A question for those of you that buy comics.

The comic shop near my closed recently. And the only other ones in town are too far away for me consistently visit. Do any of you use the subscriptions available on http://www.marvel.com?

Most importantly: how badly does the mail service beat up your comics???

If you subscribe to Iron Man or X-Men I would especially love to hear from you.

Thanks in advance,
I.P.

NO NO NO

DO NOT use Marvel subscriptions

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER!!

Unless you want to get your comics:
1. in VF or much worse condition every month(they come in a bag with a very flimsy piece of posterboard for security). More often then not it gets folded in HALF or worse!! I got one with the part of the back cover missing once!

2. You will get your comics at least 3 weeks LATER than everyone else.

I tried it TWICE. Once in the early nineties and once about 2 years ago(because it was free). Nothings changed.

Don't do it. Don't even consider it. Your headaches will far outweigh having to drive a little further to a different comic store. TRUST ME!

I subscribed to Iron Man obviously BTW.

Oh, and another GREAT thing about Marvel subscriptions, if there is ever a special issue or a foil cover or anything like that YOU WON'T GET IT. They will send you the freaking NEWSTAND edition!! I'm serious!!

On the plus side, Marvel subscriptions are cheap--twenty bucks a year, as opposed to the $36+ you'd spent buying them one at a time, over the ~$40 you'd spend buying the trades.

I have had subscriptions through IDW publishing and they are kind with the comics. They put the comic in a plastic cover with cardboard backing. Then they have put mine in padded envelopes.

Lucky for me I have a comic shop right beside the place where I work. The guy sells everything from Magic Cards, to Japanese import figures like the Kissplay Transformers. I don't buy anything from either of those lines but it's good to know of a place.

I do not do the mail subscriptions anymore...I have only one comic book store in my region and they will get what I want.

How far is too far? Any decent comic store will offer an in-store subscription/hold service. Any good comic store that's actually worth dealing with will let you pick up your pulls on a once-a-month basis if you need to.

I used to use the NICE program at milehighcomics.com. They were very good. I only quit them to give my lcs more business.
