You have 101 favourites? That's not a favourites list, that's a laundry list of just about every sci-fi movie known to man. You can't have a favourite when you like everything just as much. Top lists should be limited to about 5 or so.

Anyway, enough with the diatribe. I'm a sci-fi junkie. But here's a list that doesn't contain every sci-fi movie known to man: Event Horizon, Ghostbusters, the old Transformers movie, and Mystery Science Theater 3000. Used to be RoboCop, but I got tired of that around the 10th viewing or so. I'd count the Terminator movies, but the last one is showing that the series might be getting a bit stale.

Just adding to the list of good movies everyone else has (in other words, yeah, those were great! but also....)

Gattaca
Tank Girl (cheezfest, but who can not like Ice-T as a mutant kangaroo?)
also cheezy as hell, but deliciously so,
Starship Troopers (Jake Busey. Need I say more?)
and Repo! (Though I hate anything with Paris Hilton and Sarah Brightman, I think they kind of cancelled each other out).

HK, my taste in movies is only surpassed by my extreme beauty. Not!

"Everybody should have a friend like me!"

That was a great movie. Also, I didn't read the original list, but I also love Robot Jox, for being cheezy as hell and somewhat TF-like.

"One week from now, you're mine! I kill you dead!"

Aside from the original list, none of you said Serenity.

How can anyone put Alien on their list? That was one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. No suspense, no drama, not even a damn jump scene.

The only decent thing about it was the special effects and that can't save a movie thats putting me to sleep!

Plus the ending was so anticlimatic.

The sequels are so much better.

My list
Starship Troopers
Godzilla
Day the Earth Stood Still(original)
Transformers/Revenge of the Fallen
Star Trek(newer)
Episodes 5, 6, 2, and 3 of Star Wars

Well, some of us older folks (creeaaak) remember a time when Alien was totally new and kick ass and sci fi movies were super rare, so we tended to cling to what few bits we had.

Besides, you want *sloooooowwww*? Have you seen _Clockwork Orange_? _2001: A Space Odyssey_? Compared to those, _Alien_ was lightspeed fast.

Besides, it appeals to an older aesthetic--half of the 'scary' of that movie was that you never really got a good look at the alien. Sort of like how Bay teases us in the first movie, where Sam can see Bumblebee for the first time transformed, and we can see Sam seeing Bbee but we can't really see Bbee that well? Remember how frustrating that was? Kinda like that.

But yeah, the second Alien movie is the high watermark of the franchise. Who can forget Hudson? "Game over, man!!"

HK. Ahhhh, Hudson. The Starscream of the Alien series.

2001: A Space Odyssey...it was good, but it could have been half it's length. Peter Jackson had that same problem with King Kong, 90 minutes of plot jam-packed into three hours. It was the movie that taught me exactly how long I want to watch a movie. (Not three hours)

And while I'm here spamming the thread and whatnot, I might as well slap down my list.

In no particular order (And this isn't the full list, but I tried and that's what matters):

Star Wars (All Six)
Serenity (And FireFly in general)
Stargate (Though I prefer the series)
Alien(s)
Predator 1 and 2
While I may get shot for this, I actually enjoyed the two AvP movies
Transformers (2007)
The Matrix (All three)
Ghostbusters 1 and 2

Yeah, the best part of 2001 was when they were actually on the Space Station and HAL 9000 went beserk. I understand why the movie was so groundbreaking, as it does have some nice speical effects(even though the fancy light doesn't really impress me), but there was way too much dead time.

For Peter Jackson's Kong, I can also somewhat appreciate the attempt at a remake, but in my opinion it went from one thrill to another way to quickly with no breathing room in between. Plus, some of the action scenes went on for too long and therefore ceased to be exciting. And I didn't find Kong to be all that likeable. Jack Black was entertaining though. All told, the '33 version is the best Kong, followed by King Kong Escapes.

Now a best list in no particular order:

The Alien/Predator Franchise: I'm lumping all three together. Let's face it, this is one franchise that has nearly everything, as every film is different in some way. AVP: R is very weak though, but it had some cool effect/action sequences, and from what I read, limited CG.

The Star Wars films: I grew up with them, and they stand the test of time. Fantastic films, and considering they don't really contain any objectionable material(Ep. III pushes it, but it does so with reason), that makes them something that everyone and every age group can enjoy.

The Godzilla Franchise: Is this Sci-Fi? Eh, who cares, men in rubber suits and minatures forever! I hope when Godzilla eventually comes back they continue to use CG sparingly. I love every film for one reason or another, including '98(even though Zilla was CG).

