The "Flags of our Fathers" thread is not about that movie, but about your country's Flags meaning.

Just post a pic of your flag and explain what it means.

First of mine, from Germany:

Image

The colors mean this:
Black for the darkness of slavery

Red for the blood which was spilled to fight the slavery

Gold for the golden light of freedom

Basecly this was designt after Germany fought of the French, which came in and basecly defeated the Germans, making them slaves.
Germany fought back and freed itself, then the flag was droped to be replaced by the Kaiser flag, which was then replaced by the swastika, which was dropped after the war just so the one you see me posting here could return.

so what's your's and it's story?

Oh if I read just one bit of flaming here, I will let the mods close it and tell on everybody who toke part in it.

My country tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty.
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died.
Land of the pilgrim's pride.
From every mountainside,
Let freedom ring.

I got most of this info from Wikipedia and there is much more here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_flag

First the 50 white stars represent the 50 states of the Union.
The 13 horizontal red and white stripes stand for the original 13 colonies that rebelled against the British during the Revolution.

President George Washington is credited with having said once that, "We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty."

A book about the flag published by the Congress in 1977 states: "The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun."

Also: "White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; Blue signifies Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice."
The red also signifies to many the blood of those who gave there lives for freedom.

United States Army Institute of Heraldry actually has designs for the flag if any more states are added.
The designs go up to 56 states.

Sorry for such a long post. :D

NZL's doesn't mean a hell of a lot:

New Zealand Flag Meaning:
The Union Jack represents New Zealand's British Commonwealth heritage. The Blue background symbolizes the sea and sky. The four stars symbolizing the constellation 'the Southern Cross', represent the stars Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. The Southern Cross is a prominent constellation in the southern hemisphere, and represents New Zealand's geographical position to the rest of the world.

Ahh, but do you know it's name? (*answer at bottom)

My pick: Jolly Roger
Image

There's a breakdown here:http://www.cosmosmith.com/jolly_roger.html

However, here’s a real breakdown.

If a person worked for the British, French, Spanish, or the Dutch, during the high age of Western colonial conquest, the worked was next to nothing. Usually the captain took a majority share of everything and the rest of the sailors were left hanging (sometimes quite literally). Whereas, a sailor can join a pirate ship and get a even cut of al the profits. Women, had power and there were better conditions on pirate ships.

Now this is all subjective, however, I recommend that anybody who is interested should read Villains of all nations.

Yep.

Actually it's just the Flag of the United States of America.
It's refered to as both the Stars and Stripes and Old Glory.

I live in America. You think I don't know it's name? /:)

My Flag is the flag of Puerto Rico

Image

For years I thought that my people were just to lazy to design our own flag because it seemed that we stole the design from Cuba but a few years back I learned that our flag was created in 1895, by the Puerto Rican section of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, which advocated independence for Puerto Rico and Cuba from Spanish rule. The design of the PR flag is the same as the Cuban flag, but with the colors inverted.

Before 1952, police arrested anyone displaying the PR flag on charges of insubordination against the United States. When Puerto Rico became a Commonwealth that year, the flag became the island's official emblem.

Here is the flag of Cuba so you can see how simular they are.

You would be surprised on how ignorant many people in our nation are to our history and the name of our flag.

Yo! Poohy Ol' Negare, does your flag have a name, and do you know the name of the Brtish flag?(hint, there's a Marvel Comix character named after him)

Also, any Brits or UK'rs want to chime in?

Going a little more local:

I salute the flag of Virginia,
with reverence and patriotic devotion
to the ‘Mother of States and Statesmen,’
which it represents—the ‘Old Dominion,’
where liberty and independence were born.

Image
The Seal of Virginia against a blue background; this particular flag was adopted in 1861; the Seal itself was adopted in 1776.
For more information on the Seal itself, see here.

Yeah, I guess you're right.
From what I've seen, each generation seams to get less and less patiotic. Pretty pathetic actually.

My flag. At least one of them. Is the flag of Greece.

The flag of Greece (Greek: Σημαία της Ελλάδος, popularly referred to as the Γαλανόλευκη or the Κυανόλευκη, the "blue-white") is based on nine equal horizontal stripes of blue alternating with white. There is a blue canton in the upper hoist-side corner bearing a white cross; the cross symbolises Greek Orthodoxy, the established religion of the people of Greece. According to popular tradition, the nine stripes represent the nine syllables of the phrase "Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος" ("Freedom or Death", " E-lef-the-ri-a i Tha-na-tos"), the five blue stripes for the syllables "Έλευθερία" and the four white stripes "ή Θάνατος". There is also a different theory, that the nine stripes symbolize the nine Muses, the goddesses of art and civilization (nine has traditionally been one of the numbers of reference for the Greeks).[1] The official flag ratio is 2:3.[2]

The blazon of the flag is Azure, four bars Argent; the canton Azure with a Greek cross throughout Argent. The shade of blue used in the flag has varied throughout its history, from light blue to dark blue, the latter being increasingly used since the late 1960s.

The above patterns were officially adopted by the First National Assembly at Epidaurus on 13 January 1822. Blue and white have many interpretations, symbolizing the colors of the famed Greek sky and sea (combined with the white clouds and waves), traditional colors of Greek clothes in the islands and the mainland, etc.

This is the flag of my beloved country Malaysia.
The flag of Malaysia, also known as the Stripes of Glory, comprises a field of 14 alternating red and white stripes along the fly and a blue canton bearing a crescent and a 14-point star known as the Federal Star. The 14 stripes, of equal width, represent the equal status in the federation of the 13 member states and the federal government, while the 14 points of the star represent the unity between these entities. The crescent represents Islam, the country's official religion; the yellow of the star and crescent is the royal colour of the Malay rulers; the blue canton symbolizes the unity of the Malaysian people. This blue canton was originally chosen to represent a connection between the federation and the Commonwealth but this was gradually downplayed and eventually supplanted by its current interpretation.

Though its design is similar to the British East India Company and of the flag of the United States, no substantive connection to either flag has been established.

In blazon, the Malaysian flag is described as: "A banner Gules, seven bars Argent; the canton Azure charged with decrescent and mullet of fourteen points Or." This means "a red flag with seven horizontal white stripes; the upper-left (hoist) quarter is blue with a yellow waning crescent (i.e. horns pointing to sinister) and a yellow 14-pointed star."
