My little trip to the ER...

This morning started out just like every other Monday until about 6:00 am.. I started having tightening of the chest, chest pains, pain in my jaw and back.. Well when the pain did not go away after a few minutes I stated to worry so I did some searching on the net to see if maybe I could get a grip on what was happening..
Well my symptoms showed the signs of a heart attack....
I left work and went to the ER at Oschner where I was admitted almost instantly.
My blood pressure was 169 / 102 and they gave me some nitro glycerin pills to bring down my pressure.
After a day of being stuck with needles, multiple X-rays a stress test and lack of food I found out that it is a combo of reflux and blood pressure.
The suggested I keep the appointment I have next week to have my blood work done and hinted about "POSSIBLE" causes for the blood pressure..
I don't smoke
I don't drink
I don't eat unhealthy
There is no history of heart disease in my family (that I know of)
I do exercise by riding my bike and skating
Then they asked about my other hobbies and work.. One thing that kept being brought up was...
Stress....

Of course at a hospital they do not like to diagnose things like high blood pressure and such, so they kept "hinting" about me going to a regular doctor and getting checked out.

After all of this I came to the cruel realization that even though I think youthful I am not a twenty something anymore.. I am getting older and have to watch what I do..

Damn....

Good to know that was all it was though, and not a real (mild?) heart attack.

Here's a little story that might be of some inspiration:

My dad is 64. He had cancer in his leg at the start of the 70's. If he hadn't broken it skiing, they would have never found it.

They amputated it. This saved him from going to Vietnam. I was almost never born, and for my entire life I never knew him with two legs.

He skis and mountain bikes with one leg. He obsesses over health. He redefines the word stubborn. He also has high blood pressure and a temper problem. He had a mild heart attack because of it.

In 2002, he and my mom visited me in college. Nothing out of the ordinary about the visit save that they had the dog with them as well.

I later learned why they came down. He didn't think he would ever see me again because he'd been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Well, he beat it.

Now I brag to my friends at school that I have a dad who survived cancer twice and a heart attack.

Yikes! Scariness indeed!

Glad you are okay all the same! Take care of that blood pressure...it's a major issue!

I have low blood pressure myself, and sad to say, there is no treatments out there for that, and the risks of it are the same as high blood pressure....The only thing the doctors do is just shrug and tell me that they can treat a heart attack and a stroke, but not my blood pressure....which, to me, translates to "We will wait for you to nearly die before we do anything to help you!"

And people wonder why I do not like or trust doctors!

Um.. I do a lot more that collect Transformers. This has absolutely nothing to do with collecting transformers.
Transformers are not my whole life.
I have a job (lots of stress).
A family
I troop with the 501st
etc.. etc..

Stress :BOOM: is a cause of many things and is often overlooked as a cause by many. In my job and life I've learned that sometimes I just got to sit, take a deep breath, and relax. Wether its for 5 min. or 5 hours it helps. :D

I am glad to hear you are ok. I will keep you in my prayers. My mom had that exact same thing happen to her. She also has high blood pressure. She went through all the tests. She even went to a specialist just to make sure. It was all stess induced. I am still hoping she will move here since that is a major sourse of her stress. She loves family and since gas prices are outrageous she has not seen her 3 year old granddaughter since she was 6 months old. Perhaps the stress is causing you chest pains as well. Make sure you see a specialist just to make sure. Take care and I hope you are feeling better.

Stress can do a number on your body, even if you aren't that mentally stressed out. I was told months back that the cause of my neuropathy could've been as simple as stress (at that point, after all my trouble I could've strangled something).

Good thing it wasn't a heart attack. BTW, did you ever have that carpal tunnel surgery? I don't recall anything else about it. My kid is having surgery in a couple of weeks and I'm nervous.

Stress is a bitch.

Beat that bitch! I recommend getting into some activities to relieve your stress levels. I also hope you leave your work at work, and you're not bringing that kinda crap home with ya. Seriously, you'll turn round one day and murder everyone.

Take it slow man! ;)^

I"m glad you're okay!

There's a virus that can sometimes cause episodes like what you've described, and they usually dx people with it if they can't find anything else wrong to explain s&s.

But I hear ya when it comes to looking after yourself and dont' take youth and health to be a percuser to a care free life.

Yesterday my physio told me I had athritis in my bung knee and to expect needing a replacement for it in ten years.

AND I'm only 26!!

But at least I'll get an even awesomer scar out of it!

Take care of your self!

My trooping, roller skating and bike riding are my normal stress relievers.
Oh I leave my work at work.. I never bring it home.

Yikes. The good news is...there's stuff they can give you for stress. When high blood pressure is caused by poor diet...they can't really make you put that hamburger down.

Glad you came out of it, CB. Stress is a huge factor in a lot of things, but there are others, too: genetics, ailments, past conditions, etc.

I stress out about some things, too. Being in my early 30s, I should start taking heed. I work out a lot, watch what I eat, etc. but you never know.

My grandpa had eight heart attacks. To be fair, I'm pretty sure my grandpa was the basis for Bruce Willis' character in Unbreakable.
