How do i know if something is a bootleg or not? Ive been going nuts lately collecting tons of 80's and 90's shows on dvd sets. I stumbled upon a set of Visionairies and grabbed. My freind swears its a bootleg set. Im now paranoid about other sets ive seen online like Iron Man, Conan the Adventurer, M.A.S.K, Biker Mice From Mars. Help me i dont wanna get screwed.

Hmm, I'm not familiar with Visionairies, but the name pops up in the forums from time to time, and I imagine if it ever got on DVD there would probably be a topic about it. However, according to http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/ , it is not out on DVD. Iron Man isn't either, or Biker Mice, or MASK.

However, this is(I assume) a Region 1 site, and these sets could have been released in the UK or something. Wikipedia says MASK was released by Madman in Austrailia and Jetix in the UK, and Visionairies was released by Metrodome in the UK.

M.A.S.K has only been released officially in the U.K. I believe in 2 volumes. So if it says its a region 1 American issue then its a bootleg. As there is no official release yet for it in this side of the World.

I suggest you go over to http://80scartoons.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=4

The resident DVD release guru there is "MacGyver" .

He'll likely be able to help you identify them.

Thanks.

The Visionaries set is NTSC. Which according to wiki is the same as region 4 which is austrailia. why would a set come that far get traded in its original factory plastic seal and only be selling for 19.99. And this store is a reknown gouger for boxsets and dvds that are from north america.

And it works on my dvd player #-o . It was an exspensive phillips that i bought 4-5 years ago. :-?

I must correct my previous statement.

It seems there is in fact an Australian release of M.A.S.K by Madman Entertainment. Which is official.

you may have that one.

There also appears to be French and German releases as well.

And of course the U.K. Jetix release.

As for why your player play it. It may be a Multiregion DVD set as has been known to happen.

I have a a Spider-Man Animated series set that is region 4 and 1 specified on the box.

Also your DVD player may be multiregion capabale.

I also own an old black Philips player that's been able to play everything I stick in it thus far except for CD #1 of Batman the Animated Series: Volume 2. It can play discs from every region just fine, but this Batman disc refuses to play.

Oddly enough, my other player also a Philips (cheaper compact version with the push-up tray) has no problem playing the very same disc.

Really, that is spooky. Its the only disc so far that has given me any trouble on my player. And the fact that it plays fine in another player of the same brand really puzzles me.

Puzzles me 2.

Here are my suspicious dvd sets i have found:

Conan The Adventurer

http://www.amazon.com/Conan-Adventurer- ... 099&sr=1-9

==>WIkipedia In the UK Jetix Films has released the complete season one DVD set containing all 13 episodes in their original story order. It is unknown at this time if more sets will follow.

The complete series was released on DVD in Australia in 2004 by Force Entertainment in a series of sixteen single-disc DVD volumes, with four episodes per disc

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Biker Mice From Mars :

http://www.amazon.com/Biker-Mice-Comple ... 494&sr=1-1

wiki:

The complete first season was released on DVD in the UK[3]

In the show's country of origin, the US, the complete first season is now available on Amazon.com, but it has yet to be released in actual stores.

What confuses me is if stores carry a said set online or on shelves its not a bootleg obvi. But im suspicous when its only available on amazon or ebay. why wouldnt stores wanna cash in 2.

Not sure I understand.

The link you posted is to the Visionaries DVD set entry in amazon.com

I'm guessing there's been no Region one U.S. and Canada release even though this claims to be one.

The M.A.S.K entry also has a a comment that says its a bootleg due to lack of quality in the video and the dvd menus.

http://www.amazon.com/M-S-K-Collection- ... pd_sim_d_2

The Pictures there are for 2 different versions. The First Picture is the Official Volume 2 Madman release.

Here's their own Website:
http://www.madman.com.au/actions/catalo ... ethod=view

And the last 2 pics seem to be of a Bootleg version.

However there's no way to tell which version you'll get when you
order.

The Description mentions nothing about who released the set.

Madman's page does specify its a Region 4 PAL format and not NTSC.
