Dragon Ball Z Feature to Shoot in Montreal?
Source: The Gazette September 4, 2007
The Gazette has posted unconfirmed news on the Dragon Ball Z movie at 20th Century Fox:
The 20th Century Fox studio is expected to shoot three big-budget movies in Montreal over the next year; each has a budget of at least $100 million. The films are the Night at the Museum sequel Another Night, Independence Day director Roland Emmerich's remake of the sci-fi flick Fantastic Voyage and a big-screen adaptation of the Japanese manga Dragonball Z.
Dragonball Z is adapted from the manga created by Akira Toriyama; the work was also turned into a Japanese anime series that played all over the world. It tells the story of an alien sent to destroy Earth, who has a change of heart and decides to join the humans in their fight against various aliens and bad guys.
There are no details yet as to when these three shoots will begin, but they are expected to wrap production by next July.
ok so i know theres of DBZ haters well please for the sake of keeping this friendly if u dont like it then dont post.
so anyways this movie was announced several yrs ago with rumors of actors and a leaked working script online. and then fox just dumped it and said nothing more. DBZ isnt my first anime series but it is one of my favorite classics. i knwo there are far greater animes out there i dont care. i like akiras way he tells stories and his chars, art everything the man does is amazing. hes one of my personal art heroes. after seeing how crazy kung fu can be done in the matrix movies and how amazing the TF movie came out now is the perfect time for this movie more then ever. all i gotta say is fox better not screw it up..DBZ is almost as old as TF and prob has just as big of a fan base.

Ahhh if they could do it right I would definetly be for a big screen version. Jet Li as vegeta... Goldberg as Nappa.
Interesting to see what will come of this.

and it was up in the aid for goku wiht brendon fresure(sp? from the mummy series) and tom wellington(sp? from smallville) they were gonna prob have a near alstar cast. they wanted the black guy from stargate sg1 as piccolo and all the animals/non human chars like king kai were gonna be cgi and using the voice actors from the anime. and also the head producer of the DB anime was gonna be part of it to see that it goes good

I'm still not sure whether the 'A' is a flame or a hairpiece.

It sort of reminds me of Vegeta's hair...
Anyway! I'm real interested to see how this actually turns out. There are so many characters in DBZ. I hope they use the good ones.

This movie is going to bomb, and it's going to be hilarious.
I'm a fan of the cartoon.
But honestly, how could they make a live action movie?
The hype for Dragonball Z died long, long ago.
Not to mention, the story is going to be crap.
"Alien comes to earth to destroy earth. Goku screams at alien for hours on end to power up, they fight, they fight so quick it's just blurs so you can never see whats actually going on. Goku wins, they all scream for a few more hours to power up in celebration, they collect the dragonballs and use them to wish for a pony"
I don't think there is any possible way this movie will turn out even remotely good.

Gotta agree with Hugo here. I like Dragonball Z as well, but I'm not sure how well it would transfer to a live action 2 hour movie.
Mind you, I bought a live action movie DVD of Devil Man (which is an anime by Go Nagai) on a whim and I was surprised on how I enjoyed it. So maybe the movie could turn out ok, I dunno.

This will suck!
Don't get me wrong I love DB and wish it would have ended better, but still, it will suck.
I've been wayting for this atleast for 5 years now, and have the same thoghts as back then, it will suck!
I mean the anime isn't as good as the manga, so what do you expect the film will be like, as hugo said they'll shout ateacvh other and say how they attack, then they'll stop in midair and talk about something call them selves names and fight again.
And just think how they will look like....
But maybe it'll be just as the manga, a parody on everything.

I hope they find a way to make it work, because when I was 14/15 I thought DBZ was awesome! [/nostalgia]
They could cut out on a good story (like Transformers) and just turn it into an insane action-flick with special effects to blow your mind.
That could do the trick
They have to keep the z-fighters in their original look though, no bay-fighters or crap like that hehehe

see the thing most ppl dont know or seem to under stand is during the fighting scenes the reason why 1 fight lasted like 13 eps is cuz theoreticly their going so fast that about 2-4 eps equals like 1 real time min in their fight....also for the sake of the show they had to make it longer so akira could keep up with drawing the mangas. they would make the shows so quick they caught up to the mangas and since the show was based on the mangas had to wait so there were more.

Actually, the reason a fight would take so long, is because they were trying to stay behind Toriyama, who, at the time, was still writing the manga. A lot like Naruto.

I agree with these guys..
Bombus distinguendus I and a co-worker always joke about the long drawn out fight scenes and how silly they can be.

To me it's no less silly than Megatron's insanely stupid plans which always result in him getting his ass kicked in the most simplest of ways in every single episode of G1.

I'm fairly certain you're talking about Cobra Commander.
In the cartoon, he had a number of more insane and stupid plans to take over the word. Like carving his face into the moon. Making a machine that burnt all the worlds money. And posing as girl scouts selling cookies with mind control chips inside so they can take over the world with an army of mindless drones.

Would you guys prefere this movie to be an original script, or the live action version of one of the movies or sagas?

Personally, I'd prefer something original. Cartoon Network pretty much ruined any effort on my part to watch DBZ over again, since they burned that crap into my skull by showing each saga for 4 months straight then starting over when new episodes were coming out.
Something original would be nice, but then, they gave Broderick's Godzilla an original story, and well, we all know how that turned out.

Do you have any ideas for an original movie plot for DBZ?

I never watched GI Joe as a kid, but that does sound very stupid

Nope, although can you do anything original with Dragonball Z?
Unless Goku fights super powered nazi's from the planet Nazionia who want the Earth's Dragonballs so they can bring back to life their king and ruler of the galaxy Hitler-tron 5000, who is bent on killing all the aliens due to over population and dumping them into Hawaii's volcanoes.

I'm with Senior Hugo I dont think DBZ will work With Hollywood F'n up franchises left and right whats the probability that they'll get this right. Plus the canon for DBZ is so rediculous I find myself saying HUNH and I follow the show. Also When the 1st Saga in DBZ takes place alot of the characters are established. Also If they do this I think the general cast should be asain. And not Jet Li he can barely speak english.

Yeap. Then people wonder why Cobra never won. Strategic planning at its' finest.
