan is a really jarring presentation of the Normandy invasion.
