WASHINGTON - A government official confirmed the first U.S. death from the new H1N1 swine flu on Wednesday, a 23-month-old child who died in Texas.

It is the first death from swine flu reported outside Mexico, the country hardest hit by the influenza outbreak. The disease is suspected of killing more than 150 people in Mexico and sickening over 2,400 there.

The official gave Reuters no other details on the case. U.S. officials have confirmed 65 cases of swine flu, most of them mild.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization was holding an emergency "scientific review" of the outbreak to determine exactly what is known about how the disease spreads, how it affects human health and how it can be treated.

Experts will take part via telephone from the United States, Mexico and other countries where people have been infected by swine flu. The U.N. health body said a report will be published shortly after the meeting.

My condolences to his parents.

30'000 people die from 'ordinary' flu per year. I think a sense of perspective should be observed.

There has been 26 confirmed deaths since early April. But people are freaking out because it's worldwide. Just don't tell the media about AIDS.

People are idiots and have a very small world view. Even if she was American, even if she was dead from swine flu, there are what, 360 million Americans?

As mentioned above, more people have died from "normal" flu then this thing.

Just like SARS and Bird Flu, this will come and go and people will not even be ranting about this next year.

The war in Iraq isn't that big a deal anymore because of Obama in charge, the Recession is winding down in its media impact, people need something else to get their panties in a bunch.

Sympathy to the toddler's family of course.

Leaving nationality out of it, because, well, it's kind of irrelevant, we now have two deaths *in* the US. The first is a 23 month old, who, by definition, has an immature immune response--they tell parents, for example, not to let kids that young eat *honey* because of the bacteria in it.

The second is a woman who just gave birth and also has a pre-existing health condition that compromised her immune system.

I'll only worry when someone who was in a state of actual normal *health* dies of it. And until it kills more people than jaywalking, I'm not going to let it affect my life.

HK, paranoia, yes. Panic, no.

What are the supposed symptoms of the swine flu? I work at an elementary school with children whose parents come and go to Mexico on a regular basis. The swine flu is something I'm a bit worried about (especially since my pregnant girlfriend works at the same school) and i was just wondering what are some of the symptoms that victims of the swine flu are experencing?

Another example of the media creating a panic and blowing things our of proportion. More people die from chicken pox or a regular flu. Its the SARS thing all over again.

Yes, I know the swine flu is overblown, but I really feel for the parents and family. Losing a baby or a toddler has got to be THE hardest thing to live through. A life cut short way too soon.
