According to the state of Ohio, I don't exist

So today, my grandfather was helping me with my taxes and every time we tried entering my social security number it said that the SSN didn't belong to a real citizen. We were entering it correctly in the format they were requesting. Yet, I don't exist. The funny part is when I was filing for the Federal tax return it worked. I have lived in Ohio my entire life. I was born and raised here. We eventually had to prove my identity by faxing information and stuff, but I found this quite amusing.

Has this kind of thing happened to anyone else?

The federal govt says my SS umber isn't valid. I was going to E-file my taxes this year but they wanted some electronic number off last years return. I mailed it. So Turbotax sent me to the IRS website where they said my SS was invalid. New York State had issues with it too. I've been here all my life, 27 years with this number too. Sheesh.

I don't know, my number hasn't changed off of my SS card. I hope it's just the system and not a major problem which will end with us being deported. lol

Being deported would totally reek of sucktitude!

But it does make me feel better that I'm not the only person this sort of thing has happened too

Not to be the Alarming Person No One Likes (as opposed to just the Person No One Likes), but when one's SSN is suddenly 'invalid' it may mean that there's been some identity theft. Obviously not on your part! There's a huge industry selling SSNs to illegal immigrants/aliens/foreign long-term visitors or whatever the new PC term is. It may happen that your SSN was sold to someone so they could in turn give it to an employer so that they appear 'legal' in the payroll.

This is not cool. EVen though it's not hard-core identity theft, it's something you need to get on top of. If you're paranoid, try to check your credit rating (you're allowed to do this for free once a year from the government, not through one of those subscription services! This place is decent: banking.about.com/od/loans/a/freecreditrpt.htm or google "government credit report"). Contact the Social Security Administration office in your area and report it. Don't just sit back and go, huh, that's weird!

HK, paranoid.

I just love it if a word has two different meanings!

But if that is true what you say HK, that is actually really scary.

But VP, you could have used that to your advantage, no more taxes! :D

You have got to love the government my grandparents are still get stuff from the government and they have been dead for a long time. So you should check to make sure that the government thinks your still alive because I read a story were one person was declared dead by the government and how it all started was he went to file his taxes and his social security number wouldn't work.

I couldn't use it to my advantage though. Because my taxes came directly out of my paycheck. I get it all back this year though.

Woooo

My mom got a notice a few months back demanding a return of Social Security benefits. They claimed my father was dead, and wanted back all the SS money they'd sent to him.

Only one problem: Dad's just fine. He still works full-time, in fact.

Clearing it up was a problem. He thought going down to the Social Security office with his driver's license would clear things up--I'm me, I'm not dead. Makes sense, right?

Here's what the clerk asked him: "Can you bring in the death certificate?"

HK, still tryin' to figure *that* one out.

I know the feeling, though I wasn't born here, I've lived in Ohio for almost 13 years. As the famous Twister quote goes, "It's the Suckzone."
