The reason Venom died from a Pumpkin Bomb and not the Goblin is because the Goblin was genetically enhanced. Eddie, though, was not. Harry had more physical endurance than Eddie, if only because of the Goblin Serum.
And remember what happened to the Board Members in the first movie? The ones at the World Unity Festival? Vaporized, much like Eddie.

Don't tell me, tell the guy who made it!
Plus Venom is vulnerable to heat.

Unless the Goblin Serum recodes you with Kryptonian DNA, I don't think it would make you durable enough to survive a blast shown to instantly vaporize flesh.
I'm leaning toward the two-bombs theory - a close range thermal grenade, and a more expensive, large area-of-effect, gamma grenade or something.

They actually turned into skeletons first.

Indeed, I haven't watched the DVD yet, but I remember it from the big-screen.

Definitely two different grenades: the one that is simply an explosive grenade, that Spiderman was also attacked with in the first movie, and the one that vaporizes its targets. Though....it stands to reason that if Spiderman wasn't scarred by the bomb, Harry shouldn't have been either. They were both VERY close to the explosion, yet with different results.

There's also one that sends out the flying slicey things, if I remember right.

That one is my favorite one especially the scene of it in the first movie.

Even though the final showdown between Goblin and Spidey in the first movie wasn't heavy on the special effects, it's my favorite final battle. The first time I saw it, it was such an "oh sh*t!" moment when that pumpkin bomb was tossed at Spidey.
