what makes a good super robot

i was thinking of creating my own anime super robot by using all the classic robot abilitys as well as adding my own.

what i need help with is that i cant figure out what people mean when they say super robot.

i have a story,but practically nothing else
this is what i need:
attacks,powers,abilitys and weapons
wether it's a robot on its own,or made up of vehicles(like voltron)
perfect robot designs to homage
what to NOT make him
name ideas
alt.modes(if any)

the story-
in the futuristic world of 1984,giant alien robots invade earth to take it's resources, but in an attempt to destroy these robots,a scientist named dr.sakurai creates robot mech suits for his sons, senji and mamoru.

I cant claim Im an expert at this sort of thing, but I figured I would throw some ideas your way :)

The Brave series is one that often pays homage to itself... often having super robots with lions faces or heads as their chests... Exikaiser and GaoGaiGar are two good examples of this.

As for moves or abilities.. Rocket punches are quite popular.. not to mention cool.. be it firing the forearm from the elbow down, or in GaoGaiGar's case, the fist spinning counter clockwise and the forearm spinning clockwise, then firing as the "Broken Magnum". Staying with the King Of Braves, its probably got the most abilities and tools out of any manga or giant robot show Ive seen.. some of them include protective force fields.. giant robotic pliers for manipulating spacial dislocations, a giant piledriver for creating spacial dislocations, an ultimate move that combines both powers of protection and destruction whilst causing harm to the user, and a hammer that reduces its target to harmless light particles..

Now tell me that doesnt at least peak your interrest? :P

Personally I love GaoGaiGar.. so sorry I may seem a little biased toward that.. but the show itself pays alot of homages to other super robot and brave shows, give it a look on Wikipedia or something :) ..not to mention its sheer awesomeness.

As for its form.. Id go with the individual vehicle idea.. anyone who doesnt love a good combination sequence.. well.. :P

Finally for a name I would say come up with a good design that you like first.. see if a name doesnt come to mind whilst your doing it. Failing that post your designs here and some of us may come up with some Ideas!

Hope thats some wood for the creative fire primeoptimus!

Super Robot as a Japanese term that get tossed about is best refered to in the Super Robot Wars series of games.

All mech in the series are designated either as Real Robot or Super Robot.

Real Robot covers mechs from series like Patlabour, Gundam, Macross and series of the like, using mechs that have designs that are mostly mechanical in nature, using conventional weaponry, and piloted (usually) by trained professionals in traditional manners.

Super Robots cover the more fantasic styles of Manzinger, Getta, of old to more recent examples of Giant Robo or Gurren Lagann. Mecha that perform amazing tasks based on coolness rather than actual science.

Of course there is some bleedover between the two.
Evangelion units, are biomecanical units with human souls, which is more of the Super range, but as they are powered thru conventional power systems and rely on blades and guns are classed as Real.
Gundams are classed as Real even with some of the more fancyful designs in Wing and Seed, as the basic mechanics are still handled thru engineering and (somewhat iffy & questionable) science. The exception is Mobile Fighter G Gundam where the mechs with their special control suits, and attacks based out of street fighter and the power of love are placed into the Super class.

the wiki entry for Real (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Robot) and Supers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Robot) is actually pretty accurate, and would be a better source for you.

you could go vheicle voltron and have like 17 pieces make a giant robot (And i'll form the right ring finger).

are you doing serious or blatant homage/parody.

I like the idea of a few really out of place things, ala the car/head on megas xlr.

just throwin tidbits out there

no,im not doing a parody,im trying to find an idea that pays homage to all the popular old school mecha, while throwing in original ideas so it wont get to bland.
and i mainly want to homage the popular classics(not gundam because im not going for that angle of mech designs)

i was thinking something like mazinger z to base it off of
(i recently saw some of it and thought i should make my own 70's-80's style mecha)

so,now that i have a few ideas, can anyone give me a list of what you think the top 5 classic mecha are
(can be anyone, but must not be a gundam)

thanks guys,im starting to get some ideas.
im still open for suggestions if anyone has any.

i came up with the 2 main characters, koji and ray(the pilots)
story goes that there nasa scientist father,dr.fugiyahmah is captured by the evil demon named blackhawk.
blackhawk plans on using the dr. to create this machine called the toushaki that can make millions of copies of his demon robot henchmen called demon-robots.

but unknown to blackhawk, the father created 2 mecha for the sons in case such an emergency would happen.
not to sure what else other than that, but i think im gonna make koji pilot a robot similar to vehicle voltron
(bieng made of 20 seperate vehicles)called senkojin,
and ray would pilot the raykahn,a robot that looks like a macross crossed with an invid shocktrooper.

im trying to come up with a unique way for them to combine.
any thoughts?

What makes a good super robot?

Weapons. LOTS of weapons.
All packed into one trim and sharp looking machine.

And they should all be big enough so that when they come out, everyone goes, "Where the $@#% did they put THAT??"

LOL!! Sorry. Feel free to disregard that if you wish.
But I do think the one of the best things about a good robot is a signature weapon. Not like a sword or a plain old laser cannon.

Something that's more original.
Like.. bow and arrows, throwing stars, whip, or a staff with energy blades on the ends.
Or even something that doesn't even exist.

thanks,i was thinking of doing something along the lines of like astroboy or something
(were a bunch of random weapons come out whenever he needed them)

Neat.
But I think you should set a specific list of weapons. He can have a lot, but I think characters that are like magical swiss army knives are kind of odd. I mean having EVERYTHING just makes it to comvienient.