Terminator Franchise: I haven't seen Salvation yet, and 3 only once, but 1 and 2 are great films, with a good story and special effects that hold up pretty well.

Transformers: Do I even need to explain :P .

The first Matrix: Haven't seen it in awhile, but it is good. Neat concept, and I liked the slow build of everything. The second one, in my opinion, was bad. I haven't bothered seeing the third one yet.

The Fly(Jeff Goldbloom): I've only seen this one once(last year), but I really enjoyed it, even though there were some pretty disgusting parts.

Jurassic Park Franchise: I almost forgot about these! Dinosaurs!!! The first one came out when I was 8, so how could I not love them? Still holds up, and still fun.

Independence Day: When my brother told me years ago they were making a movie where aliens come in on July 4th and blow up the White House, I thought he was joking. I didn't fancy it too much when I first saw it(I was...11?), but when I saw it a couple years back I appreciated it more. A good invasion movie, and I'm glad we didn't really get a good look at the aliens.

Mars Attacks!!: I haven't seen this one in forever, but from what I recall, it was hiliarious  .

The Robocop's: I need to see these movies again, and get them for my film collection, but I remember liking them.

I think that's pretty much it, but there are still a lot of movies I've never seen.

Here's another one I liked: Evolution. I know it's no masterpiece (David Duchovny has one emotion, and it is called David Duchovny), but I saw it with my dad when I was eleven, and loved it.

*pokes HK* Thanks for reminding me that I'm older than you are are. :P Yeah, Clockwork Orange was slow normally and painfully slow when you watched it after smoking...nevermind. (You kinda understood it more but still...)
Alien was the ultimate back then. I don't know how anyone could think it was lacking suspense. Oh, that's right. #-o We actually had to use our imaginations and pay attention to subtle nuances during some of those films.
I agree with you though that Alien 2 was the best of the series. Hudson was a blast and the final fight with Ripley using the loader still kicks butt to this day.

Shadowman, I'm glad you mentioned Serenity (and Rodimus Prime for backing him up) I was wondering how far I would scroll before someone mentioned it. So I guess I better put in my submissions now -
In no particular order...
Aliens (1,2 and Resurrection was kind of fun)
Star Trek II - the Wrath of Kahn
Star Wars - all of em
Serenity
Transformers (1,2 and 1986 movie)
The Returner (you thought Jetfire was big, this had a 747 transformer in it)
Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy

The rest I am drawing a total blank on. Probably too many t.v. shows floating around too close to that particular file in my brain. I'm getting nothing but static.

*edit* thanks again Shadowman. I saw the Matrix series on one of your posts as I scrolled back up. Gotta throw that set in.

I forgot all about that film! I remember reading about it a long time ago here on seibertron, back before we had seen anything of the live action films. I remember I taped it on the Action! channel, and thought I'd get a big robot battle. In truth, there are no giant robots. There are a couple of transforming ships, but they just open up to...wait, why did they open up? I'm thinking some kind of Trojan horse thing.

Anyway, it's a good Sci-fi film with aliens, and a lot of fun.

I was fortunate enough to lay my hands on the DVD. Can't get too many folks to watch it with me since most of my friends don't want to put up with the subtitles and I prefer to not listen to the voice-over version. But your right, they aren't true autonomous robots but alien controlled craft but the 747 does turn into the biggest freaking transport Mech I've ever seen. It didn't do anything spectacular and was more just for cammoflauge sake. They only showed 2 of the aliens stepping down it's ramp in their bio-armor. The "future-tech" toys brought into our timeline are pretty cool too.
I'm surprised I haven't gotten more of a reaction about this movie. I would have thought more TransFans would have heard of it or about it. Heh heh, I guess the important ones know, don't we? :P

That was intended as more of a comedy than sc-fi, wasn't it? It did have a lot of freaky stuff in it, though.

I still like the first Highlander with Christopher Lambert. The TV show wasn't too bad either.

I never really thought of that as being in the Sci-Fi category. I know that the recent TV Movie was only shown on Sci-Fi channel but I always considered the original to be Fantasy/Adventure/Action. If we can get a second opinionon this then I would like to make an addition to my list. The Highlander franchise is one of my favorites and the original movie is in my all time personal favorite movies list. (For a smaller guy Lambert can project a lot of Bad-Ass-ness)

Man, I don't know that many people that actually like The Time Machine and Lost in Space. I LOVE them. Glad to know I'm not the only one
