BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- A polar bear attacked a woman at Berlin Zoo Friday afternoon after she climbed a fence and jumped into its habitat during feeding time, police said Saturday.

The bear attacks the woman during feeding time.

One adult polar bit her several times after she plunged into the moat, police said.

Zoo workers tossed rescue rings toward the woman to hoist her out and distract polar bears swimming nearby, said Goerg Gebhard, a Berlin police officer.

At one point the woman fell back into the water and was grabbed by a bear before she was eventually hoisted to safety.

"They saved her life," Gebhard told CNN.

The woman was severely injured and was being treated at a hospital, police said. Watch polar bear attack woman ยป

It's unclear why the woman entered the bear habitat, but police issued her a citation for trespassing.

Berlin Zoo is home to Knut, the first polar bear to be born there in over 30 years. The bear became a huge talking point in Germany when his mother gave birth to him in December 2006.

 Erm...Was this woman bloody INSANE?! Even if the polar bears weren't hungry, I still wouldn't even THINK of going in there, and my husband will tell you, I'm an animal freak. Also, if she wanted to have her name in the news, she could have found a less stupid way of doing it #-o

And the countdown to lawsuits against the zoo and/or calls for the polar bears to be euthanized for 'viciously attacking' this lady in three...two...one....

Too bad you can't sue someone for being a moron.

HK, my cynicism knows NO bounds.

Insult to injury'd! And rightly so, dumbass. I can't imagine being so screwed up in the head that jumping into a polar bear pit sounds lke a good idea.

If I was in charge of that zoo, that bear would have gotten a free meal. Man should stop interfering with Darwin.

Seriously, why choose the most violent of the bear species to screw with? Polar bears are the only known bear that will go out of their way to kill a human. Grizzly and black bears try to stay away, but a polar bear will eat you on sight.

Probably because of what hellkitty pointed out earlier. That stupid cow was probably trying to sue the zoo or whatever, saying she fell in and the bear attacked out of the blue. Or maybe she just wanted to commit suicide in a memorable manner. Either way, stupidity in this case should be fatal :-x
