So, I'm soooo sick that I actually e-mailed my prof yesterday afternoon and told him I wouldn't be able to make it to class this morning. I was really worried about missing my favorite unit in the class, but when I wake up late this morning, this is in my inbox:

Dr. Montgomery wrote:In case you haven't heard yet. There is a bomb threat on campus. Given the bomb threat is in the building of our class and the fact that we are not permitted to have class until 10:30, there will be no class today. See you Thursday.

UMR CANCELS ALL CLASSES FOR TUESDAY, FEB. 27

ROLLA, Mo. -- All classes at the University of Missouri-Rolla have been cancelled for Tuesday, Feb. 27, due to a threat affecting the Butler-Carlton Civil Building on campus.

Classes should resume Wednesday, Feb. 28. All non-essential employees are asked to remain off campus today, Feb. 27. Employees currently on campus in a safe location may remain on campus.

At approximately 2:32 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, UMR Police Department responded to a call regarding a UMR student who was threatening terrorist type actions. The student was apprehended at UMR’s Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Building located on Pine Street in Rolla by the UMR Police Department and is now in custody and is being questioned by law enforcement officials.

The Civil Engineering Building has been evacuated and the City of Rolla has activated the Mobile Command Center to respond to this situation. The roads near the Civil Engineering Building, Including12th Street to 16th on Pine Street and Vichy Road and St. Pat’s Road, have been closed with detour signs. Please use alternative routes.

Law enforcement agencies are investigating this incident. In addition to the Rolla Police Department, Rolla Fire Department and UMR Police Department, the Missouri Highway Patrol and FBI are also on the scene. In addition St. Patrick Catholic School has also canceled classes.

The Fort Leonard Wood Explosive Operations Division is currently investigating the possibility that a bomb may be located in the Civil Engineering Building.

The Rolla Fire Department Weapons of Mass Destruction team has set up a decontamination unit on 16th Street south of Pine to decontaminate eight UMR students, one professor and 14 other individuals who were in the building at the time the suspect was apprehended. A white powdery substance was found on the suspect that is currently being investigated along with possible bomb materials. The unit was activated as a precautionary measure until the substance can be determined.

Students are advised to call 573-341-MINE (573-341-6467) or check the UMR website for updates. Faculty and staff may call 573-341-7888 for updates as well.

For more information please call Scott Grahl, Communications Coordinator for the City of Rolla, at (573) 426-6943 or Mary Helen Stoltz, Manager of Public Relations at UMR, at (573) 578-6303.

That reminds me of the good olds days when there was a bomb threat at my old high school like every other month or so.

Well, that sounds like a novel way to miss class.

Seriously, though, hope it gets handled without anyone getting hurt.

This kind of stuff never happens at Mizzou. You know why there are bomb threats at Rolla? not enough girls man.

Yet another reason why UMC is Better than UMR.

The only reason why UMC could possibly be Better than UMR.

Fixed. 8)

Anyway, my sister called and said she heard a stungun was involved, but didn't know if it belonged to the suspect or the cops.

I am inclined to assume the cops tased the guy, but RPD has a reputation for reaching for their handguns before their tasers.

Middle of the night, international student, twitchy backwater 'cops'... I'm surprised they didn't kill him.

lim (UMR) = Mizzou
G.P.A -> 0.0

As a girl at UMR, I can say, I find the ratio of Guys:Girls to be quite nice.

Woohoo no class! UMR has canceled class a total of 2 times in my career. (~5 years) Screw snow & ice, the students can make it!

You Rolla kids. Please. Rolla is a white spot on the highway. Columbia is a real city with a downtown, mall, and actual things to do! Plus the Residence Halls at Rolla are in the worst shape, a buddy of mine said he went there for a tour and a window literally fell out of the frame.

Plus, none of the Res Halls there have their own Official Jedi.

And hey, our RHA is much better than yours. Hell our MSA is better than yours. We're also better looking.

Wait, I thought we were talking about UMC versus UMR, not Columbia versus Rolla.

And what loser tolerates living in one of the res-halls for more than the minimum required time any way? :-P

Oh, and the older UMR res-halls that are so crappy? They're the handiwork of UMC Civil Engineers (they couldn't afford to hire UMR alumni); no wonder TJ North is sliding into a sink hole.

Update:

CLASSES TO RESUME WEDNESDAY

ROLLA, Mo. – Classes at the University of Missouri-Rolla will resume tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 28), after a threat affecting the civil engineering building forced officials to close the campus today.

A UMR student has been arrested because of the incident, which sparked concerns about a possible bomb and anthrax contamination. Late this afternoon, law enforcement officials were able to determine that those threats were false.

Twenty three individuals, including eight UMR students and one professor, were quarantined for several hours while investigators determined the source of a white powdery substance that was found on the suspect. All 23 individuals were released this afternoon after the substance was determined to be ordinary powdered sugar.

The student’s identity has not been released because charges have not been filed at this time.

MAn, I was really hoping it would take them another 24 hours to be sure. :P

Bum-f*** middle of nowhere town in Minnesota. Of course most of them were pranks by other students, but there was one actual real bomb threat that I remember that was pretty scary.
