Big News for Dragonball Z fans!

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Dragonball Z, "refreshed" episodes of Dragonball Z will air in Japan from Sunday the 5th of April 2009.

These refreshed episodes will include:
- While based on the original animation production, it is being updated with new technology
- This includes extending the frames for formatting on an HD 16:9 display (note: not cropping the image)
- The original Japanese cast is re-grouping to re-voice the show (where available, and unfortunately not including those that have passed on, such as Hirotaka Suzuoki [Tenshinhan])
- Sound effects are being updated
- Unlike the general show, the OPs and EDs are being completely redone
- While not in the above announcement, other reports are noting that the number of episodes is being reduced from 291 to approximately 100
- This begins 05 April 2009 @ 9 am

Information from www.daizex.com/

Can't wait!

Oh Sweet. I think the dubs are doing this as well.

On a side note I am putting together a dub of the last special that aired last year.

So, they're going to take out all the fluff episodes or something? Maybe cut the fights down a bit too? I wonder, will they just cut whole episodes or cut episodes together similar to what Funimation did back when DBZ first came out.

Anyway, that's the most intriguing part to me. Cutting the fights down wouldn't be such a bad thing either. Did we really need to see Goku fight Freiza for 22 episodes? Heck, the last five episodes of that fight took place in the span of one minute.....

Hopefully this will mean DragonBall will finally get a DVD release in Germany.
This sounds so very interesting.

When DBZ first came out Ocean's Group did it. (They also do Gundam, the Unicron Trilogy, and a good portion dubbed anime)

Shrinking it down gives DBZ haters one less argument. I really hope Funimation gets their hands on this for the Dub, I can't see anyone else doing it like them. (Sorry, Mr. McNeil, but you are not Christopher Sabat)

The only series I saw with more time-stretching was Inuyasha; some fights took an eternity in DBZ, especially in the first half (there were 4-5 episodes in rows where cuts of Goku or Gohan only contained montages of them flying into the battle while the others are struggling in the battle)
Also, making longer episodes can cut the number, too.

I'm not sure if they will do an abridged series, but cutting the filler out (as in sticking to the manga) would reduce the number of episodes a great deal (but I very much doubt to 100).

I do wonder if Funimation would get the rights, or do yet another re-dub seeing as they are almost finished releasing their "uncut, complete" editions (they are up to the Babidi-Majin Buu Saga).

would be good to get DBZ in it's original intended size, rather than the cut down/chopped off versions we have had thus far.

Sounds like what they did with star trek awhile back.

They released and uncut/original version of voltron on dvd never seen it in stores and it was in japaneze. Maybe we will see these sets redone here after the movie makes gazillions.
