Blue ray disk in a dvd player = no game.
Dvd in a blue ray player = 99% sure it will work. Kinda like a dvd player can read old Cd's as well

Second and just about all Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players will also upscale your current dvds to anything upto 1080p(protected cables only,eg vga, dvi, hdmi). Your upscaled dvds won't look as good as the hd-dvd/bluray releases but the difference in quality, especially at 720p is very small unless running on a 46"+ tv.

Curses my plan was to Buy 300 now and Blu-ray player alot later down the line. But it looks like I'll just have to get the DVD.

Screw Sony and their Blu-Ray. May they be the BETA of the 2000s.

I don't plan on upgrading to anything else until a few years from now. Let all of the next-gen DVD technology wars rage on, all the while the regular DVDs drop in drop like VHS did. :)

Same here. I'll just kick back and wait for all the prices to drop on HD and BluRay players and movies. I'm cool with regular dvd's for now.

Plus, I don't want take the gamble on which will make it and which will become the beta. Murphy's Law has it in for me.

Why buy 300 on Blu-Ray, the HD-DVD version has better extras and has the dvd 1 disc version on the other side of the disc so you can use it in a standard player.

The HD-DVD version has picture in picture presentation of the film before and after the special effect were added, something Blu-Ray is currently incapable of doing which is why I prefer HD-DVD. The only thing Blu-Ray can do that HD-DVD can't is use java applications for crappy minigames etc.

I am not biased towards either format as I have a HD-DVD player and access to a Blu-Ray player(bros PS3) and in terms of picture quality there is no difference as the extra space for Blu-Ray has only been used for uncompressed audio and alternate streams so far.

So let see if I get this straight the HD-DVD either comes with or is playable in a standard DVD player?

Many HD-DVD's are double sided. One side contains the HD version and it's extras and the other side has the regular DVD version on it.

Can either version play other regions DVD's? Photo CD's or VCD's? Or, will there have to be an after market mod and void the warrenty.

HD-DVD is region free. Blu-Ray is split into 3 regions, A - North America + Japan, B - all Pal territories, C - rest of world. Both types of player keep the dvd regions for dvd playback though but cheap region free dvd players that can play VCDs and photo cds are a dime a dozen.

Muffin thanks for answering that question for me as I'm just back after a few days in Spain.

I think that answers my question. However, to clarify; HD DVD will play all regions DVD's and Blu-Ray won't.

Primarily, I want to know if either of these will play my DVD's that are for different regions, not what their DVD's will be as regions.

No, at the moment both players are currently region locked for dvd except if your a sneaky git and score an Xbox 360 HD-Dvd add on from another region on Ebay. W00t for dirt cheap US HD-DVD add-on  .

Thanx man. I currently have a modified DVD player that will play all. I'm not too happy about the new formats. However, if one was going to play all region's DVD's, then I might have leaned more that way.

I'm still considering getting one of these formats. I was originally backing HD-dvd (and still am), but it looks like Blu-ray may be taking the lead. The option I'm considering is getting a really cheap HD-DVD player and use that until a dual format player becomes affordable in a few years. Luckily for me, I have an HDTV hooked up to my PC and the XBox360's HD-DVD drive can be used on a PC with minor tweaking.
