My Anti Virus Is Going! Help Me!

I have a grisly problem.

My free anti virus is not going to get any more updates after the 31st of May.

But my computer is shutting the window down when I want to download the new free one.

I tried others, Avast, Anti Vir, others. TThe same thing happens and the windows all shut down.

They all use pop up windows for downloading.

The only one I could find was Clamwin.

But it is manuel scanning and not enough.

Is there a fuller version for free of Clamwin?

Please can someone offer any help at all why my computer is doing this.

Is it some malicious virus that stops a certain type of software that that avg and avast use to download their proggramme?

I could download a 90 day free trial of Windows Live but it says I have to remove other anti viruses or it will freeze.

And what if it does not let be download it and I deleted my Clamwin and AVG?

The Clamwin found a trojan in a windows autolock file in the other section of the computer.
And a Adware in another file.

Could the trojan have done something to my section?

My computer is weird and getting weirder.

I try to shut down windows and it sends error reports and shuts every window open.

Where do I look to turn off whatever I have to get avg's new free version.

Someone has to know!

I'm guessing you're using AVG.

In which case there's two links when downloading AVG8. Download from the AVG server NOT the mirror. I was downloading from the mirror and it would drop out all the time, downloaded from the AVG server and it worked fine.

No. "Full version" and "Free" are concepts that are rarely ever seen together.

Thank you Burn.

So it happened to someone else.

I will use the server next time.

I used the mirror last time.

If I use servers it might work.

I have Clamvir not Clamwin.

I am going to find Clamwin anyway in case the AVG does not work again.

I got the AVG!

Knowing about using a server being the reason it worked.

Phew, that was stressfull.

heh, glad to know I wasn't the only one who had that problem.

I haven't updated AVG at home yet, gonna do it Sunday night. I already had to install a Vista patch for it so i'll do it Sunday night in case I need to take the whole computer into the shop Monday morning to sort it out.

What can I say? I have faith in Vista. :P

Does free antivirus software work as well as the ones you pay for? I used to have Norton Antivirus, but my subscription expired. Is it worth it to pay to renew my subscription, or should I just download a freeware antivirus program? What are some good free antivirus software? I keep hearing about Avast and AVG?

This thread over a year old, and the initial problem has been solved. But just to help out, here's my advice: if you wander around the internet a lot and download a lot of foreign stuff, then you should get a pay product as they're usually superior. If you're more modest, then a free scanner will do just fine. I use Avira myself, although it's not perfect (Beware of false positives when using it) it gets the job done. There's a free and a paying version of the program so it's worth a check. Download it here:

Avira

AVG was great in the beginning, but turned out to be crap for me in the end. I had the free edition, and was offered a chance to get the full edition for a year if I completed an offer or two. (They still have this promotion btw) It worked. I was given the fully licensed, paid version of AVG for a year.

Worked great at first, and then I used Firefox portable on my flash drive, and AVG went batcrap crazy.

It thought it was a virused program and started cleaning and removing files left and right.

I reinstalled Firefox, but the damage had been done. I thought nothing of it and continued to use the portable version, with seemingly no problems.

AVG asked me to download the ID protection program they're offering now because of the "virus attack" that had taken place and I figured "Why not?" I downloaded it, installed it, and things seemed to be fine. For a couple of days....

A warning pops up and says "Some components have been disabled or uninstalled, please see AVG main window for more information." Sure enough, it shut down the web protection (such as the browser toolbar, etc) and left only the anti-virus active.

Couldn't get it to work, and it wouldn't update from AVG's website. So I said screw it, and went on my way to surf. A friend sent me a file from his computer via IM and it was virused, apparently. Since I didn't have full protection at that point, AVG crashed my entire system and I had to reinstall Windows.

I switched to Avast! and I've had not one single problem, ever since. AVG was good, but now it's just junk. It's okay for the Free Edition, but skip the paid one, it's just a mess.
