Will the distant future be like Star Wars?

You know, spacecrafts flying all over the futuristic cities of miles-tall skyscrapers and us humans associating with aliens and talking robots. In fact, everything sci-fi have all come true.

What's more, we now have what even the most imaginative sci-fi writers of the past CAN'T EVER imagine, like DVD players, Internet, cell phones, etc. And yes, toss in cloning and plans to go to the Mars in about 7 years or so, too.

So - do you think there will actually be a far-off future where we finally join the many races of aliens in the galactic community, build robots that actually think for themselves (and even transform into vehicles), and live like the characters of Futurama or Jetsons?

If not, how come? :???:

The future's going to be really corporate. Someone is going to buy Saturn.

My official prediction:

When technology becomes accesible, affordable, and economically efficient enough, coporations will fly off and claim places in space.

Worse case scenario: Wars will be fought over territory on some rockball.

Yes, yes, and yes.

But I don't think it will happen as shown in Star Wars. Honestly, I can't see us peacefully co-existing with alien species. Why? Because they will be so drastically different that who's to say their aspects don't offend us to the point of hatred and violence. It happened all over the earth in the days of exploration.

How sure are you about that? Surely there are instances of similiar things in the old stories.

Futurama and Jetsons, no way. Those shows are comedies that are much more about modern life than the future. The jokes revolve around crazy, futuristic set pieces yes, but at the end of the day, the reason it all is funny is the point of view of modern ideas.

First off: Ships are probably going to be more like in Gundam, where you can either walk or flaot, as there's no artificial gravity.

Second: Lightsabers are possible, if one could fit a magnetic plasma into a magentic field about three feet long, two inches wide.

Third: MJOLNIR Armor on all the soldiers.

That sounds like way more work than it's worth. :-P

It sounds badass. I know it must be badass. What is it, and what is it from?

........ I hope it's just a brain fart. But the Mjolnir Armor is the suit Master Chief wears in Halo and Halo 2.

Anyway, I think the distant future will probably end up like Star Wars, of course we won't be buddy buddy with every alien race, but like in society we usually don't give a crap so long as people leave us alone. Or unless someone puts a bounty on our head and we get caught in a cantina and end up having to put a laser shot through a guy.

actually, I figured it'd be alot like 40k, lots of superstition, religious fanaticism, and we'd be trying to wipe out every alien we found.

besides, I just want terminator armor and a powerfist

I think the future is going to have machines that are sentiant, and a lot of people with cybernetic implants in thier bodies.

I think the latter is very likely, as people are probably going to be gung ho for that kind of thing and want to merge with their technology and gadgets. I just hope technology implantation will be volutary and not forced against the person's will.

Will it be like Star Wars or Star Trek not likely at least not in my lifetime.
I think the future will be more like how it was presented in Firefly/Serenity than Star Wars or Star Trek.

Oh, I agree fully, when we first start traveling through space, we'll end up relying on the land a lot more like in the days of the old west. Technology will be found more heavily in the core worlds.

However, down the road, that technology will get to those worlds, it may take a long long time. But it will end up like that in Star Wars, the "used future" technology look, the aliens, all that stuff.

If we find any aliens, anyway.

I do think it's very possible that humanity could end up populating distant balls of rock, though. Unless we kill ourselves off, get hit by a clump of ice the size of Greenland or succumb instantaneously to a huge burst of undetectable cosmic radiation...

Will we replace our current road system with hover vehicles? I can't imagine we'd be able to organise such a traffic system, and with potentially no obstacles people might just drive/fly all over the place.

Well, we already have a system. Same system air-traffic controllers use. However, for hover vehicles, I doubt we'll get rid of road systems, they'll still have a use. Like in futurama you see hover cars going along the road, as well as in the air.

Air space is finite, so they'd have to not only designate air-ways for hover-cars, but also keep air-space for airplanes or spacecraft.

We will not live that long.

We have already outpaced our ability as a race (humans) to sustain ourselves in total. That is, we (Americans & others) live in relative luxury (iPods, cell phones, laptops, automobiles instead of bicycles, A/C, makeup, etc.), at the expense of those that create it for us in terrible working conditions. Made in Communist China, anyone?

Man lives for the subjugation of his neighbor, unfortunately.

We will all eithier starve for lack of resources, and overpopulation...or we will destroy ourselves with our own nuclear weapons (as a planet).

Well, you asked.

We've been ignoring a key issue here.

If the future is like Star Wars, then evil men with british accents will rule space!

Cell phones were predicted in Star Trek, remember? Possibly even earlier, but those little flip-up wireless communicators certainly weren't even close to development back in those days. And I guess in some sense they were using wireless internet too, what with all their accessing records from other planets and such.

Anyway, i know U.S wont be "all powerfull" in those year. All Empire fall...

Don't bitch me its true...Roman Empire thoght they would rule forever, and look at them now!!!

Also, lets say human race finally find peace. Then, we meet alien. They will end up just like Native American. They will get cleaned up! its sad, but thats what happened to my "probable ancestor" (I say probable cuz its not proved yet that i have native blood, but many person in Québec apparently have some)

Also, what happen if we "meet our match", if we find a specie even more twisted then us???
