They're giant cats that turn into a giant robot, a la Power Rangers.

After Transformers hit everybody and their mom were looking for giant Mecha cartoons to cash in on. Thus Voltron was born. Seriously lets start with what we all should know.
There were supposed to be three different Voltrons; near, middle, and far Earth. The series they were based on were Go-Lion (Lion Voltron) Dairugger XV (vehicle) and Light Speed God Algebas (Gladiator). From what I can tell the Gladiator Voltron was never made into a series. Go-Lion and Dairugger XV were made by the same company who created Super Sentai AKA Power Rangers.
Although each series kept close to the source material of the parallel Japanese Anime, parts of Dairugger XV were strung together between both series to show cohesion.
Most of the explicit violence and Christian symbolism was removed due to US censorship laws and concerns that non Christians would be alienated. This includes covering up the death of Lance, one of the original 5 lion pilots.
The Lion Voltron is considered the most popular Voltron by far, in fact when you say Voltron most people think of the Lions.
Both Go-Lion and Dairugger XV were released in America before Voltron under the Godakin line. Much like some Diaclone toys found their way into the US before Transformers.

I've never actually seen Voltron(wouldn't mind someday), but here's a few tidbits from an old issue of "Anime' Insider":
-The Lion Voltron was so popular that a 20 episode second season was created exclusively for America. They said that the animation was done by a Korean company, and it was of lower quality than the original series.
-In 1989, a one-hour Voltron "movie" was produced, titled "Voltron: The Fleet of Doom". For the first time, it united both the vehicle and lion Voltrons against the Drule super-fleet. According to the article, much of the animation was taken from existing episodes of Golion and Dairugger, with new footage being of low quality.
-In 1998, an all CG series called "Voltron: The Third Demension" was created.
-Some of Albegas toys ended up in the Voltron figure line.
Hope I added something of interest, cause as I said, I've never seen Voltron.

It was Sven. In the original anime, Sven was killed, and Voltron Force met up with his brother later on. In the American series, Sven was only injured, and transfered to a hospital planet, and the group met up with Sven later on, rather than his brother.

Yeah it was Sven. My bad, it's weird but early 80's anime had a habit of killing off a lot of characters.

An over censored show that had silly changes and bad editing....remember Uhrak throwing his sword at nothing?
Or off duty soldiers having 'vitamin rich' fruit juice?

I got a few of the DVD sets that came out recently and some of these episodes are PAINFUL to watch.....especially with the male voice actors doing rolls of the chicks....and badly.
I wanna see unedited Go-lion myself.
And I liked the Vehicle Voltron alot better than the over-rated lion force.

I had almost forgotten about Nanny and there she was. Who did female voices on the show? I'm embarrassed to say I never noticed. I heard somewhere that ADV is going to release the original Go-Lion soon so there ya go.

BJ Wards did Allura and a few other female characters, but quite a few of the male Voice actors did female characters.....and badly.....made the Monty Python guys in drag sound much better

I liked the Vehicle Voltron series since there were alot of interesting twists and no one was really evil or really good and had some interesting ideas, especially for an 80's series. Where as Lion force the good guys were all good and the villians was all evil.

Personally, my favorite was the Lion Force Voltron. Sure, some of the voices for the female characters were pretty bad, but it was a great show and Princess Allura was a serieous hottie.

How is Voltron gay? Did Voltron have consenting sexual intercourse with a member of Voltron's gender?

Scarey thought, especially since Voltron isn't even sentient, It's a piloted robot. I have to agree with Shadowman here. How is
Voltron gay? It was agreat show, probably one of my favorites at the time.

Wasn't the original Go-Lion a sentient robot until he was broken down by the angle?

That I couldn't tell you since all I'm familiar with is [b]Voltron[/i], not the original Japanese
GoLion.
