Hullo all,

I asked this with no immediate success on the General Discussion, but where (and why) did the Philosopher's Forum go?

It must've been one helluva flame war. Pity I missed it really. :-?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

At some point, the reasonable debate stopped, and people just started bashing other people's beliefs.

The PhiloForum has been cordoned off for months already... And this question has been asked loads of times too....
It's beacuse people started flaming about religion etc, etc..
So it got out of control.

 So... in essence... people complained about being criticised.

In a philosophy forum.

#-o That's the point, even if it is just in the form of "LUL U" "NO U" 'arguments'. Oh well. Nothing like a bout of raving idiocy to ruin the day. Thanks for the answer, people.

The problem as I see it is that topics were no longer questions. The idea of the philosopher's forum was for us to ask provacative questions that make other members really think about the nature of things and question what you know to be true. But then threads like "Islam must be stopped" came up. The thread was a statement, not a question. And so the only response that the poster wanted was one that supports the given statement. It wasn't open to discussion.

If Ryan gives us the philosopher's forum back, I suggest that he imposes a rule that threads must be questions, not statements. I think a rule like that would help significantly and keep all threads open to discussion.

It's still too difficult to maintain and could get out of hand again.

The Philosopher Forum is too contronverisal to discussed. Even if the Philosopher Forum is coming back. It'll be a flame war all over again.

It's a shame... I really enjoyed reading what everyone had posted. I was learning a little something everytime I visited that forum.

Flame war or differing opinions?

If anything you shouldn't step foot into the Philospher's Forum if you weren't prepared to debate your opinions.

If you're easily upset by someone disagreeing with you, then stay out, and definitely don't run to a Mod about it.

I think if a lot of people were a little less sensitive and open to the opinions of others the PF wouldn't have gotten so bad. Sure, there were a few bad apples, but the best way to deal with bad apples like that is to not bite into them. The majority of the time it's what they want.

I concur, my friend. I too felt educated. Not always in the way of facts but often in the way of people's thoughts and arguments.

One of the problems is that a lot of people could not, or perhaps refused, to see things from other people's points of view.

If we could all turn around, and say "You know, I'm an atheist, but yeah, I can see your reason for believing in God, but I don't and here's why" and "I can see why you wouldn't believe in God, but I happen to be a die-hard Christian, and I respectfully disagree, and here's why."

But no, instead it was a Michael Moore vs. Bill O'Reilly Slugfest.

The thought of Bill O'Reilly being gay could destroy even the most powerful of supercomputers.

But I bet he'd (She?) have severe emotional scarring. From Conservative Daddy and Liberal Daddy always fighting, from both Daddies yelling at him (Her?) to accept their beliefs, which border on sitcom-level in difference. Oh, and from having two daddies.

I really think that there some political and religious debate and arugment are just too unstable to be discussed. I don't want to offend and start a flame war. Look, here my opinion about the flame war and differ opinion across. When they start a politicial or religious topic and one people believe this and other believe it differently. That making an opinion. However when two people aruge about the topic like one person believe they humans are created evolution by gorillas but one person believe that humans are created by divine intervention of the deity. And they start to aruge and offend they theory is big bunch of nonsense and stuff like that.

Well, at least thread explained the broken link; shall we resort to settling our differences through custom configured autonomous robots smashing each other?

Great, we're all agreed. Slag-fest it is.

the short of it is, i asked a bunch of christians to prove i wasn't an all knowing all powerful god pretending to be a man, and kinda broke the forum.
