August 20th: 30th anniversary of Voyager 2 space craft (aka Golden Disk Day)

Today is the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Voyager 2 spacecraft which is kind of a special day in the Transformers mythos. Some of you might be wondering how this bit of news made it into Seibertron.com's Transformers news section. The Voyager spacecrafts each carry a special "golden disk". According to Transformers lore, the disks were discovered in the future by Beast Wars Megatron.

Wikipedia wrote:The Voyager Golden Record is a phonograph record included in the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. It contains sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. It is intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or far future humans, that may find it. The Voyager spacecraft will take about 40,000 years to come near another star, 'near' meaning in this case within around 1.7 light-years' distance; hence, if other beings do not come in the direction of the spacecraft to meet them, it will take at least that long for the Golden Record to be found.

Wikipedia wrote:In the Transformers series Beast Wars, the Golden Disk stolen by the Predacons was in fact the Voyager Record. This disk was prized by the Transformer race, as it alone told the location of Earth and thus a plentiful source of Energon. The disk also contained a secret message from the original Megatron. The record was destroyed by Dinobot to prevent the Predacon Megatron from having the ability to change the future. However, Megatron recovered a piece of the disk, so that the Decepticon-turned-Predacon Ravage would join his side after watching the message left by his former commander.

Here are some other interesting links pertaining to the Voyager spacecraft:

So without further ado, let's all have an Energon drink in honor of the 30th Anniversary of the Voyager 2 spacecraft's launch! Anyone else up for calling today "Golden Disk Day"?

When Megs is explaining to Rampage about the mountain. Before he puts it in his holoreader, you can see the Sounds of Earth side. I just thought it was an easter egg referencing them old Vynal thingies.

I guess I'm an idiot... I didn't realize the Golden Disc was based on a real item...

There's another catch to this too, isn't there?

IIRC, the record was inside a larger case (which also had writing on it) for protection from the elements. What you see be lugged around through the first half of the series then is actually the big thick case, and that scene w/ Rampage is the first time Megs actually pops the record out of the case.

I think.

So, if the ship was sent out in 1977, and the disc probably made in 1975 or 1976, and the passengers on the Ark were awoken in 1984, how did G1 Megatron get the message on the disc?

Was this ever talked about?

And how did BW Megatron get the disc?

Or do i just chalk that up to another "just be quiet and enjoy the cartoons!!"?

That little satalite sure does get around huh!?!

Does anyone else fear another crossover if the assorted writers catch wind of this thread?

If im not mistaken Ravage in BW explanes it. From the way it was stated Megatron did it after he woke up. It was in case the Decepticons lost the war. I have the feeling that Soundwave found out about the disc and Megatron had Skywarp fly him to it so he could inscribe the message on the disc. If im not mistaken the voyager was still in our solar system when the Transformers woke up.

If the flashback is anything to go by, the satellite was out by Saturn when Megs inscribed the message. Guess it can't have gotten too far in those 7 years.

Also wouldn't it make some sense that his sparks interaction with BW Megatron could have left a notion to inspire him to do this.

That always made some sense to me because "TRANSWARP" technology wasn't part of G1, they had space bridged and dimesional rift gadgets, but not "TRANSWARP" as Megatron states is being developed. How else could he imagine it would have a time altering quality to it :-?

Probably not. V'Ger = Voyager 6, while it was, what, Voyager 2 that got the treatment in BW?

Lets just hope that the info we gave away on the Golden disks never come back to bite us on the butt, like it nearly did in Beast Wars!

I think that time travel is an inherent part of the transwarp technology, so intrical that even the bare beginnings of research let G1 Megatron know about it.
