My reocmmandations:

Code Geass: It's relatively new. I've thought of it as Gundam Seed if "Kill'em All" Tomino was helming it and littering it with fanservice. Some of it's chars seem based off or resemble various Seed characters and it isn't afraid to kill off certain chars to advance the plot. It's on the verge of ending and though the ending seems to be a bit messy (figuratively) overall it's a good series.

Full Metal Alchemist: It has to be recommended on any recommended list. Has a lot of everything in there.

Cowboy Bebop: If you're looking for somehting different thats more episodic and you like various kinds of music. I know people who don't like anime but like this one.

Gundam: If you're going for anything go for Zeta, 08th MS Team Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam, Char's Counterattack, and Seed. I would recommend 00 Gundam too but if you're waiting for the DVD, it's not out yet. Ignore Destiny, Wing, and G Gundam.

I recommend this site for anime fans

and since you like more kiddie shows I'd also add Digimon and Medabots to the list.

Someone posted most of the first season of Medabots on youtube. It might be cheasy, but it's actually a lot better than Pokemon or Digimon.

Outlaw Star is all kinds of awesome and you may need to have your head checked if you watch it and not like it.

Transformers RID is also a good anime. Fairly kid friendly and well written.

Since you like Sailor Moon and want something with giant robots in it, have you ever tried Magic Knight Rayearth? It's an old fave of mine, about a trio of schoolgirls whisked off to the magical land of Cephiro by a mysterious imperiled princess.

Death Note
Mobile Suit Gundam (Original 1979 series, watch this before any other Gundam series)
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (Direct sequel to the '79 series. Not the compilation movies)
ZZ Gundam (Not the best Gundam series ever, but it does finish off everything left undone by Zeta)
Char's Counterattack (Gundam movie, finishes off everything)
Gundam 00
Code Geass (The series ends in the next couple of days)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Along Complex (And it's sequel series, Second GIG)
Super Dimension Fortress Macross (The series they took Jetfire from)
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Excel Saga
Vision of Escaflowne
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Hellsing
Devil May Cry (Video game anime)
Outlaw Star
Full Metal Alchemist
Rurouni Kenshin
YuYu Hakusho
Bleach

And I can't help but feel I may have missed something on this list.

Medabots, Magic Knight Rayearth, Gundam, Robotech, and Macross look the most promising. Might give Haruhi another chance. Bleach= maybee.

Robotech and Macross are the exact same thing, except for a few name and situation changes. Robotech is the dub of Macross.

And in that kind of situation, go with Macross.

A lot of good stuff has already been covered.

You should watch Slayers though.

Slayers is a good step up from Sailor Moon, I'm sure you'd like it.
